Miley Cyrus' Foam Finger at the VMA Awards
Okay. My daughter and her friends grew up watching Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, on the Disney channel. They all emulated her. Well, of course, that was several years ago now and Miley has grown up transitioning from a down to earth, sweet girl into an adult trying to make the transition from childhood stardom. Since leaving the Disney channel and her show, she has done a decent movie or two, had some flops, and musically, no longer dominates the pop charts. Like Lindsay Lohan, Miley is struggling with adulthood, just not nearly as bad.
Long before Miley performed at the VMA awards, my daughter got a text from a friend warning her about it. The show was originally broadcast from the East Coast, three hours ahead of the West Coast.
Her "We Can't Stop" song is actually her best in recent years but it is an adult or teen song with some obvious explicit words. Basically, its theme is old, "we can do what we want, when we want and you can't stop us". I get it. Typical teen or adult thinking, but even Taylor Swift was embarrassed by the overly sexually provocative dance routine Miley did with the song.
So, yes, the foam finger usually seen at sporting events signifying #1, was turned in to a very large penis and carefully placed many times in the routine between her legs with facial expressions. Then, there was the other performer who joined in and at various times, Miley bent over with her butt in the guy's crotch simulating sex.
I guess it could be Miley's Lady Gaga performance of shock and awe. A performance that will stand out and one that people will remember. It was radical for Miley and that is what she intended, to announce to all of the Hannah Montana fans that, "Hey, I am an adult!".
But having the performance on MTV with no censorship in prime time went too far. She went too far, too many times, using the foam finger as a penis between her legs. This can send the wrong message to many people and perverts, with the latter thinking she is a target for rape. One never knows.
It was odd to see that the Lady Gaga performance was tame compared to Miley's. Katy Perry's finale was rather boring and plain.
