Near the Cross by Fanny Crosby

Updated on March 24, 2012

Jesus, keep me near the cross! Lyrics, Sheet Music & Great Performances

Blessed Assurance was written by Fanny Crosby, the most prolific song writer, and published in 1869. The music was composed by William H. Doane. This traditional hymn is one that is loved by many, and I am certainly one. I love singing this song in church, and I love listening to amazing musicians perform it.

Jesus, keep me near the cross,

There a precious fountain-

Free to all, a healing stream-

Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.

Near the Cross

Words By: Fanny Crosby

Jesus, keep me near the cross,

There a precious fountain-

Free to all, a healing stream-

Flows from Calv'ry's mountain.

Refrain:

In the cross, in the cross,

Be my glory ever;

Till my raptured soul shall find

Rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,

Love and Mercy found me;

There the bright and morning star

Sheds its beams around me.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God,

Bring its scenes before me;

Help me walk from day to day,

With its shadows o'er me.

Near the cross I'll watch and wait

Hoping, trusting ever,

Till I reach the golden strand,

Just beyond the river.

About Fanny Crosby

Frances Jane Crosby (March 24, 1820 - February 12, 1915) usually known as Fanny Crosby, was an American lyricist best known for her Protestant Christian hymns. A lifelong Methodist, she was one of the most prolific hymnists in history, writing over 8,000 despite being blind from shortly after birth.[1] Also known for her preaching and speaking, during her lifetime Fanny Crosby was one of the best known women in the United States.

To this day, the vast majority of American hymnals contain her work. Some of her best known songs include "Blessed Assurance", "Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home", "Praise Him, Praise Him", and "To God be the Glory". Since some publishers were hesitant to have so many hymns by one person in their hymnals, Crosby used nearly 100 different pseudonyms during her career.

Revelation 22:1-2

And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

      So often we ask Jesus to keep us near Him and then walk away ourselves.

      This is a precious song to my heart. I remember singing it as a child at the Kabetogama United Methodist Church. Before the church was built, we had services at the farmstead my Dad grew up in and we sang to an old missionery pump organ. Sweet memories, thank you.
