16 Amazing Mindfuck Movies like Predestination Everyone Should Watch
Time travels, reincarnations, and a few plot twists in the way – Predestination is one of those films where you’d be exposed to a good mixture of all these elements. It’s a confusing ride in the beginning. The ending, however, rewards you for your patience. I can’t believe how underappreciated this movie is. Part of the reason for it was wrong marketing tactics. It couldn’t have been worse.
If you still watched it, though, it’s only fitting that you’d look for some more movies like Predestination. Let’s take a look at the list I’ve compiled.
In the near future, time travel has become possible. But it’s not used for the good of the world. Mobsters use it to dispose of their victims in an epic fashion. They send back those who they want to be killed in the past where one of their own men is ready to take care of the situation. Things take a different turn when one of these assassins finds his future self on the receiving end. Apparently, his bosses have decided that it’s about time the loop is closed. They want him gone.
Overall, a well-constructed story with some amazing acting and beautiful cinematography. Don’t let the mediocre reviews keep you from it. While far from a masterpiece, it certainly deserves your attention. Looper
These Final Hours
What would you do if it came to your knowledge that the world is about to end in exactly 12 hours from now?
It’s a story about a self-obsessed, arrogant man, who knows that the world is coming to an end. On his way to attend world’s very last party, he meets a little girl and helps her search for her father. He tries his very best to avoid trouble on the way. In a world where everyone knows they’re about to die, though, trouble finds them at every step.
From the looks of it, looks like a cliché reunion/redemption story. Trust me; there is much more to story that that. There are some truly heart-wrenching scene, portraying a horrible situation where everyone just thinks about themselves. The world is believable and immersing. You’d think that this is how people would react in such dire situation. These Final Hours
Some people compare it with “The Road” – another great movie with similar style. I, however, would contend that These Final Hours does a better job of bringing the raw emotions out. There is gore, violence and some sex. Nothing seems overdone, though. All in all, one of the best movies like Predestination.
While it’s not a mindfuck, it still deserves your attention.
Time Crimes — A True Masterpiece
When a man accidentally travels back in time for an hour, he finds himself there, causing a series of chaotic events to unfold. The more he tries to make it right, the worse it gets. You see, time traveling always comes with a cost.
If you’re looking for an action flick, you’d probably be disappointed. Think of it as a slow, engaging chess game. As you progress further, the number of possible moves reduces, but there are still so may possible outcomes. In a way, Time Crimes puts you in the driver seat and compels you to think about all the possible next moves of our protagonist.
In time travel, one of the most dangerous things one could do is meet themselves. It could change everything. You avoid it at all costs. But what if you end up meeting yourself? What possible consequences would there be. tackles all these questions heads on. If you’re looking for some meaningful movies like Predestination, Time Crimes should be your best bet. Time Crimes
A troubled teenager becomes increasingly convinced that the world is coming to an end. Haunted by a rabbit money, he goes on to commit a series of crimes with dire consequences. Is the world really ending or is he delusional? Who is the bunny?
manages to be bizarre while still being thought-provoking, compelling you to think about what the meaning of life really is. Who we are and where do we come from? No matter how you look at it, it’s going to stay with you for a very long time. Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko is not for everyone. You’d either love it or hate it with passion. For most people, it’s one of the best movies ever made. You don’t find something like this made often. Others, however, fail to understand the meaning behind it. Part of the reason behind it is the fact that the movie never tries to explain things clearly.
If you watch it and still can’t figure out much, I suggest you to give it another shot. It’s totally worth it. Pay attention to every little detail, all the outlandish moments and scenes. It’d all make sense at the end.
Interstellar - A movie like Predestination
I have been a big fan of Nolan since his very first movie made it to the screens – The Following; a mind-boggling masterpiece. Since then, he has directed a string of big-budget thrillers like Insomnia, The Dark Knight Trilogy and quite a few others, never ceasing to amaze his audience with the depth and subtlety of plot. The latest in his arsenal of movies is Interstellar, a sci-fi movie depicting the near future where Earth is not inhabitable anymore. If humanity is to survive, the only way is to find another planet like Earth.
In an attempt to save the human race, a few scientists travel very far in the galaxy through a wormhole, knowing very well that there is a possibility that they won’t ever make it back to Earth. Would they succeed in their mission? Would they make it back in time?
Admittedly, the first half an hour is pretty slow. Nolan takes time establishing all the characters and building the tension. Once everything is set, though, gears change pretty fast. Only then you realize that there is a lot more at stake than what you’d initially thought.
Source Code doesn’t have a usual start. Unlike other movies, it doesn’t waste its time in introducing you to the plot and characters. No. It starts with a bang! No pun intended.
The plot revolves around a U.S. soldier, who wakes up to find himself in a train with a beautiful lady sitting right across him, claiming to be his girlfriend. He finds out pretty soon that he is on an experimental mission. The train is about to explode in 8 minutes. He must find the bomb and the bomber before that. If he fails, well, he’d have to do it all over again.
Is he alive? What’s going on? You’d get all the answers right at the end. Those who love happy endings, Source Code is a treat! It’s much more than your usual action flick. Yes, some parts might make you raise your hackles. If you can overlook them, though, it’s definitely one of the best sci-fi movies to come out in the recent past.
Upstream Color - An underrated movie like Predestination
The Upstream Color is not for everyone. It’s not going to appeal to some people. The story is told in a way that demands all your attention on the screen to link all the pieces together and make sense of it. If you’re one of those kinds who loves to analyze all the bits of a movie, you’d love what Upstream Color bring s to the table.
Much like Primer, the debut movie of Shane Carruth, Upstream Color lacks the proper explanation of the events that take place in the movie. While the latter is much more welcoming to a casual audience, it still can be very confusing and somewhat irritating.
I usually don’t like movies without a very strong plot, but this movie has to be an exception. Where it lacks in a strong narrative, it more than makes up with its hard science-fiction with no room for loopholes. If you’re an enthusiast for movies like Predestination and Primer, Upstream Color will not disappoint.
The Butterfly Effect
The plot revolves around Evan Treborn, a troubled man with not much of a life. He’s just like any other average person except for the fact that he somehow can travel back in time by reading his journal. Determined to change his future, he goes back to some turning points of his life, thus creating a different/alternate future. After a couple of attempts, it becomes pretty clear to him that there is no perfect future. There are consequences for every course of action. Is he ready to accept the reality?
More often than not, a subtle, multi-layered story like this turns out to be quite frustrating or puzzling. No0t here, though. The director has somehow managed to put the story together pretty neatly, tying all the loose ends by the end. It keeps you guessing till the end while also keeping you in the driver’s seat for the most part. If you’re looking for some good movies like Predestination but with less subtlety, The Butterfly Effect should be your best bet.
Inception - One of the best movies like Predestination
In near future, a group of people have found a way to enter into someone’s dream, steal their million-dollar ideas, and sell them to those who’d pay loads of cash. When they’re tasked with performing an inception – a near impossible task, they take the job anyway. The scariest part isn’t death. That would be too easy. One could get stuck in the dream state (limbo) forever if they don’t get the job done within the time. Will they come out of it unscathed?
There is a reason why I’ve mentioned this Nolan’s thriller in most of my lists – It’s one of the best sci-fi mindfucks you’d ever come across. Fast forward 6 years, Inception is still one of the most talked about movies online. The vague ending leaves a lot to be discussed. Different people have different theories, and it’s a joy to read all of them.
If it somehow went under your radar, you should watch it now.
Time Lapse is a story about 3 friends, who discover a camera that can take photos 24 hours later into the future. Things go pretty smooth in the beginning up until disturbing images start to come out of it.
Despite being made on a very low budget, it’s incredibly good. Give it a shot.
Honorable mentions – Other movies like Predestination
Blue Velvet, Daybreakers, Shutter Island, Mullholland Drive, A Field in England and Ex Machina are some other movies I found interesting. Give them a shot, too. Are there any other movies I missed out on? Let me know in the comments section. I’d be more than happy to include them here.
