14 Intriguing Mobster Movies Like Goodfellas That You Must Watch

Updated on October 15, 2018

Rahul is a movie addict who can never get enough of good films. His all time favorites are Inception, 12 Angry Men, and Scarface.

There is no dearth of mafia movies in the market. What sets Goodfellas apart from other movies, however, is the fact that it doesn’t try to glorify that life. It successfully shows you the ugly as well as the good side of it. None of the other gangster movies have managed to pull it off. It shows why people choose to be a mobster, knowing that chances of getting whacked by their own are higher than being caught by authorities.

If you’ve watched it, there is no doubt that you’re looking for similar movies with same rapid pace and impeccable timing. Being a huge fan, I’ve compiled a list of some movies like Goodfellas. Take a look.

Mean Streets

The plot revolves around Charlie, Tony, and Michael – small-time gangsters, who make money by making collections for the bosses. While Tony and Michael seem to be suited to this kind of job, Charlie has other ideas in mind. He tries to escape and fails, spiraling things out of control.

It’s not only a good film. I would go out on a limb here and say it out loud; Mean Street deserves to be right next with movies like Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction. It’s disheartening to see that it often doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Everything from pacing of the movie to the iconic moments where you just wanna watch it in slow motion, everything is prefect.
The best thing about it is that it trusts you as an audience to pick up the clues as you watch. It doesn’t hold your hand, trying to explain why everything happened. Some critiques say that it doesn’t have a point while others say it’s a bit too real. If you’re looking for something gritty and thought-provoking, though, you’re going to love what Mean Streets has to offer.

The Untouchables

The plot revolves around A Federal Agent who is trying everything to get to AI Capone – A pretty renowned gangster. Since most of the cops and judges are corrupt, he puts together a small team to stop the gangster.

If you ask people about their favorite gangster movie, most of them would name movies like Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, Casino or The Godfather trilogy. For some reason, not a lot of people know about this movie. If you haven’t watched it yet, it’s about time you did.

If you prefer ultra-realistic movies, The Untouchables would probably disappoint you. On the other hand, if you can appreciate some originality and creativity thrown into a gangster movie, you’d love it.

The Departed - A jaw-dropping thriller like Goodfellas

As a huge Leonardo Dicaprio fan, I can’t help but include it in this list. Perhaps I am a bit biased when I say that The Departed is one of the most intense thrillers of late 2000s.
The plot revolves around the on-going war between the mobsters and the cops. In an effort to weaken each other, both of them have deployed one of their agents in the other’s organization, leaving both parties vulnerable to each other.

When the news of rat finally emerges, both parties try to weed them out. Eventually, it all boils down to both agents as they try to find each other’s identity before it’s too late.

‘SPOILERS’

This is not your usual movie where the bad guys or the good guy gets away with everything. Most of the time in real life, both sides lose, a lot. The Departed manages to show the ugly side of being an undercover/espionage agent. The risk of getting caught is always there. Even if you succeed, the payoff is not worth it.

Just when you’d think that our protagonist has won the cat and mouse game, it would surprise you with another twist, and then with another one. The last few minutes deliver one shocker after another, leaving your jaws dropped on the floor.

If you’re looking for an amazing, realistic movie like Goodfellas, give The Departed a go.

The Sopranos - A TV show like Goodfellas

It’s a TV show. I know. The reason why I’ve included it here is because some cast members from Goodfellas appear here. Plus, the Sopranos is considered one of the best TV shows ever made, successfully portraying a mobster’s life over the course of 7 seasons.

It successfully portrays what kind of lives a mobster has to live. The have to take care of two families – the gang and their own family members. And more often than not, trying to keep both of them happy goes awry. Plus, getting whacked anywhere and anytime is always a possibility.

Overall, The Sporanos is a pretty solid show that should fill the Goodfellas-shaped hole in your heart.

The Godfather - A legendary movie like Goodfellas

The plot revolves around an ageing mobster, who deices it’s about time to pass the legacy on to his reluctant son, a war hero who’s just co0me back home. The only problem is, he doesn’t want it. When he finally takes over, things start to go awry. Two well-known, powerful families go to war with each other, descending deep down in chaos and violence.

Where do I start with this movie? It’s too perfect, too amazing to be described in words. There is a chance that most of you reading this have already watched it. And this is why I almost didn’t include it in my list.

Those of you who still haven’t had the chance to watch the trilogy, I urge you to stop whatever you are doing and watch it.

More often than not, you’d find a shortcoming or two in most of the movies. Not here, though. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything wrong with this movie. The only thing that might go against it is the length of movies. Some people might not like spending 3 hours on watching a movie. Heck, one could watch almost 3 movies in that time nowadays. I assure you, though, these 3 hours would be your time well-spent.

My Blue Heaven - A ligh-hearted movie like Goodfellas

The plot revolves around a FBI agent, who must protect a crocked mobster under the witness protection. With his usual habit of getting in too many problems, it’s not going to be easy for the agent to protect the gangster.

Don’t dismiss the movie just because it’s a light-hearted comedy. You’d have a lot of fun watching the agent and the mobster interacting with each. It’s a character-centric story with the purpose of making you laugh.

If Goodfellas was a bit too heavy and real for you, you’d love what My Blue Heaven has to offer.

Donnie Brasco

Based on a true story, the movie follows an undercover FBI agent who manages to embed himself in a mob, blending in with them without much trouble. Eventually, his gang makes it big and his boss gets made. The real dilemma begins when Donnie realizes that he is beginning to like the mobster life. Pretty soon, his marriage and his regular life falls apart.

If he walks away from the mob, his best friend in the mafia would probably be dead. He doesn’t have much time, though. Faced with the dilemma, he chooses one side over the other, spiraling things out of control.

Johnny Depp is amazing in his role, as always. I have always been a big fan of him, even before he shattered all the records in the Pirates of The Caribbean series. It might not be his best performance, but he’d still make you root for him with his heart-felt performance.

Something Wild

When an uptight businessman meets a wild lady, his boring and uneventful life take a 180 degree turn. She takes him out of town to a new adventure, leaving their old life behind for a while. But her past catches up to her when her ex-husband appears out of nowhere. When he makes it pretty clear that he wants her ex-wife back, their fun little gate-away gets ruined.

I know I’m making it sound like another one of those Hollywood romantic movies that leaves you feeling warm and fuzzy at the end. Trust me; it’s a lot more subtle than that. You’d go through a range of emotions throughout the entirety of movie. The gears always keep shifting, keeping you on your toes and guessing.

Casino - One of the best movies like Goodfellas

The plot revolves round Ace, a casino operator in Las Vegas with some connections to mob. He is trying to live a silent, low-profile life with his wife. Everything goes south when his friend shows up at his doorstep. Now a made-man of his Mafia family, he is quite used to getting what he wants. The tension and rivalry between them leads to nothing but chaos, spinning things out of control.

There is a big chance that you’ve haven’t watched this movie. It’s never mentioned along with the likes of The Godfather, Goodfellas and other fascinating mobster movies. If you haven’t, though, stop whatever you’re doing and watch it.

Everyone remembers Scorsese’s most popular movie – Goodfellas. Most people, however, haven’t even heard of his other masterpieces like Mean Streets and Casino. The art direction and dialogue delivery is some of the best you’ll ever see.

If you’re a big fan of movies like Goodfellas and would like to explore more movies by the same director, give Casino a shot.

Being a drug dealer isn’t easy. Not even when you’re the most calm and calculated person in the world; not even when you avoid confrontations and tussles all the time. For all you know. Your boss might be a total whackjob and assign you with potentially life-endangering tasks.

When a successful cocaine dealer decides that he’s had enough, he decides to hang up the boots before it’s too late. His early retirement plans gets ruined by his boss, who assigns him with two last tasks. Going on in the field for the first time can be daunting. What he doesn’t know is, it’s going to change his life forever.

Eastern Promises

A bleeding Russian teenager enters a hospital, needing immediate attention. Despite the care, only baby survives. When her diary is found and translated, it brings a harrowing truth into the light.

This is all I can tell you about it without spoiling anything. Experience it first hand; let all the raw emotions hit you like a ton of bricks. Let it churn your stomach as it leaves you breathless. In every way, Eastern Promises is one of the best movies like Goodfellas. You don’t want to miss out on it.

Honorable mentions - Other movies like Goodfellas

If you liked my above suggestions, you should also try A Bronx Tale, Dick Tracey, Pulp Fiction and Layer Cake. Let me know if I missed out on any really good movies. I’d include it here.
