Masamune-kun's Revenge - Anime Review

Updated on October 3, 2017
3 stars for Masamune-kun's Revenge

Masamune Makabe was mercilessly teased as a child for being overweight, especially by a girl named Aki Adagaki. Masamune decides to get his sweet revenge on Aki by transforming himself into an attractive, intelligent, and athletic young man. After spending many years honing this new persona, he transfers to Aki's school in hopes of finally getting his long-awaited vengeance. With assistance by her maid, Masamune slowly builds his relationship with Aki with the intention of breaking her heart. However as their friendship grows, Masamune starts to question his devious plans and if they are truly what his heart desires.

While the story in this anime is fairly predictable there are a few plot twists with interesting characters and you'll still enjoy the ride. Masamune-kun's Revenge is exactly what the title says, this anime is all about getting revenge on a bully, in this case that bully is Aki. Aki is a rich girl who holds a position like that of a queen in her school, all the boys pine after her and it's definitely gone to her head.

Considering it's a pretty generic Romcom type anime, Masamune-kun's Revenge still manages to be entertaining, the characters are fairly well developed and the art style is pleasing to look at and the plot is just interesting enough to keep you around for the next episode.

What you can expect from this anime is much of the same as we've seen time and time again from similar anime featuring main characters in a high school setting solving high school problems with a little romance, drama, and revenge thrown in. I keep mentioning that this anime hasn't reinvented the wheel by any means but it is entertaining and offers a few unexpected plot twists that will keep you invested. That being said some of the characters behave fairly inconsistently with how they're presented.

This anime is good for a few laughs and offers a predictable but still entertaining story that some could find relate-able. Character development through the anime is slow, with Masamune doing most of his development in the past before the anime begins and Aki remains mostly unchanged from her former self, she is pretentious and makes up degrading names for for the male students at her school but she has some secrets of her own. For anything the main characters lack there's a lot of side characters who come in through the story who help to keep things interesting, all in all I'd recommend this anime because, while it's not ground breaking, it's still a good show for what it is.
