Mockingjay Extras Casting Information

If you live in the area of one of the filming locations, you definitely have a shot of being an extra in the movie. The production company will need hundreds and maybe even thousands of people to be extras in the Mockingjay films.

Keep in mind that the major parts are going to go to actors who already have Hollywood experience. Even minor speaking roles will only go to people who already have agents, experience, head shots, and all the other expensive things involved with the acting business.

Here's what you need to know about extras for the movie:

  • The casting and production companies are going to be looking for local people. That way they can depend on them being able to show up for work and not be out of the area when they are needed. People who can commit to being in the area the entire time of filming might be considered as well.
  • Filming can take place during any time of the day. So you will have to be able to get out of school, work, and any other obligations you may have.
  • An adult must be with you if you are under 18. If you are cast, you will have to get a work permit for the state you are filming in.
  • Extras for these films are paid, but it isn't a huge amount of money.
  • When the casting calls come out, you will need to register with the casting company or at least communicate with them about the part. The Hunger Games had open casting calls in a local mall, but Catching Fire was mainly done just through the agency. The agency will probably just handle the casting for Mockingjay as well.
  • You are more than likely going to need 3 good pictures of yourself, but not necessarily professional quality pictures. The casting company is just wanting to get a good idea of what you look like.
  • In some instances, they may also ask for a video of you doing something in particular, like crying, to see how well you would look in a scene on camera.
  • Don't be heartbroken if you aren't chosen as an extra for this movie. They will be looking for people of a very specific physical appearance to match the script. You may not match that description. They are also likely to have thousands of people applying for parts that call for just a handful of people.

It's okay to dream big, but realize that getting into acting is tough. Big breaks are very, very rare. If you want to act, start with local stuff like community theater and acting classes. If that goes well, then look into getting an agent for small parts like commercials.

More Casting Information

  • Principal character casting will take place in Los Angeles with additional casting in both Boston and Atlanta.
  • Extra casting will take place in all three places throughout the production.
  • Casting calls for extras should be out in late summer of 2013.
  • The casting calls will more than likely not be under the name Mockingjay or Hunger Games. It will be listed under a working title. It is basically a way to disguise the movie so information doesn't leak out. The Hunger Games was filmed under the working title Artemis. Catching Fire was labeled Idiom.
  • Catrett Locke Casting was the extras casting agency used for Catching Fire. It will more than likely be the same company who will post casting calls for Mockingjay. Check their blog regularly for casting calls.
  • The blog Acting Auditions is another great place to check for casting calls. The site lists casting calls for lots of major movies. It will have Mockingjay casting calls posted when they come out.

***Spoiler Alert***

Mockingjay Story Overview

The story gets more intense in Mockingjay as the nation gears up for war between the Capitol and the rebels.

Katniss finds herself in District 13 with Finnick and Beetee after she was pulled from the arena during the games. She is desperate to find Peeta and worried about what is happening to him in the Capitol along with Annie, Johanna, and some of the other victors.

The Capitol destroyed District 12. Gale along with Katniss' family and a few other survivors from District 12 have made their way safely to the rebel camp in District 13.

District 13 is mostly underground. It was mostly destroyed by the Capitol. The District made an agreement with the Capitol to "play dead" in exchange to be left alone and not start a nuclear war.

The people live in a huge underground facility and are led by President Alma Coin, a very stern and controlling woman. Food is rationed and everyone is on a strict schedule.

Katniss makes a deal to earn a few special privileges for her family and herself, like the ability to hunt near the bunker and to be able to keep Buttercup, Prim's cat.

The rebels want Katniss to be the face of the revolution as the Mockingjay. To do this, she must tape a series of commercials. Meanwhile, the Capitol forces Peeta to do interviews asking for a cease-fire.

Peeta warns Katniss about an attack the Capitol is planning against District 13. Everyone has to go down to the lower levels of the bunkers because of the attack alarm. Prim barely makes it into the bunker in time because she was trying to make sure Buttercup was safe, too.

The rebels want Katniss to film a commercial showing that she has survived the attacks, but she breaks down crying. The rebels realize that she won't be much help to them until she knows Peeta is safe. They decide to send a team to rescue him and the other victors.

Peeta is rescued, but is in a bad mental state. The Capitol tortured him using tracker jacker poison and mind control to trick him into hating Katniss. Peeta eventually gets a handle on what is real and what wasn't, but he isn't completely well.

Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and several specially trained soldiers are sent to the Capitol along with a tv crew to film more propaganda commercials. The team gets hit hard with several booby traps along the way and looses members of the team. Boggs, President Coins' right hand man, is blown up. He tells Katniss not to trust Coin and not to go back to 13 just before he dies.

She gets the rest of the team to believe that they are on a mission to kill President Snow. The team goes farther into the Capitol instead of returning home. They retreat into the sewers where they encounter mutant creatures. More team members are lost, including Finnick.

They escape the sewers and hide out in the basement of a shop for awhile amidst the chaos of the Capitol as the rebels advance on the city. The team uses the chaos to blend into the crowd and continue their advance on Snow's mansion.

They become separated and Katniss finds her way to the mansion herself. Meanwhile, Prim and many other children are near the presidential mansion unloading supplies and helping victims injured in the battle. Bombs go off killing Prim along with other children and injuring Katniss as well.

Katniss is suffering from a severe case of post-traumatic stress. The rebels take over the city and Snow is placed on trial. He tells Katniss that Coin was actually the one who ordered the explosion that killed her sister based on bombs designed by Gale.

When Katniss is supposed to execute Snow, she instead turns her arrow on President Coin and assassinates her. The crows riots and Snow is later found dead. Katniss is placed on trial for murdering Coin, but is found not guilty because of insanity.

Commander Paylor becomes president and abolishes the Hunger Games and starts to make over the nation. Katniss and Peeta return to District 12 to rebuild. They help each other to recover and they eventually have two children together.

So excited for the final two Hunger Games movie! I enjoyed all of the books and know that they'll do just as good of a job on the last two movies as they did on the first one. Thanks for the detailed information.

When I was reading the Hunger Games trilogy, almost everyone I spoke to about it told me I would hate the ending of book three. I liked it. I don't know why they hated it so much. I'm very excited about the movies. Thanks for the hub!

FlourishAnyway - Thanks! The Her Games is such a great series. Many people want to be a part of it and being an extra is a great way to do that.

randomcreative - The trailer for Catching Fire looks amazing. I think the movies will get even better as they go. Thanks!

Eric Calderwood - I completely agree with you. I thought the ending fit the series perfectly. The story isn't a "happily ever after" type of story. It is hard-hitting and tragic, especially considering it is a young adult novel. For a story so tragic to have even a remotely positive ending felt right because it is more about surviving to the end. I think the rest of the movies are going to great also. Thank you!
