Recommendation - Sing

Sing was a decent kid's movie. With great (but forgettable) original songs as well as covers of songs that both kids and parents will appreciate. It has a decent plot but way too many full storylines which makes the movie long to the point at which some adults were falling asleep and some kids lost interest and grew a bit restless. I really enjoyed the competition element of this movie, it got the audience engaged and guessing as to which animal would win. I thought all the voice actors did a great job in this movie and, where most of them were celebrity actors, the group I went with had a fun game of guessing who voiced certain characters.

I think most kids and adults will find themselves a bit bored and feeling like this movie goes on forever. It is easily 30 minutes too long. I think overall this is an average kids movie that ends up being decent at best. So I would recommend renting this movie if you have kids, otherwise, you can stay away from this one.

When Callum faces the death penalty, he is discovered by a company called Abstergo which has developed a new innovative method to relive our ancestor's memories using a machine called The Animus. Callum soon learns that he is the only living descendant of Aguilar, a member of the Assassin's Creed who is the last known person to have come in contact with an ancient artifact known as the Apple of Eden which holds the power to end violence. Callum Lynch must relive his ancestor's memories to find this extremely powerful artifact.

Recommendation - Assassin's Creed

This movie had massive potential. I've played all of the games and have been captivated by the storytelling and world building. This movie failed to provide the Assassin's involvement in the Spanish Inquisition, it failed to properly depict the Templar vs. Assassin rivalry, it failed to develop what could have been a very cool new Assassin in Aguilar, and that's just me getting started. Is this a terrible movie? No, do not listen to those reviews blindly. There is some great action in this film and it has set up the cinematic version of Assassin's Creed featuring a new assassin named Aguilar. This movie isn't bad but it is far from perfect. It misses the mark on most of its potential and for that, the studio should be very disappointed in this movie. The Assassin's Creed property has the potential for billions of dollars in the movie industry but this movie will not get that ball rolling. I really hope the studio finds the money to make a sequel to this movie in which it can fix its mistakes.

I hate saying this but I think this is a movie to watch only if you are a fan of the games and the story in those games. This movie definitely gives a new story but they present a lot of things that will go over the heads of anyone who does not play the games. My recommendation is that if you have not played the games, you should avoid this movie. If you are a fan of the games, then rent it but manage your expectations a bit. Fans will think this movie is good, not great.

Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck) grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and, in 1917, he enlisted in the military. What he witnessed at war scarred him and he vowed that if he survived and made it back home, he would never follow the rules again. Once he returns to Boston, he becomes an outlaw/criminal/gangster and as a result, gains some powerful allies and enemies. He then takes his skills to Florida, where he leads a branch of the Italian mob during the prohibition. He finds himself head-to-head Ku Klux Klan and some powerful enemies when his history catches up with him.

Recommendation - Live by Night

Overall, Live by Night was a good movie. It was filled with compelling storytelling as well as incredible visuals and great action. It's major issue was how much plot was crammed into the movie, which resulted in some other issues such as the action teases and the annoying transition sequences. I honestly think, this movie would have been much better served as a two-part film or even a limited TV series. I think this will be a movie that a lot of people would like, so go ahead and rent this movie but you will probably want to pause it once or twice and give yourself some mini-intermission. While I recommend renting this movie, I cannot recommend adding it to your home video collection.

Synopsis - Miss Sloane

Elizabeth Sloane (Jessica Chastain) is one of D.C.'s most reputable and most cunning political lobbyists. She has had a very successful career until she is faced with the issue of gun control. Miss Sloane decides to take on her toughest challenge yet and oppose the anti-gun control party. Sloane soon realizes that taking on such a formidable challenge will come at a price.

Recommendation - Miss Sloane

I had a couple of minor issues with Miss Sloane, but that is only a result of me trying to find things I did not like. Ultimately I found Jake Lacey's character to be unnecessary and I would have liked to have seen more from Miss Sloane's past. However, I thought this movie was great. Jessica Chastain probably gives one of her best performance yet and she has had some great performances over the past few years. She plays a very complex character with some very compelling character traits. I also really appreciate a movie that tries to tackle tough issues such as gun control. This movie shows just how complicated and broken our political system is regardless of where you fall on the issue of gun control. I really enjoyed this movie so I encourage you to check it out.

I will warn you, however, some will be uninterested in the premise and some others will hate the stance the characters in this movie take on gun control. My advice is to watch the trailer and see if it is your kind of movie. Also, if you have a passionate view against gun control, then get ready to watch a movie about characters that disagree with you. I do recommend seeing this movie but I do not think it is a movie that you will watch more than once so I cannot recommend adding it to your home video collection.
