Movie Muscle - Hollywoods Greatest Physiques

Updated on March 19, 2013

Who doesn't enjoy a good action flick? I grew up watching massive muscle bound heroes save the day, get the girl, and be a major badass at the same time. It inspired me to do weightlifting and Martial Arts - two things which changed my life. On that thought, it's not just entertainment that gets us watching these movies, but for many the motivation of seeing an excellent physique on screen, something to aspire to. A good benchmark can provide some serious motivation. Whose are the best? I have compiled a small list of who I believe are the greatest muscle icons in Hollywood, and the reigning heavy weights of all time.

Jean Claude Van-Damme

Known for many action movies like Blood-Sport, Universal Soldier, Street Fighter, and many others, Van-Damme was one of the biggest names of the 80's and 90's in Hollywood. His movies raked in money and his fined tuned, absolutely ripped physique had you beleiving those kicks were hitting hard. His martial arts background made for exciting fight scenes to be remembered, while his physiue had you beleiving the power he possessed was lethal.

Vin Diesel

After his debut in Pitch Black, Vin had a very dark and dangerous image, with well developed arms that had people declaring him to be the next big action star. His success in Fast & Furious, XXX and Chronicles of Riddick have earned him a spot at the top. Diesel, now in his 40's still stays in excellent shape reminiscent of his late 20s.

Sylvester Stallone

Sly is one of the few people out there who is keeping his physique finely tuned from his twenties well into his sixties. The massive success of the Rambo and Rocky movies cemented him as one of the all-time biggest muscle movie stars, with a totally ripped midsection and built upper body to sell the roles. After what seemed his time was slowing down he comes out of nowhere with a still massive physique in the 2000s with sequals to his smash hit movies, as well as The Expendables, an action hit with some of the biggest action movie stars ever to walk to earth, including big Arnie himself. Impressive for a guy approaching his mid sixties.

Dwayen 'The Rock' Johnson

'Do you smell what the Rock is Cookin'?'

Dwayne Johnson seems to have the most impressive physique (in my opinion) on today's movie screens . His wrestling background sells him as a supremely tough guy, and his acting walks hand-in hand with that image. Dwayne's movies get me excited, he has a way in his method of making movies that bring back memories of the great action flicks of the 80's and 90's. His supersize physique goes against today's grain of what seems to be traded in for the smaller more ripped guys out there, letting everyone know that the bug guys are still kickin' ass.

I personally think he'd make a good addition to another Expendables Movie. :)

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Big Arnie was the first, and greatest muscle bound action star who paved the way for guys like the above mentioned.  Hailed as the greatest bodybuilder of all time, his massive upper body, and slim waistline (a fresh contrast from the massive bodybuilding guts you see today) gives him a classically huge look that's hard to beat.  A man so successful to jump from the very top of one game, bodybuilding, in the the most famous actor (of the 80's and 90's) to wear the action label and kick some ass, all the while proving to be an honest and nice guy, and great role model.  His movies were hit after hit and still selling hot off the shelves today. Good ol' Arnie is simply the best out there.
