Movie Review- A Piece of Work

Updated on February 5, 2016

Although Joan Rivers has passed away at this time, her work lives on in many forms. She naturally did standup comedy but also wrote books, plays and was a designer. Joan Rivers documentary A Piece of Work shows the ups and down of one year in River's life. It shows her great drive and determination to stay relevant to today's society. Joan Rivers was the master at staying contemporary and relevant and this kept her on top all throughout her life.

Joan Rivers was a legendary comic. She was a female comedy icon who never stopped performing and creating new material. She was the author of many bestselling books. She also designed a line of jewelry for QVC. She was a very determined businesswoman in addition to being a very funny lady. In watching her movie what really comes across is how totally determined she was to continue succeeding and staying on top in a very hard business.

Many people cannot even imagine what goes on behind the scenes of a show business career. To the adoring public, the famous person has always been that way and always will be. The truth is that it takes constant reinvention of self to get there. There are many harsh disappointments behind the scenes.

The resilience of the human spirit is what makes this story interesting. Many times in her life Joan Rivers was knocked down with hard blows that would knock a regular person out of the game. Yet time after time she was able to pick herself up and redesign a way forward. This is the essence of what it takes to be a successful person. Joan Rivers paved the way for the many women who came after her.

This documentary is so interesting because it shows the behind the scenes disappointments and insecurities of a comedy legend. It is empowering to see someone who simply will not allow herself to fail and be knocked out by the hardships in life. Show business is a very difficult business to succeed in. The film shows the perks of fame, like lifestyle but it also shows the hard work and the loneliness as well.

Staying relevant to the contemporary audience is difficult. It takes hard work and a certain mindset to keep an act fresh. Joan Rivers was terrific at doing that. A Piece of Work is a very interesting documentary about what it takes to succeed in show business.
