movie review

This is a 2013 psychological thriller. It starred Matthew Goode, Nicole Kidman, and Mia Wasikowska, directed Park Chan-Wook and written by Wentworth Miller. It starts with India’s (Mia Wasikowska) father Richard (Dermot Mulroney) dies in a car accident. The wife and mother of India, Evelyn (Nicole Kidman) is devastated of this. A funeral is thrown for him and most of the relatives show up. India sees a man in sunglasses watching from afar not knowing who is. During the wake, India and Evelyn are introduced to a man named Charlie (Matthew Goode) and they find out that he is Richard’s brother. He is India’s uncle but she has never met or heard of him before. She feels that he has an agenda, but cannot figure it out. He is very charming when he meets people and has an effect on them, especially on India’s mother. Evelyn starts to fall for him, but India is still skeptical. One day after school she sees him waiting for her to give her a ride but she rides the bus instead while he rides next to the bus in his car. He is very nice but invasive in people’s personal space. India’s favorite great Aunt Gwendolyn (Jacki Weaver) comes to visit to see how the family is, but Evelyn feels she is being nosy. India suggests her aunt to stay over but she refuses and tells her to call her if she needs anything. She is staying at the Biltmore, but asks the cab driver if there are any hotels in town. She stays in motel to be close and tries to call the family in the phone booth but she sees Charlie in the dark. He tells her that she lied about staying in the Biltmore. He starts taking off his belt while she backs up in the phone booth. When his belt is off, he starts to choke her and it is assumed that she is dead. No one knows however India has her suspicions when she sees a dead body of her housekeeper in the freezer. While watching this movie, I do think Charlie has an agenda to be in the family. It does kind of creeps me out at how he watches India and wants to be a part of her life all the time. Even knowing her schedule to school and when to pick her up when no one told him to. As always, not going to ruin the whole movie by giving too much of it or giving away the ending. The movie is very interesting and has some humor but scary.
