The Best Thriller Films on Netflix

Everyone's favourite instant online movie streaming service, Netflix, has one minor problem, which is the amount of movies which they have available, as this is both a gift and a curse because of the amount of time it takes finding a film worth watching.

This is why I decided to collect the top 10 thriller films to watch this month, which will be updated monthly with a couple of new additions replacing a couple of the old.

So, stop wasting time watching the bad movies and get straight to the best which are available at the touch of a button.

Note: If you are not currently a Netflix user, then subscribe at the following link:

UK - This is the link for UK subscribers, simply click on the link, which will take you to the Netflix home page, with a button, which should state, "Start your free month", which will lead to a page asking to fill out personal details. First month is FREE, thereafter the set price each month is £5.99 per month. Now, enjoy streaming instant films/TV series.

US - A similar process to the above. First month is FREE, thereafter the set price each month is $7.99 per month.

Without further ado, here is the list of the best Netflix instant thrillers available at the moment, to stream instantly:

John Cusack in "Identity"

#10 - Identity (2003)

Short Review: This is a mystery | thriller, which straight away gets into the action, with tragedy and murder following throughout the course of the movie.

However all is not as it seems, which brings out even more unravelling mystery, which begins to become even more strange but with an amazing ending, this is certainly a movie worth watching.

Stars: John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet, John C. McGinley

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 7/10

IMDb Rating: 7.3/10

Elle Fanning in "Super 8"

#9 - Super 8 (2011)

Short Review: This is a mystery | sci-fi | thriller, set during the summer of 1979, when a group of young friends witness a train crash, and see first hand extra-terrestrial life, which leads to some unexplained events in their small town.

This is perfect for anyone who liked Cloverfield, but want to watch a more child friendly version, which still holds a great story together in an entertaining fashion. The film is fairly fast paced, with some well executed scenes which seem quite terrifying depending on how hardcore the viewers are with their scary movies.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, it should come as little surprise to see that the movies mystery is done very well with some unanswered questions which leads the viewer straight on through the rest of the movie. Definitely a must watch on Netflix for anyone with little interest in sci-fi to none at all as this is generally a good movie.

Stars: Elle Fanning, AJ Michalka, Kyle Chandler

Age: 12 and above

Personal Rating: 7/10

IMDb Rating: 7.1/10

John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in "Pulp Fiction"

#8 - Pulp Fiction (1994)

Short Review: This is a crime | drama | thriller, with a series of intertwining lives which involve violence and redemption, from some crazy, sycotic characters.

What more could we expect from a Quentin Tarantino film, as psychotic violence is his prime goal in his films, which suits perfectly with his style of directing.

This is arguably Quentin's best directorial project he has ever done, with all of the elements we have come to expect from one of his movies, and so well executed.

This is the perfect film for anyone with a taste for mystery, violence, and the occasional brilliant quote.

Stars: John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman

Age: 18 and above

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

IMDb Rating: 9/10

Quentin Tarantino in "Reservoir Dogs"

#7- Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Short Review: This is a crime | thriller, which starts off slow but soon picks up in mystery and violence when a simple robbery at a jewel store goes wrong, and the members of the robbery group begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.

With Quentin Tarantino both directing and starring in this feature film, this is one to watch for anyone with any interest in violent films with mystery all the way throughout, directed by the talented Tarantino. Although mainly set in one location with the scenes, the film was very entertaining, keeping the viewer enticed in the story, from start to finish.

Stars: Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen

Age: 18 and above

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

IMDb Rating: 8.4/10

William H. Macy in "Fargo"

#6 - Fargo (1996)

Short Review: This is a crime | drama | thriller, which immediately starts the drama when a straightforward kidnapping turns into full blown violence.

This was a surprisingly funny, but still serious thriller, with some great performances from all of the cast, and possibly making this one of The Coen Brothers best directorial projects.

Interested in a good, well structured thriller, with crime, drama, minor comedy, then this is the film to watch.

Stars: William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi

Age: 18 and over

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

IMDb Rating: 8.2/10

Nicole Kidman in "The Others"

#5 - The Others (2001)

Short Review: This is a thriller | horror | mystery, which takes place in an old darkened house with a woman, and her two photosensitive children, which is chilling from the very beginning.

This is one of the scarier films in my opinion, which makes this one to watch for anyone looking for a thriller with a chilling side to the story. Although the mystery is always present throughout as it begins to unravel in a more chilling way than any other film I have ever seen.

A must watch for the pure satisfaction of knowing, if nothing else, how the story ends.

Stars: Nicole Kidman, Christopher Eccleston, Fionnula Flanagan

Age: 12 and above

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

IMDb Rating: 7.6/10

Al Pacino and Russell Crowe in "The Insider"

#4- The Insider (1999)

Short Review: This is one of the best put together movies ever made. That is an honest opinion which I am sure others would agree with, as the movie intensifies from start to finish. The well portrayed characters in this movie, only add to the already gripping storyline which follows through near perfectly.

If you have 2 hrs. 30 mins spare, this is the movie to watch, and to make it even better it is available to watch on Netflix Instant right now! What are you waiting for?

Stars: Russell Crowe, Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer

Age: 15 and over

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

IMDb Rating: 7.9/10

Al Pacino and Robin Williams in "Insomnia"

#3- Insomnia (2002)

Short Review: This is a crime | mystery | thriller, which takes place in Alaska, where two homicide detectives have gone to investigate the murder of a local teen.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, on his first big budget movie, he certainly hasn't disappointed with a well structured movie, which increases in mystery as the movie moves forward. With the perfect ending, which only adds to the movies potential for a great viewing a second time around, which is sometimes hard with thriller, mysteries as the second viewing is never the same. However the second time I saw Insomnia, I enjoyed watching it nearly as much as the first time.

Stars: Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Hilary Swank

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 8.5/10

IMDb Rating: 7.2/10

Leonardo DiCaprio in "Shutter Island"

#2- Shutter Island (2010)

Short Review: This is a mystery | thriller starring the amazingly talented Leonardo DiCaprio, who has done a brilliant job in portraying Teddy Daniels. The movie is set in 1954, with a couple of detectives who have gone to an island, which has situated there a hospital for the criminally insane, where they must investigate the disappearance of a murderess who has escape from the hospital.

The film is brilliant, with every aspect pulled off perfectly, with a tormenting mystery, which adds to creating one heck of a thriller. Not to mention the superb acting from all of the cast in this very entertaining movie, which as suspected focuses primarily on Leonardo's character, which I am sure won't disappoint.

Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Emily Mortimer

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 8.7/10

IMDb Rating: 8.1/10

Bruce Willis in "The Sixth Sense"
Bruce Willis in "The Sixth Sense" | Source

#1 - The Sixth Sense (1999)

Short Review: This is a drama | mystery | thriller, which has to be the best thriller ever made, with an unbelievable performance from Haley Joel Osment, who plays Cole Sear, a boy who can see dead people (ghosts).

This is M. Night Shyamalan's directorial début movie, and what a job he has done in creating a thriller which people still love nearly as much now, 15 years after its theatrical release, than they did when it was first released.

The movie thriller captures fear, mystery and heartache awfully well, which makes this the number 1, Netflix Instant must watch!

Stars: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, Toni Collette

Age: 15 and above

Personal Rating: 8.8/10

IMDb Rating: 8.2/10

      Hi Sam:

It was interesting to read your comment as I have recently watched Jo Nesbo's Headhunters and I thought it was amazing. So to clarify, Headhunters is available on Netflix Instant in the UK. However, after checking, "Tell No One" is not available on Netflix Instant in the UK at this time, but if it's added, I shall watch it. Thank-you for the comment.

      Hi Jeremiah:

Thanks for leaving a comment. This list is based on the UK's Netflix instant library, which may explain why you are unable to find a lot of the films listed. I'm guessing you live in the US, and if so, the library you receive from Netflix instant will be entirely different. Hope this helps, but thank-you for showing your concern.

Hey Sami, thanks for the comment, and sorry for the late reply. I will be doing more Netflix Instant must-watch hubs in the near future. I will make sure to include one for the top TV series as well.

I couldn't agree with you more! The Others was a great movie, which is a surprisingly scary one to watch.

It always seems I have to search high and low to find what movies or tv shows are coming or being updated on Netflix, so thank you very much for keeping us all up to date. If you are someone who is usually well-informed on all kinds of Netflix updates, I would love more hubs. Specifically updates on TV show seasons.

I must say I absolutely love The Others. It may not be all about blood and slashing or heart pounding fear, but it has such a great twist (I'm a sucker for psychological thrillers).
