My "UFO" Experience

Updated on July 19, 2009

It was a Saturday; January 26th, 2008. The time was approximately 5:55 PM and we were traveling northbound on the 57 freeway here in the OC, passing by Cal State Fullerton. We were having intermittent showers throughout southern California that weekend, so the sky was filled with some beautiful cloud formations as well. It was right around the time the media reported one of our spy satellites had lost power and projected that it would re-enter the earth's atmosphere sometime in early March.

The friend I was with is a private pilot and had put in many hours flying. As we proceeded along with the flow of traffic, I noticed something very strange in the sky. At first, it appeared to be a meteorite - I have seen many of those in this area over the years, and they can give the illusion of being very close to earth, rapidly disappearing as they burn up in our atmosphere. However, what we were watching was not moving in a relatively straight line, but was descending and then all of a sudden made a quick turn to the right at a 45° angle. By now, I was saying, "What the heck is that?" to my friend. Brake lights were blinking as other drivers were slowing down to watch. My friend was just as baffled as I was.

Then, the trail all of a sudden disappeared and suddenly out of nowhere, there were two flaming objects! Both of them were moving in a symmetric pattern, so close to one another! My mouth was wide open now and I was saying things like, OMG, what is it?" My friend was just as bewildered as I, as we watched these two ufo's descend and flare up and then ------ they were both gone!! I noticed a helicopter hovering in the vicinity of where these objects had been!

I have always wanted to see a UFO. Undoubtedly, many people had seen what we had just wittnessed! I grabbed my cell phone and called the OC Sherriff's Department and CHP (California Highway Patrol) to report my sighting but neither agency had anything to say. I called a major Los Angeles news radio station to see if they had heard about anything and I am sure the guy I talked to thought I was a wacko!

The rest of the evening I felt very unsettled, and suspected that the media was keeping information from the public, as they so often do. I watched the newspaper for the next week, but nothing appeared regarding this incident. Finally, in desperation, I turned to Craigslist and posted a notice describing what I had seen and asking if there was anyone else out there who knew anything about it.

The responses began to come in. Several people had actually seen the same thing but did not have any answers. Finally, I received a response from someone in Lake Elsinore who had the answer. I was completely amazed Here is the reponse I received from Jan Harzan from MUFON.

Dear Witness,

Thank you for your help in reporting this sighting to the MUTUAL UFO NETWORK (MUFON). We have completed our investigation and the source of this object was a Navy Seals parachute show over Cal State Fullerton Stadium. The Navy Seals were part of a pre-game show for the Heritage Bowl Football game that was being held there that evening. Here is an e-mail from LT Anthony Allard of the Navy Office of Community Outreach confirming the event.

Thank you again for contacting MUFON!

RE: Aviation Support

On Jan 26, 2008 the Navy Parachute Team, The Leap Frogs, were performing

a parachute demonstration at the stadium at Cal State Fullerton. The

jumpers have pyrotechnic devices attached to make themselves visible to

the crowd. It would probably look like a giant sparkler to the crowd

below. I hope this answers your question.

Disappointed ??? Relieved ???? Satisfied with an answer??? YES, I was all of those things ..... BUT ...... I still search the night skies with the hope that I will someday experience a true sighting!

This is what I saw (only in a dark & cloudy sky)

Yes Walkster, I agree - and especially when law enforcement "knew nothing" about it. Thanks for reading and commenting!

It is kind of odd though that none of the media around your area talked about it. Seems like it would have made print somewhere being part of a pregame show! The military hasn't satified me on the Rosewell sightings, i thank that book is still wide open. Enjoyed the Hub!

We have seen UFO's twice now. When they show the UFO's on the tv shows many of them match up with what we saw. We never reported them and never heard that anyone else had seen them but it was dark and they were silent and slow moving.
