Marketing Yourself As a DJ: Know Your Scene and Dress to Impress

I Think I'm Ready, Right?

You’ve spent years practicing your craft on your decks, in your bedroom, in front of all your friends. You’ve got the measure of how to use your skills and your tunes. You've played out at parties, the local pub and a few mid-week clubs and you think you’re ready to hit the big time! The fact is the most important tool is how you market yourself! Technology has made DJing an easier and sexier thing to do, with a lot more DJs out there trying to make it big, too. It takes more than having the tunes to make that impact, and more than skill, because with the advances in technology these days, almost everyone can push the envelope more for that out there clubbing experience. You need to be recognisable, but how?

Do You Stand Out?

It's a lot easier to be remembered if you stand out. It could be as a gimmick - Jaguar Skills anyone?! It could be a real zany dress sense, zany hairstyles or makeup. You don't want to go overboard for the sake of recognition because you do want to be acknowledged for positive reasons, and we're hoping ultimately that will be because of your actual DJ skills. You want to be recognisable because people will always know who you are. Wear clothes with a statement, something that describes you. Have an audio ident that you can trigger during mixes so people know that they are listening to you. Tell people that you are there. Stay consistent, even after you are bored to death with the same old trick, that is what becomes your signature and the reason people come to see YOU!

To Get Support, Give Support

Having the big tunes are important, after all the crowd want to have fun and will always go crazy to the tracks they know. It can become boring when you play it safe like that because all the DJs will play all the same tunes. People appreciate variety, being surpised and educated by the idea of new sounds. Just as there are many, many DJs trying to make it big, there are plenty of independent record labels and artists trying to have a small piece of the pie in the hopes of growing. The music scene isn't always as cut throat as it's reputation would have you believe. Supporting fresh acts is a big part of it. This gives you an edge, because you can get hold of exclusives that no one else will have. If these artists make it big in the scene partly due to your help, it gets you higher on the ladder, too. Every big act was once unknown and trying to get somewhere, someone had to give them a chance somewhere along the road. Playing fresh music will help you to be noticed for not just following the crowd of other DJs trying to be booked for every event going, but for supporting your music scene which shows true passion and everyone loves a DJ who loves what he or she does.

DJ Who?

Of course you need a name to make an audio ident. There are plenty of DJs who use their nicknames as their stage names and quite often people use their real names. The name can sometimes imply what kind of music you play to give the raver an idea of whether they would want to give your set a go. Make sure your name fits your sound - if you go for something descriptive like DJ destruction for e.g. I'd expect to hear some hard hitting music! The best thing to do is to make sure that your name is unique, be it by stylised spelling or by making sure no one else has that name when you do a google search. It's impossible to be totally unique and there are often other people out there with the same name, so the main focus should be about making sure in your genre of music your name is unique.

Social Media

The whole world and it's nan has a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pintrest account, not to mention a plethora of others. Posts get shared and reposted all the time. To ignore this great feature would be ridiculous. In this day and age, it would be impossible to get anywhere without having several social media accounts. Purely just having a page isn't enough, though. You need to be active in them, exchanging comments with friends and fans. This gets people to like you on or more personal level. When they feel like they are not just a follower, but a friend, you get a more positive reaction from people and this can help you grow fans. This can also backfire, so the best thing would be to have a fan page separate from your personal page. This way you always are in control of how you want to come across and less likely to alienate people. People like to go to club nights when a popular Dj is playing. Social media has the ability to make you popular. Use your social media to engage with people. Post regular updates about what you're doing, post pictures and videos, let them see you doing what you do, so they have the chance to love what you do!
