Popular Songs of Bollywood in Raag Yaman Kalyan
Popular Bollywood Songs in Raag Yaman Kalyan
Hindustani Classical Ragas have been commonly used in Bollywood, not only for composing the so called 'classical songs', but also the mainstream popular musical stuff that is the staple diet of Bollywood. Many of these popular songs, which don't seem to have anything in common with classical music, are actually based on classical raagas with a lot of variations and adventures. Such creativity, which may not be endorsed by the purists is often lapped up by the masses, resulting in many popular numbers.
As one can see here, Raag Yaman Kalyan is a favourite for romantic love songs largely due to its inherent ability to bring calmness to everything that it expresses, including strong and even disturbing emotions. These very qualities also make a great medium for expressing detachment that underlines all human philosophy.
Here is a list of ten popular songs of Bollywood based on Raag Yaman Kalyan. A tribute to the raag as much as they are a tribute to the creative skills with the raag has been adapted for consumption of masses and their contemporary tastes.
movie: SAAGAR (1985)
Sagar kinare dil ye pukare ....
This number marked the return of legendary on-screen pair of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple after more than a decade. The number that became more famous because of the kisshing scene with which it begins, a Bollywood milestone of sorts, makes great use of Raag Yaman Kalyan to depict the strong emotions of love with an expression of lasting commitment that comes from the music. Sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, its music was composed by R D Burman and lyrics written by Javed Akhtar. It is one of the favourite songs based on classical music from the eighties.
movie: PREM GEET (1981)
Hothon se choo lo tum ....
This number has great poetic words that are fully complemented by its music creating strong synergie. This all time great ghazal, composed and sung by Jagjit Singh, arguably the greatest ghazal singer heard in Bollywood, makes great use of Raag Yaman Kalyan to communicate the unexpressed emotion of love and longing. The lyrics of Indeevar add a class to it.

Sochenge tumhe pyar .....
This number is a testimony to the surviving influence of classical music even in the nineties, though not with same effect as was there in the earlier decades and perhaps in a form that became too diluted to have the desired impact. This popular number that fuses many Western and modern music practices with Raag Yaman Kalyan was composed by Nadeem Shravan and sung by Kumar Shanu. Its lyrics were written by Sameer. In a way it also represents how the integrity of classical music gave way to the dominance of fusion.

This popular number, based on Raag Yaman Kalyan, is again a fusion of philosophy and love, being expressed by a man who wishes to pull his love from despair, back to life. They have been given music composed by Ravi and sung by Mohammad Rafi making it a popular number of the times.
movie: HUM, TUM AUR WOH (1971)
Priye Praneshwari .....
This number, an uncommon and funny depiction of love, is an example of creatively blending Raag Yaman Kalyan, which was always very popular for romantic numbers, in a manner very different than the usual, but to similar effects. A lot of credit must go to the genius of Kishore Kumar, who has sung this number, composed by Kalyanji Anandji, while the lyrics were written by Varma Malik. With a lot of mixing, it is far from a purist's delight, but its creative output can cheer up any soul in the world. It is also a testimony that classical music can be the basis of something as un-classical as comedy music.
