Movies Based On Serial Killers

Updated on February 2, 2013

There are so many slasher/murder/horror films around, but I'm talking about movies based on the real deal. Real stories about real serial killers. Not a man running around with a Scream mask on, terrorising a high school, no. These movies are based on real life stories. They're about sick and twisted individuals who murder human beings as a sport. Some of these movies have been made to carefully and precisely show the viewer the real story, while others are loosely based on real stories.

Helter Skelter - This movie is based on the horrific murders committed by Charle's Manson's "family" or followers or whatever you wish to call them. The title came from The Beatles song of the same name, apparently it was written in blood at the crime scene. Charles Manson instructed his followers to commit the murders and they did so with despicable cruelty.

Psycho - The movie Psycho is loosely based on the murders by Ed Gein. Who can forget the shower scene with the music going along with it. It is a very famous movie scene. There have been a number of movies loosely based on Ed Gein including The Silence Of The Lambs.

Monster - Monster is the story of Aileen Wuornos who was a prostitute and murderer. She was executed for the murder of six men. Charlize Theron did an amazing job of portraying her, such a fantastic actress.

From Hell - This film is based on the Jack The Ripper murders. This scum was never actually caught and left a trail of gruesome murders behind him. His target was prostitutes. It's so irritating that he was never caught. As usual Johnny Depp does a fantastic job in all the movies that he is in.

The Zodiac - The case of The Zodiac Killer was a very interesting one. The killer would taunt Police with cryptic letters. The killer claimed to have killed many more than the seven that police confirmed. Maybe we will never know.

Wolf Creek - Is loosely based on the backpacker murders. John Jarratt is awesome in this movie. He does such a great job of being so creepy. I think this is one of the scariest serial killer movies, it's very raw and full on.

Gacy - John Wayne Gacy aka The Killer Clown was a disgusting pig of a man. He got this name because he used to dress up as a clown for children's parties and fundraising events etc. He raped and murdered thirty-three boys, burying most of them under his house. This movie made me feel ill.

Some other movies based on real serial killers:

  • Henry: Portait Of A Serial Killer
  • Dahmer
  • The Deliberate Strangler (Ted Bundy)
  • The Boston Strangler (Albert DeSalvo)
  • Karla (Karla Homolka & Paul Bernado)
  • Starkweather

Great hub! The movies that are based on true events are so much more chilling than cheesy horror films... Have seen a few of the films on your list but will definitely be checking out the others!
