Michelle Duggar From "19 Kids and Counseling" Thoughts on Birth Control

Michelle Duggar From "19 Kids and Counting" Thoughts on Birth Control
Disclaimer- A few people always write me rude comments whenever I talk about the Duggars. They think I am either picking of them for no reason or they say I must be jealous. The truth is I like them and respect them. Just because I don't agree with some aspects of their life, that doesn't make them or I wrong.

The Learning Channel hit a rating gold mine when they produced "19 Kids and Counting." They are the leading show on Tuesday nights. By watching the part-reality part-documentary show, we can see how the Duggars live day-to-day.

Jim Bob And Michelle Duggar, both 48, are Fundamental Baptists. Many people assume that the Duggars are devoted Quiver-fulls, but this is simply not true (thought one could see the confusion). Quiver-full members believe that it is a sin to have sex and somehow prevent contraception. It goes against the whole "go forth and multiply" thing.

Michelle explained in her book that she and Jim Bob jointly decided that they would allow God to determine how many children she and Jim Bob would have. She discourages people to use birth control pills and IUDs. She disagrees with both of these prophylactic prevent a fertilized egg from being attached to the lining of the uterus. She considers a fertilized egg (who is even hours old) a full blown child. Between her first- and second pregnancy, she became pregnant and not knowingly continued taking birth controls pills that caused her to miscarry.

Michelle Duggar is not against other types of birth control, such as family planning and condoms if there is a valid reason for them not to get pregnant. Remember, the only people she believes can have sex and not sin are a married Christian couple which is comprised of one man and one woman. Some of the valid reasons for using contraception include health or financial problems.

Another reason Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are not a member of the Quiverfull movement is because she restricts sexual intimacy nearly half a month. Michelle and Jim Bob skip all sexual contact when she is either on her period, and for seven days following it.

Additionally, the Duggar clan follow the Old Testament's rules on sex and birth. The Duggars do not have sex for 40-days following the birth of a boy. They wait for 80-days following the birth of a baby girl. Michelle has stated in her book that even though she nurses, she usually gets pregnant on the 8th- or 9th months.

If Michelle wanted as many children as possible under the Quiverfull movement, she would have sex as soon as recommended from her doctor, which is usually 4-6 weeks if the birth were vaginal. Michelle would also forgo breastfeeding since she could pregnant eight or nine months sooner. She could have easily had 25-30 kids.

L Leviticus Chapter 12:

12 The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Say to the Israelites: 'A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3 On the eighth day, the boy is to be circumcised. 4 Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

6 "'When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.[a] 7 He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.

"'These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. 8 But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way, the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.'"

While I feel family planning is wisdom especially regarding financial situations, I do believe it is possible to have a larger family and do well. Over 20 years ago, my family was friends with the Dooley family in Missouri. They had 13 children, were devout Christians but not Quiverfull, and lived on a farm in the country. They wanted a large family, as both parents came from largr families. Their children were not neglected, were extremely intelligent (I know 3 or 4 went to college), and I admired how the children operated with one another. I do believe the husband is the head of the house, but my husband always listens to and takes my opinion into consideration before making the final decision. I think a lot if this comes down to personal belief and choice. The Bible tells us to "work out our own salvation", which tells me it is personal. I believe in homeschooling for my own reasons, but mainly because the public school system has reached the point of not including the parents in all aspects of the child's education. My children are my responsibility first, and as such, I should be the first call if there is any issue. I also homeschool my son because it is a better way for him to learn as an individual. All of this aside though, these are still personal choices.
