Synopsis - Logan

The year is 2029 and Logan (Hugh Jackman) is aging and his powers are not what they once were. Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is sick and the rest of the mutants are gone. Logan and another mutant, named Caliban (Stephen Merchant), have isolated themselves in Mexico to care for Charles while keeping others safe from him. Logan has given up on life and it seems that Charles being alive is the only thing keeping Logan from killing himself. Logan's life goes on this way until, one day, a mysterious woman tracks him down asking for help. The woman is protecting a little girl who supposedly needs The Wolverine. Logan is reluctant to help until he starts to see how similar the girl is to Logan and how desperately she needs his help. So Logan, Charles and the girl begin their journey to get the girl to safety while running from some dangerous people.

Recommendation - Logan

I had high hopes going into this movie and I was so happy when I saw for myself that it absolutely lived up to my expectations. I will be honest with you, I am a big fan of all of the comic book movies and, while I enjoy Marvel movies more consistently than the rest, Wolverine is and always has been my favorite superhero (by far). I say this so that you are aware that I may be a biased viewer on this one. That being said, I thought this movie gave me everything I’ve wanted to see in a Wolverine movie. The action was unbelievably violent and so much fun to watch. Whether it was Logan, Laura or both of them together, the movie was filled with great action sequences that were so much fun to watch. Then to add onto that, the movie focuses on Logan as he has to deal with some very real issues such as time, old-age and death (Who’s death? See the movie!).

This is a movie I definitely recommend watching and think it is worth adding to your home video collection.

Get Out

Synopsis - Get Out

Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose (Allison Williams) have been dating for 5 months and it is time for Chris to meet Rose's family, so the two plan on spending the weekend at Rose's parents house. Chris is initially nervous that there will be racial tension, awkwardness and racism but Rose does her best to reassure him and convince him into going. Once at the house, Chris notices small racist tendencies from the family and as the weekend goes on, strange things start to unfold. The African-American workers at the house act extremely strange, Rose's mother (Catherine Keener) is a psychiatrist that practices hypnotism, Rose's father (Bradley Whitford) is a passive racist and Rose's brother (Caleb Landry Jones) is a loose cannon. All of these things lead to Chris having a bad case of racist paranoia, so he must determine: what is wrong with the African-American workers, how racist the family really is, how much danger he is in, and how he can Get Out.

Recommendation - Get Out

Get Out was a very interesting movie to watch unfold. The awkward racism, and paranoia that went along with it, provided a fresh style of a movie in the horror/thriller genre. I think the concept of hypnosis was a good addition but I think that the execution was weak. The movie is at it's absolute best whenever the awkward racism is explored or whenever the African-American workers are on screen and get dialogue. This is especially true for the character of Georgina and the actress who played her (Betty Gabriel). I thought Get Out had a great build up but I thought the climax of the movie did not fit with the rest of the movie and it did not capitalize on the magnificent rising action from the first two acts of the film.

I had high expectations for this movie and, while I enjoyed the film, I did not think it lived up to those expectations. I unfortunately thought that most of the movie's epic moments were in the trailer. That being said, the movie does have a lot of great moments and thrills. I absolutely think that this is a movie worth watching and can recommend adding it to your home video collection. Just, watch the trailer first to make sure it is your kind of movie.

Recommendation - The Great Wall

I was not expecting much from this movie and this movie was still disappointing. I was hoping the movie would give a good reason for having such a dominant white cast but there was no need for there to be any white character in this movie. China is supposedly filled with soldiers trained to fight these monsters so why do we care about a couple of Europeans who found themselves in a terrible situation? Anyway, getting away from that, the plot itself was severely ridiculous and predictable at the same time. Those are really the two biggest issues with this movie. One positive thing I can say is that the action in this movie, was fun to watch (and there was a lot of it). I would not go as far as to say that this movie is garbage, but it is definitely not worth your money.

So I cannot recommend adding this movie to your home video collection and cannot recommend watching it unless you are SEVERLY bored and this movie is on Netflix or on a premium channel that you subscribe to. In other words, do not watch this movie if you have to spend any money on it.
