Not Easily Broken movie review

The film, Not Easily Broken stars Morris Chestnut and Taraji P. Henson as a couple who married young in 1995. Taraji P. Henson plays the character Clarice and Morris Chestnut plays the character Dave.

Fast forward to present time and Clarice is on the fast track to becoming a real estate mogul. She is lauded as salesperson of the year by her division.

Dave's career dreams of being a professional baseball player are deferred after a serious injury but he remains committed to the game by coaching little leaguers and providing encouragement for them to achieve their own dreams. It is very important for him to do so.

Clarice however ridicules Dave's endeavors and tells him that he is wasting his time. She constantly reminds him that she has become the sole bread winner and questions why is he always hanging out with his boys. These include his adult friends who are fellow coaches on the little league team. They are often found either coaching the baseball or playing at the basketball court.

Clarice's resentment and ridicule of her husband reaches a boiling point when she yells her disappointment at him in the car when he is driving. They are on the way to Clarice's salesperson of the year awards event and Clarice is angry because Dave was late coming home from coaching to pick her up and take her to the event.

Clarice's loud attitude makes for serious distraction while Dave is trying to drive and he reacts, yelling back at her.

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW

During their serious argument while Dave is driving, they are blindsided by another vehicle and they get into a major accident. The airbags deploy and the scene fades out to another scene, at the hospital where we learn that Dave just has a few cuts and bruises but his wife, Clarice is seriously hurt. While she is hurt, Dave is very happy and thankful that she survives and proudly tells the doctor that she is a fighter.

The doctor pulls him aside and while the doctor doesn't know Clarice, he implies that her fighting spirit might also make her very stubborn. The doctor reminds Dave that it will be his responsibility to help convince Clarice of how important the need for physical therapy will be.

Clarice will have to have months of physical therapy. During the hospital scene, we are also introduced to the nature of the personality that is Clarice's mother played by actress Jennifer Lewis. Clarice's mother blames Dave for the accident and is very condescending towards him. We know that she is a mother-in-law that spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E.

The film, Not Easily Broken continues as Dave narrates to the audience that Clarice spent months in the hospital. When he brings her home finally, his mother-in-law moves into the house, to his dismay. Clarice however is very happy about this and feels that her mother will take care of things and that her husband can not.

Dave does hire the in home physical therapist who is Julie played by Maeve Quinlan. Clarice is very resistant to the idea at first and cries a lot, wanting to be left alone. When she finally agrees to the physical therapy sessions, she begins to owe a debt of gratitude to the physical therapist who gets her walking again.

Meanwhile, the physical therapist has car trouble one day. Clarice and her mother insist that Dave help her and give her a ride home. Well, that idea becomes bad news when Dave soon develops romantic feelings for the physical therapist....

Oh, the drama! What will happen next? Rent this film today to find out.

This film is based on a novel by T.D. Jakes. The movie commentary is also very touching.

I Rate it: 3.5/5 stars
