Each month, throughout the month, Netflix adds new content to it's steaming library. Here are some of the new releases coming to the service in April.

Gattaca staring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman is available for steaming on Netflix in April.

Gattaca is a science fiction drama in which one's destiny in life is determined by genetic engineering instead of experience and education. The decision on what kind of genetic makeup you will have is determined by your family before your birth with the wealthy giving the best genetic make ups to their descendants. This is not a world in which the son of a janitor can become a doctor or where a talented prodigy can become an acclaimed musician. Doctors, musicians and pilots are made and determined prior to their birth.

Gattaca is an interesting commentary on how societies work and how roles are determined based or not based on abilities and determination of the individuals born into certain cultures.

Gattaca received positive reviews from both critics and audiences on the Rotten Tomatoes site.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is probably the best movie that is going to be released on Netflix in April.

The film is a true story about a man who has an ideal life only to lose it suddenly when he becomes paralyzed. Where many would become bitter and despondent, he becomes stronger and triumphant. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is truly an inspirational story and a very powerful film.

The film scored extremely well with both critics and audiences and is available on Netflix April 1st.

The Clone Wars

Some of the best entertainment on Netflix are the wide variety of entire seasons of shows available.

One of the lesser known series is, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This animated series has 126 episodes available to stream on Netflix.

Some critics have stated that the Clone Wars series is one of the most realistic animated series of produced. Other critics state the Clone Wars have some of the best story lines existing in the Star Wars universe.

The animated medium give Clone Wars the ability to produce a vibrant and endlessly creative universe in which to conduct it's space odyssey.

If you are a fan of Star Wars and science fiction then Clone Wars is definitely a show you are going to want to check out. Don't be fooled by the animation, this is no kiddie fare.

Netflix Originals

What is really setting Netflix apart from other streaming services is the phenomenal success of some its self produced shows.

House of Cards will go down in history as the first award winning streaming show changing forever the face of television. With House of Cards Netflix proved their a big player in the entertainment business who can go toe to toe with the likes of HBO and Showtime when it comes to producing content viewers are willing to pay for.

With it's self produced shows Netflix has also invented the phenomenon of binge viewing by releasing all of a season's episodes at once to so that viewers can choose when to watch.

Along with House of Cards, Netflix has another hit on it's hands with Orange is the New Black, which will be releasing it's second season this June.

A second season of the lesser known, Derek will also be released shortly on the streaming service.

Each month we take a poll to determine which is the most popular Netflix produced show with viewers.

The results of last months poll:

  • Orange is the New Black 46%
  • House of Cards 34%
  • Hemlock Grove 11%
  • Arrested Development (Final Season) 8%
  • Derek 2%
  • Lillyhammer 2%

Although, House of Cards has garnered more critical acclaim, Orange is the New Black is the most popular shows with viewers.

The second season of House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, is currently available on Netflix streaming.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Sadly we recently lost one of the best actors of his generation when Philip Seymour passed away in February. Hoffman died of a drug overdose when toxicology reports ruled he has a lethal dose of several drugs in his system including heroine and cocaine.

Hoffman had enjoyed a long period of sobriety prior to his overdose. Having struggled with addiction from at least his college days Philip Seymour Hoffman proved himself to be one of the most talented actors working in film and on stage. It's unclear what made Hoffman relapse and as is often the case with addiction there isn't always a rational answer other than that he was an addict.

Although Hoffman is gone his work remains, much of which is currently available on the Netflix streaming service. Current films available starring Hoffman are, Punch Drunk Love, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Hard Eight, Salinger, A Late Quartet and Mary and Max.

Amazon Prime

An excellent addition to a Netflix subscription is Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime currently second to Netlix in the streaming market currently costs $79 per year, that works out to $6.58 per month so its slightly cheaper than Netflix.

A subscription to Amazon Prime gives you unlimited access to all of it's Prime eligible movies and shows. In addition you can rent new movie and shows and even movies that are currently in still in the theaters.

Like Netflix, Amazon has also started producing it's own content. It's current offerings are the political comedy, Alpha House, and Betas, a comedy about tech guys trying to make it in San Francisco.

An interesting twist Amazon has been trying is they have been producing several pilot episodes they make available for viewing to their subscribers. They then use feedback to determine which pilots they are going to produce full seasons of.

Amazon Prime offers a free one month trial, so if for nothing else, its worth signing up for to watch both seasons of Alpha House and Betas, as well as their numerous pilot episodes, some quite good.

Even though, Alpha House and Betas do not quite meet the quality of Netflix's, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black they still beat much of what is offered on regular television.

Sign up for a free one month trial to Amazon Prime.
