Synopsis - Moana

Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) is the daughter of the village chief on a Hawaiian island. All her life, she has known that she will be chief one day. Her people never leave the island, they never explore what lies beyond the horizon. Yet, Moana is drawn to the ocean despite every warning from her father that the ocean is a very dangerous place. Nonetheless, Moana is drawn to it. She is an explorer and adventurer that feels held back in her role as one-day-chief: Thus all changes when the villagers realize that the resources on the island are dying because The Heart of the Sea (an ancient artifact) has been away from its home for too long. Moana's father still fears the ocean so takes no action. This causes Moana to rebel and journey beyond the horizon to find a Demi-God named Maui (Dwayne Johnson) who she plans to force into returning the heart of the sea that its original location and bring life back to Hawaii.

Recommendation - Moana

Moana is another strong release from Disney's animation studio. There's so much to enjoy about this movie. Sure this is, in a sense, another "princess" movie, but Moana is a strong and independent character that can handle things on her own. There's also no character that questions her being able to do so due to her being a girl. There is also never any mention of her needing to marry when she becomes chief . This is the kind of movie that kids need to be watching for that reason alone. There is also a fun adventure, plenty of laughs, catchy songs and an important message. I also thought that the relationship between Moana and Maui reminded me a lot of Aladdin and The Genie, though this performance was nothing compared to the great Robin Williams (no offense Dwayne).

This is a must see for anyone with kids in their lives. Adults will be able to enjoy this movie with their kids and those kids will absolutely love Moana. For those people, I strongly recommend adding this one to your home video collection.

Recommendation - Jackie

This was a decent movie, but not great. I thought Natalie Portman gave a good performance her but it was not anything that blew me away. I thought the movie as a whole was a little too dramatized for my taste. I think what will hurt this movie the most is that I have to imagine, most people will be very bored watching this movie. What hurt this movie most, for me personally, was that I never felt as invested in the story as I wanted to be. This is a very powerful moment in American history, and this movie did not properly drive that point into the audience. This is a movie that had a ton of potential but did not quite live up to that hype.

I do not think this movie is bad, but I think you should only rent this movie if you are VERY interested in the story, and be sure to manage your expectations. Casual audiences will find themselves bored and due to this, I cannot recommend adding this movie to your home video collection.
