Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory Review

Updated on November 19, 2009

Warning: Conains some major spoilers.

Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory is a concept album by the progressive/metal rock band known as Dream Theater. A concept album is an album that is entirely composed of songs that share a similar theme and make up a story (famous concept albums in the past have included Pink Floyd's The Wall, David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Beethoven's Last Night). Scenes From A Memory is the followup to Dream Theater's "Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper", which appeared on their Images And Words album. I bought this album at Best Buy 3 months ago, and I can honestly say it is some of Dream Theater's greatest work. John Petrucci is a god on the guitar, and the rest of the band members are equally brilliant, each bringing a unique piece to the table. The story revolves around 5 characters: Nicholas, Victoria, Senator Edward Baynes (a.k.a. The Miracle), Julian Baynes (a.k.a. The Sleeper), and the Hypnotist. The story begins with Nicholas being put into a deep sleep during his hypnotherapy session. He had been suffering from reccurring nightmares and decided hypnotism might be the best way to search deeper into the problem. Through these sessions, he sees the world through the eyes of a young woman named Victoria during the year 1928. He discovers that Victoria had been murdered by her lover Julian, just before taking his own life. He finally puts the pieces to the puzzle together and learns that he has been having these recurring dreams because he was Victoria in his previous life. He finally decides to move on with his life, having finally broken free of his nightmare. What he is not aware of is that Julian actually didn't kill Victoria or himself. Victoria had been sleeping with Edward on the side and finally decided to return to Julian. Unable to control his jealousy or anger, Edward breaks into Julian's house and shoots him during a struggle. Turning his hatred towards Victoria, who had witnessed the horror, he uttered the words "Open your eyes Victoria!" and shot her as well. Later on, we find Nicholas at home relaxing. As he is pouring himself a drink and playing a record, he is startled by the Hypnotist, who says "Open your eyes Nicholas!", and the rest is static. It is believed that the Hypnotist is actually the reincarnation of Edward, who returns to make history repeat itself once more. This is a very thought provoking and highly intruiging album, and a must have for all Dream Theater fans.
