6 Best Time-Travelling Movies like Looper

Updated on May 27, 2018

Rahul is a movie addict who can never get enough of good films. His all time favorites are Inception, 12 Angry Men, and Scarface.

Looper is one of the best takes on a familiar time travel genre. Directed by Rian Johnson, it's a character-driven story of a hitman with a simple enough job - shoot people as soon as they travel in time to past.

Things quickly turn drastic when he has to confront his future self lying on the floor, waiting for his chest to be ripped open. As per the terms of the contract, he'd have to kill himself in order to end the loop.

I am not delving deep into more plot details. Since you are here looking for movies like Lopper, I would presume that you have already watched this flick. So let’s not waste any more time and find some similar movies that feature some sort of time traveling.

How would you rate Looper out of 5 stars?

Groundhog Day – One of the best classic movies like Looper

There are lots of things Phil Conners, a TV weatherman hates, but what he hates the most is having to go to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the celebration of Groundhog Day every year. What could go worse for him? Apparently, things get pretty puzzling when he finds himself stuck in a time loop where every day is a groundhog day. The same day seems to be repeating over every day he wakes up. What he wanted to avoid has become his life now. Puzzled and overwhelmed initially, he soon discovers that his actions have no long term consequences as same day is going to be repeating itself over gain no matter what he does. Soon, he learns to use it to his advantage while trying to figure out a way to get out of there.

Almost everyone I know has watched this movie. And if you haven’t for some reason (I don’t know what that might be), you definitely should.

Primer - One of the most puzzling movies like Looper

The story revolves around a couple of scientists who have finally developed a device with time-travelling features. The problem is, they don’t know what to do with it. And then begins experiments with that machine that only makes matter worse and complicate things further. Their trust upon each other soon starts dwindling as things heat up.

You’ll either hate it or love it. Pay attention to every little detail, or if you can, re-watch it. You will definitely pick a few things you overlooked the first time you watched it. Take your time.

12 Monkeys

This movie leaves you pondering what really happened out there and leaves it up to you for interpretation. The plot revolves around a convict who has been sent back to past to find out what really caused the epidemic back in 1990s that had almost entire human race wiped out. I am not giving you anything more than that. It’s hard not to spoil this movie when you talk about it. And believe me, you don’t want anything spoiled. What I will tell you is that there is a lot of time travel. This movie perfectly depicts what could go wrong in time-travelling. If you love movies like Looper, 12 Monkeys should be right up in your ‘‘must-watch movies’’ list.

Source Code – One of the best movies like Looper

The plotline is not original. It’s more in line with movies like Lopper and Groundhog Day. The execution, however, is pretty top-notch, which cements Source Code as one of the best mind bending thrillers I have ever watched.

The plot revolves around a US marine who finds himself embodying someone else in a commuter train on its way to Chicago. Sitting next to him is a girl who says she is her girlfriend. The last thing he remembers, though, is his plane crashing down in Afghanistan. How come he is here all of a sudden?

It’s thrilling ride from the very first minute till the time credits roll. Usually, movies take time to set things up in first few minutes, but this movie takes the drama and intrigue to whole new level by getting straight to the jaw-dropping Action sequences in first few minutes in first few minutes. It’s almost as if there is no beginning in this movie. There is the middle and then there is the ending.

Mr. Nobody –One of the best puzzling movies like Looper

Life is all about choices. What we are today is a result of the choices we made in the past. Only if we could go back to take the other alternative and see how things would turn out. While it’s not possible in reality, at least we can get a taste of it from the eyes of Mr. Nobody, a person who lived numerous lives by going back in time and taking different branching paths resulting from his choices.

Do things turn out to be the way he wanted to? No! At the end of the day, he is an old, fragile man who can’t remember anything else other than his name. We get to hear more from him as he manages to regain his memory through a therapy.

It’s an amazing movie with a shocking revelation in the end, which is the perfect pay off for trying to solve a 2 hour long puzzle.

Inception – One of the best sci-fi movies like Looper

What if we could steal someone’s dream? What if there is a way to enter someone’s mind through dreams and steal their business ideas? Inception takes place in a time where entering someone’s dream is totally possible. A thief and his team have made a living out of stealing people’s ideas so far. Things get complicated as they are tasked with planting an idea instead of stealing one. And when he goes layers deep into the dreams, the memories of her long-dead wife starts haunting him.

Entering a dream is an easy job, but awakening from it gets harder as one goes deeper in the dream. It’s quite possible for them to be stuck in limbo forever in the virtual world if they don’t manage to wake up within the time. How far will they go?
