Recommendation - xXx: Return of Xander Cage

I did not see the previous movies in this franchise but I have this one a shot despite thinking it looked really bad in the trailers. This is a poorly acted, poorly writtwn story with over-the-top stunts that defy reality. To elaborate, I got the impression that the actors in this film knew it was bad so did not bring their best performances. There was also no character development for the audience to sink its teeth into and the plot rarely makes sense so the audien cannot rely on that to pull them through the movie. All that is left is the stunts. I am all for movies defying physics with their stunts but if a movie does so they have to base it somewhat in reality or make it believable to non-physicist. This movie does not make this attempt at all. I felt like the director saw certain vehicles and sports gear, then said "what if we put it in the air?".

This movie is ridiculous and over-the-top in the worst way so if the last movies were just like that, and you loved them for it, then go ahead and rent this one. Otherwise, I recommend staying away from this one.

Synopsis - Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Set directly after the events of the previous film, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the sole survivor from a battle against the undead that may have been humanities last hope of defeating the undead. Now a loner, Alice is still killing the undead but she has little hope that they will ever truly be defeated. She carries on like this until she learns of something that threatens humanity's extinction sooner than everyone thinks. So Alice joins Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) and a small group of survivors to return to The Hive in Raccoon City to take on the undead and the Umbrella Corporation. It is likely a suicide mission, but Alice and this group are the only chance that humanity has left. So they will save the human race from the undead or die trying.

Recommendation - Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

I may have made as much possible sense of a ridiculous plot, but this movie was not written well. If the plot was not bad enough, a lot of the action sequences were a mess. This film utilisee the "shaky cam" to an annoying and almost nauseating degree. I do not want to go as far as to say that the percormances in this movie were "bad" but I think they seemed ridiculous because of the bad writing and lazily shot action sequences. There are a few cool moments in this movie, but they are severely drowned by the bad elements of the film.

Much like xXx: Return of Xander Cage, I think this movie is a pretty big disappointment. So unless you were HUGE fans of the previous movies in this franchise, I think Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a movie you should stay away from.

Recommendation - The Space Between Us

The biggest draw to this movie is it's interesting plot. I think, for the most part, this movie delivers the movie it promises. It gives the audience an appreciation for earthly things they might take for granted. The movie asks questions such as "what would happen if a human was born on Mars?" and "what would happen if that person visits Earth for the first time?". I think the film explores these questions well while delivering a character story about an isolated and, in a sense, abandoned boy who is searching for his father. Asa Butterfield gives a solid performance which is important when s movie focuses on a young character. Asa Butterfield carried this movie well.

I enjoyed this movie but, while I can recommend renting it, I cannot recommend adding it to your home video collection. It is a decent movie with an interesting by plot but it will not blow anyone away and I do not think anyone will watch it more than once.

Recommendation - Fifty Shades Darker

I know this release happened last week (May 9th) but this was the only major release last week. I also realize that I am not the main demographic for this movie so take this review with a grain of salt. I saw the previous movie, Fifty Shades of Grey, and I did not like it. I was reluctant but I gave this movie a shot and it suffers from the same issues as the previous film. I found it boring, the plot was ridiculous and the acting felt awkward for most of the movie. I have seen these actors in other movies and have not had the same issue with them but, for whatever reason, most of the scenes in this movie feel awkward as opposed to feeling sexually tense. I find the "arrangement" thing to be way too ridiculous and I struggle to get into the story for that reason. I also think the plot, as a whole, is a mess. I will admit, I have not read the books and I have no intention of doing so but I believe these movies are examples of poor book adaptations. They try to condense a books worth of build up into a two hour period but it just ends up falling flat as a result.

I do not recommend renting this movie or adding it to your home video collection unless you are a huge fan of the books and the last movie.
