The Nutcracker 3D: Christmas Movie

Updated on August 6, 2013

The Nutcracker Movie Is a Christmas Classic

The Movie The Nutcracker in 3D brought the Christmas classic to audiences. Set in 1920's Vienna, the story centers around nine year old Mary (Elle Fanning), who lives in a beautiful home but longs for love and attention. Her parents (Richard E. Grant, Yuilya Vysotskaya) love her but are busy, and her brother Max (Aaron Drozin) is a handful. Mary dreams about fun, excitement, and friends.

On Christmas Eve, Mary is given a beautiful, wooden nutcracker doll by her beloved Uncle Albert (Nathan Lane). In the middle of the night, Mary's dreams turn into an amazing journey, as her new doll comes alive. Her doll is the host of the adventure, where everything is larger than life, and toys transform into real beings.

The journey isn't all fun and games, as there are evil creatures in the midst. A rat army, led by the over-the-top Rat King (John Turturro) and his devious mother (Frances de la Tour), reveals their plot to overthrow humanity.

This movie is based on Tchaikovsky's classic ballet, Nutcracker . Combined with eight songs from the famed composer, the movie also features original lyrics, by multi Oscar winner Sir Tim Rice. New dance numbers will be showcased along with a faithful adaptation of the original 1892 'Dance of the Snowflakes', by legendary Russian choreographer Marius Petipa.

Released in the 2010 holiday season, the movie, The Nutcracker in 3D offers a modern mix of the timeless story, The Nutcracker, with Hollywood's spectacular bang: action, stunts, and special effects.

The Nutcracker DVD - The Nutcracker Prince and Other Favorite Movies

The Nutcracker has been adapted into movies, including several, animated Nutcracker movies. One of the most famous is Disney's Fantasia. The 60th Anniversary Special Edition of Fantasia is now available.

Another popular animated movie is Barbie in The Nutcracker. My nieces loved this version. Popular Barbie seems like a perfect character choice for this special Christmas tale. I think adaptations of The Nutcracker told with kids' favorite characters is a great way to introduce the story to them.

The Nutcracker Prince and Tom and Jerry Nutcracker movie are very popular with kids. What do you think? Any favorites on this list?

The Nutcracker Movies and Specials - Tchaikovsky Nutcracker Is One of the Most Famous Versions

Here are some of the popular movie adaptations of The Nutcracker, including The Nutcracker on Ice. The first version had the famous ice skater Dorothy Hamill. Another presentation featured another world famous skater, Oksana Baiul.

The elegance of ice skating is a perfect fit to the beautiful music and dances of The Nutcracker ballet.

The Nutcracker Music

Boost your Christmas spirit by listening to the classic music of The Nutcracker ballet. Choose music from the entire ballet, or choose your favorites, like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, March, and more.

I love playing music every day, and during the holiday season, I get inspired by listening to beautiful music. These songs will bring the songs of Christmas feelings into your home.

The Nutcracker - Books, Music, & Crafts

The story of The Nutcracker is a family favorite, especially around Christmas. Before the movie arrives, share the story's adventure with your kids.

Enjoy sharing these fun, educational, and interactive books on The Nutcracker for kids. I love the book that lets children put on their own rendition of The Nutcracker, complete with theater and paper doll fold-outs.

I remember friends going to the local ballet of The Nutcracker every Christmas season. I saw a lovely version with my son's elementary school class on a field trip. I haven't been able to visit the ballet every year, but I sure would like to. What about you? Do you watch it on TV or a local venue?

Is The Nutcracker part of your family's holiday tradition?

@TreasuresBrenda: I'm in a similar situation. My son is 17 now and not too interested in the story anymore. One of my favorite Nutcracker ballets was the Chocolate Nutcracker, which we were lucky to see at a local theater many years ago.

We were always interested in the Nutcracker but as the mom to two young adult men, I'm afraid the tradition has slipped away from us. This movie looks interesting though. I had never heard of it before.

I will have to come to watch the trailer when I'm on my other computer, I block scripts on the PC. This is a nice lens, would love to see it in 3D. Adding this to Nutcracker Ballet Coloring Books, and I will be back...I love the Nutcracker.
