Billy Joel - Callout

Way back in 1987 we purchased tickets to see Billy Joel at The Meadowlands in New Jersey but our car broke down on the way and we never made it there. I was able to scan in the ticket from the original show in 1987 and compared it to the paper ticket from 2009. Just look at the price and technology differences between both concert tickets (shown below).

Billy Joel in New Jersey

Years ago we attempted to see Billy Joel in concert when we purchased tickets to see him play at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. My girlfriend at that time (her name was not "Sherry" - more about that name later) stood in line four hours to get the tickets. About half way to our destination, on concert day, our car broke down on the New Jersey turnpike. We made the not so popular decision to get the car fixed versus trying to get to the concert.

The was my "Big Shot" to see Billy and I thought I would never again have an opportunity to see my favorite music artist in concert. In 2009, however, my fortune changed as we saw the Face 2 Face tour with Billy Joel and Elton John. I thought "My Life" was complete until 2015 when we once again purchased tickets to see Billy Joel in Citizen's Park (Major League Baseball stadium in Philadelphia).

Overjoyed and still thrilled about being able to attend my favorite artist in concert, I wanted to pay tribute to Billy by combining songs from the concert into this fictional story.

Billy Joel - Citizen's Bank - Philadelphia (part 1 of 2)

"This is The Time" to see concerts in a Philly baseball stadium - especially during the Summer on a clear cool August day. That was our line of thought anyway when we headed to see Billy Joel "The Entertainer" in August of 2015. As it turned out, the night was just as we hoped as we watched the entire show from "No Mans Land" high up on the third base side of the ball park.

We tried to guess what the opening song would be and hoped it was "The Downeaster Alexa" but it turned out that Joel is "An Innocent Man" and he began the concert differently. "Sherry", a fan who sat right next to us, claimed to be the biggest Joel fan this side of 305 Riverside Drive. She seemed to be a nice person so I did not bother to tell her that I am the biggest fan of Joel and I now have the tee-shirt to prove it.

I have seen many Lehigh Valley Phantoms ice hockey games in "Allentown" but those were a "Goodnight Saigon" feeling compared to this concert in Philadelphia. The show was a phenomenal experience - especially when the entire crowd sang along to "The Ballad of Billy The Kid". We sang and sang and felt the "The Magnificent Seven" as we rocked back and forth to each and every song.

Reflecting back on the concert left me in a "New York State of Mind" and had me "Moving Out" of my New Jersey home to Pennsylvania so I could be closer the Philly way of life - especially the concerts.

Read the complete song set list below and cyber jump to YouTube while I take a short break.

Billy Joel - Citizen's Bank - Philadelphia (part 2 of 2)

I hope you read the play list and are "Keeping The Faith" because I have returned to finish my story. The audience was prompted, by Joel, to select the next song and the two choices were "Say Good Bye To Hollywood" versus "Sometimes A Fantasy". The audience overwhelmingly picked the Hollywood song whereas I wanted the fantasy. "Don't Ask Me Why" I wanted to hear the fantasy song because I do not remember my thought process.

Anyway, I realized that my concert neighbor (Sherry) had a great voice when she sang "She's Always A Woman". I actually thought I was being treated to my own personal concert until her friend "Captain Jack" began singing as well. She was great, he was terrible.

Getting tickets to a Joel concert seemed like a "River of Dreams" but it was all "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" that kept me standing for the "Piano Man" that ended the regular 22 song set. We never thought for a minute that the concert was over as no one left their seat. About five minutes later Joel returned to the stage and gave us his five song encore.

Billy Joel - Citizen's Bank - Philadelphia (Encore)

"We Didn't Start The Fire" when Joel came out for the encore because it was burning long before I arrived at the stadium with my "Uptown Girl". I enjoy all types of music (Bruce Springsteen, Joss Stone and Rihanna are great examples) but hearing Joel live on the piano made me think "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me".

"You May Be Right" when you say I would rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints because "Only The Good Die Young" in this land of milk and honey. That is all I know of Brenda and Eddie and I cannot tell more because I told you already.
