The Lego Batman Movie

Synopsis - The Lego Batman Movie

Rich and adored by the people of Gotham, Batman (Will Arnett) seems to have if all but most people do not see Batmans struggle. On one hand, he is lonely (though he is too cool to admit it). On the other hand, he struggles with the fear of being part of a family again and the potential loss that can come with having a family (though he is too cool to admit any of that either. When The Joker (Zach Galifianakis) intentionally gets sent to the Phantom Zone, he returns with all of the villains that were imprisoned there. The large group of villains, led by The Joker, are now taking over Gotham. Batman cannot stop them alone so is forced to work with his friend's and the orphan Dick Grayson a.k.a. Robin (Michael Cera), who he inadvertently adopted, to help him save the city as well as the planet.

Recommendation - The Lego Batman Movie

If you liked 2014's The Lego Movie, then you will enjoy this film. Similarly, if you enjoy Batman films/stories and can appreciate comedy that pokes fun at elements of those stories, then you will also like this movie. The plot and the characters are well developed, the comedy works (for the most part) and the film effectively speaks to multiple demographics at the same time. For adult comic book fans, this movie effectively pokes fun at the caped crusader while delivering a fresh story for fans of The Bat. This movie also effectively works as a kids film with plenty of sillyness and plenty of action. My major complaint about this film is the oversaturated comedy. The ridiculous humor in this movie hits fast and it hits strong. For the most part, the comedy works but it becomes oversaturated the the point where it can stop being funny.

I feel like this movie was made specifically for adult superhero fans who have children. It is a perfect movie for such adults to watch and enjoy with their children. For such adults, I DEFINITELY recommend adding this movie to your home video collection. For kids OR adult superhero fans, I recommend renting this one. For those who do not fit into either demographic, this movie should be avoided.

John Wick: Chapter 2

Synopsis - John Wick: Chapter 2

After the events of 2014's John Wick, retired master-assassin and combat specialist John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is ready to live a quiet and ordinary life. One day John Wick is reminded and pressured into repaying favors from his past. Winston (Ian McShane), leader of the secret assassin society known as The Continental, orders John Wick to travel to Rome and eliminate the head of an Italian crime syndicate. John is reluctant but he does not want to break the assassin's code so he accepts the assignment so he can get one step closer to clearing his name and leaving his past behind him.

Recommendation - John Wick: Chapter 2

The best thing about this movie, by far, is the action. Just like the previous movie, the action in this one is insane and it is so much fun to watch. This movie has its flaws, such as a weak/generic plot, but this movie delivers the crazy action film that I wanted to see. The main character seems to have conveniently lost his "badass" reputation which felt like lazy writing. The writers could not think of a good way to have John Wick re-enter the assassin world so they conveniently "forgot" about the fear that John Wick instilled in the characters of this world in the first movie. That being said, the plot and John Wick's lost reputation end up being minor issues as the movie delivers the movie it promised. This is a great (sometimes ridiculous) action film.

If you loved the action and The Continental from the first movie, then you will love this movie as well. It ramps up the action (even more from the first movie) and it gives decent focus to The Continental. If you saw and liked the last movie then I absolutely recommend renting this one but I do not see people watching this movie over and over.

I have not been able to see either of these films, but I am definitely excited too. I have heard nothing but good about both films. Thanks for sharing.
