Mastering The Office Prank

Updated on January 24, 2014

Lighten Up! Office Fun for Everyone

You spend eight hours a day with these people! Eight hours a day! Eight hours with people you don't even get to pick. Eight hours with the guy who has something to say about EVERYTHING. Eight hours with the sci-fi dork who lives in his parent's basement. Eight hours with mother earth who eats tofu for lunch and keeps breast milk in the office fridge. Eight hours with people who would eat your lunch if it didn't have your name on it!

Sure, you all get along - most of the time.

But, you must laugh to retain your sanity. Without laughing with (and at) your co-workers, the cubicle's half walls might just close in on you - lodging you between a file cabinet and your PC.

Office pranks are perfect. When you laugh with someone, you become friends - even if you have nothing in common. Office pranks can bring an office together. Oh jeez, forget the sappy stuff. Office pranks are just funny as hell !

Some Simple Pranks

Easy Pranks Ideas for Your Office

  • At the end of the day, everyday, empty someone's stapler leaving only 2 or 3 staples. They will have to refill it everyday, and go crazy.
  • Advertise a colleague's job as available. Leave their number with extension for contact. Be sure it is well paying and with low qualifications.
  • Each day move a co-workers desk an inch.
  • Drop a lemon slice or maraschino cherry into someone's water bottle.
  • spray glitter
  • Move everything off someone's desk and into the office fridge.
  • Play "Eye of the Tiger" every time your boss walks in.
  • Replace photos of friends and family with that of say Scott Baio, Eugene Levy, Drew Carey, William Shatner, or The New Kids on the Block. Also set their screen saver to a slideshow of these photos.
  • Drop a rubber duckie into the watercooler when you are changing the bottle.
  • Remove the ink from every one of their pens.
  • Open a container of lice powder, and leave it in the bathroom. Say nothing to anyone. Panic will slowly rise.
  • Put a brown paper bag in the office fridge labeled "squirrel"
  • Before an important meeting, replace everything on a co-workers desk with the Hello-Kitty version (pens with feather tops, pink pads, ...)
  • Tape a really long memo or calendar to the inside door of the elevator.
  • Install the clapper on something (anything)

Jello!

These guys went all out turning an average cubicle into a house complete with a roof, siding, and even a window box.

The Office has increased office pranks at never before seen levels. It has truly brought office humor back.

Putting all the items on Dwight's desk into the vending machine was classic. But, popularizing the Jello prank is the greatest office prank success for The Office.

Inappropriate Pranks

Some pranks and practical jokes are not acceptable for the workplace

You don't want to be 'that guy' - that guy who did something terrible because he thought it was funny (and no one else did).

So, what not to do:

Don't prank people you don't like. If you are not their friend or at least on good terms then do not prank them. That's more in the harassment realm. Pranks should not be done in a mean way.

Don't do sexual jokes at work. You have no idea how this will be received, and sexual harassment is not funny. Even if you think that person would be okay with that particular joke, you don't know for sure, and the person in the cubicle next door may not be. Keep it clean. It is possible to be funny and clean. But, if you have to do something a little sexual, do not target it at one person.

Safety first. Don't do anything that can actually hurt anyone. A trip to the emergency room will spoil any prank. Greasing the doorknob may be funny, greasing the floor is not.

Don't cause damage. Embed their keys in jello, not their flash drive. If you ruin or break something, the laugh is lost.

Everything else is fair game.

Computer Pranks

Simple Prank Ideas to Pull On Their PC

By leaving your computer unattended and unlocked, you are pretty much asking to be pranked.

Right-click on the desktop and click properties. You can then make one or more of these changes:

  • change the desktop image to something funny
  • change the size, font, and color of the windows
  • switch primary and secondary buttons on the mouse (make mouse left-handed)
  • Flip the screen upside-down by hitting CTRL-ALT-Down Arrow. To get it back, CTRL-ALT-Up Arrow
  • set a new screen saver
More computer pranks:
  • QUICK COMPUTER
  • PRANK:
  • Switch the
  • keyboard keys
  • M and N.
  • Switch some letters on the keyboard around (simply swapping M and N gets a great result)
  • hit print screen and save the image in say Paint. Then set this as the desktop, and hide start menu. They will see the start menu, but it won't work.

    Detailed Instructions

  • In MS Word, change some of the AutoCorrect settings (Format, Auto Format, AutoCorrect). These auto corrections are meant to automatically correct a commonly typed mistake, or enable you to type shorthand. You can set it to change any word or their name to something different. For example every time they type "To Whom It May Concern" you can have it automatically change it to "To you or you have no right reading this" or to change "the" to "fogizzlest". Also fun to change words their misspelled versions...that to dat, was to wuz, there and they're to their, or to and too to two. (That sentence made me giggle.)
  • Visit a few websites that you know they use (which require logins). Type in a different (funny) login and when it asks if you want to save it click yes. So next time they go to google for example and try to login it will have the user name "ILoveEugeneLevy" or something like that as the default.
  • Save random nonsense as a favorite in the browser. Examples: Barry Gibb Fan Club, Clay Aiken Fan Club, Hello Kitty Fan Club, ...
  • Change people's icons (right click on the icon, click properties, shortcut, and change icon). You can get free and funny icons online at sites like IconArchive.com.

Pick Up A Few Things - A Few Tools of the Trade

George Bush Magnetic Dress Up Set
George Bush Magnetic Dress Up Set

Not so much a prank, but it does make the office fridge more fun - also add a set of poetry magnets for more fun.

Magnetic Poetry - Office Kit - Words for Refrigerator - Write Poems and Letters on the Fridge - Made in the USA
Magnetic Poetry - Office Kit - Words for Refrigerator - Write Poems and Letters on the Fridge - Made in the USA

Leave messages on the office fridge, or on metal door or desk. Write poetry, stories, or use as captions for photos. Not a prank, but still not actually working.

Few More Ideas - These Pranks Bring Laughs...Slowly But Surely

  • Print out a much of random photos and make files for them. Then file in the correct place in the victim's cabinet. For example, file a photo of a Sock Puppet under 'Sock Puppet". A few more photo ideas...Queen Elizabeth, Monkeys (put in a bunch of monkey photos), World's Largest Chair, Noses (a bunch of noses cut from magazine).... Especially good if they use interns or temps, as they will think the victim is psycho. It's a slow and subtle prank, but sometimes they are the best.
  • In someone's messy office, put a set of sea monkeys on a bookshelf. Care for them until the person discovers it.
  • Switch the nameplates from everyone's desks and doors.
  • Visit Catalogs.com and sign them up for the most random catalogs you find, to their office address of course. The fun will start rolling in just a few weeks. May I recommend catalogs for Ballet Costumes, Wedding Gowns, Medieval Replicas, The Alzheimer's Store, Dog Fashions, ... The key is to order several catalogs opposite their personality. And, if there is a stupid nickname that they have earned themselves, use that.

Let Not the Parking Lot Be Safe

Go ahead...prank their car.

So, perhaps your victim is a hermit and never leaves their office. Or, maybe they don't even have an office. Then frankly they have left themselves vulnerable to the car pranking. This is a great prank to pull off right under their nose.

But, please, do no damage...insurance companies don't like that. Don't put duct tape or glue on a car.

Really good idea for a lens, I did not know that it was an "art form"! I pranked a colleague once by having my boss agree to me doing his annual review, he was really upset even before we got to pull the prank so I called it off but the way he was stressing about it made up for it!!

When I started work, 50 years ago, in a London shop, the manager sent me out on my first day to buy a bag of earthing sand "to insulate the cellar" in thunderstorms. I trudged around London to hardware shops looking in vain for this stuff, until someone said, 'your boss is winding you up!' I returned to a shop full of grinning assistants.

Back in my day working in IT in the 1980s, computers were still in their infancy, but we all had early IBM PCs with those smallish 14in color monitors with plastic filters that stuck on the front to cut glare. My prank was I got in the office early one day and made some black paper (done by running a few sheets out the photocopier with the lid open) and slid it behind the filter screens on everyone's PCs. When people got into the office and switched their PCs on, they complained they weren't working. Had the tech people scratching their heads for ages before they figured it out!

The best pranks are the anonymous ones. My wife had a coworker who sent everyone in the office a birthday card- the same card- every year, on their birthdays. Not a word was written in any of the cards. Not a mean prank, for sure, but no one ever figured out the mystery. The company closed its doors, and on the last day, a card arrived in the mail, addressed to the company. It said- Happy Birthday Infinity.

My favorite prank came when a coworker gbought a new radio to listen to while at work. Another coworker crawled behind his desk and unplugged the radio. The owner would bang on the top of his new possession and the guy under the desk would plug it in again. As soon as the owner sat down, the prankster would unplug the power again. this went on for twenty minutes or more.

This was in a large room, and soon all of us were in on the prank, as the radio owner became increasingly frustrated with his new, "defective" radio.

I'm not much of a prankster, guess that leaves me in the vicarious position. Once my sister told a co-worker that the CEO wanted her to share at a board meeting on April 1st to tell about her position from an on line employee point of view. The co-worker said she couldn't do it, so my sister said to just give the CEO a call, which she knew the co-worker would not do. A couple weeks passed of the co-worker saying she couldn't do it and being encouraged that she had the expertise and would do beautifully. Finally, the morning of the day arrived and the co-worker read the "April Fool" note from my sister and was quite relieved. There was no planning in this prank, just a prankster's moment in time.

hahaha! not sure if i just missed this one but a good prank for people who can't touch type is simply to replace the keys (letters) on the keyboard. Believe it or not this one actually worked and the "prankee" had to call IT support to ask why, when he pressed "T", was "I" coming up? Classic.

Carefully take the label off of an empty two liter plastic bottle without damaging it. Cut an encision large enough to put an ID Card through. Slide the ID Card through the encision you have made. Seal off the encision with clear tape. Place the label back on the bottle making sure to conceal the encision. Fill the bottle with water and freeze it. Leave the bottle on the colleague's desk. The colleague will have to cut off the bottle and unthaw the water to get their ID back.

What a riot! I've 'witnessed' a variety of pranks in my office in the past -- and hubby did ... and had done to him .... pranks at his place of work! Tried to add one to the plexo above, but it kept wanting me to 'sign in' when I already was! :-)

Anyway, most of our pranks were very funny and detailed -- hubby was always a 'jokester' and I worked with some very creative funny guys -- but some that you listed here were most clever and new to me. What fun! Loved the video of the 'house' built around a co-worker's cubicle. Well done!

I had a bespectacled colleague who used to take off his glasses to go to the toilet to wash his face comes every afternoon. I guess it was to get rid of the feeling of sleepiness. Once, this funny boss of mine just came along and started leaving fingerprints all over his glasses and then quietly walked off.

Needless to say, my colleague came back, put on his glasses and started cursing. He kept looking around to see who would dare do such a thing but everyone pretended to be hard at work while trying not to burst out laughing.

The classic~ one kid kept asking me all day what I was going to do to him. I refused to answer each time he asked. By the end of the day, he was a nervous wreck.

Someone in the office had a woman call in for them. She proceeded to say that she was from HR and that she had a complaint from someone who heard he farting down the aisle and this was against company policy. This person got very irritated and asked me if they should call back to HR and ask to go home because they couldn't help their gas problem. I didn't want to get involved and told them to talk to the manager on duty. The manager told them to go ahead and go to HR. I said HR was being kind of anal with a laugh. This co-worker went to HR only to find out that no one called from HR. He was stunned. All of us were crying we were laughing so hard. Then he saw the humor in it all.

Try this... if someone (you have to be friends with them) is on the phone (hopefully a business call), go up behind them and give them and poke their ribs. They'll suddenly squirm as they're probably ticklish, probably start laughing cause it's caught them off guard, and will be forced to carry on conversation even though they want to break out in laughter.

Simple, fast, and effective. Simply hit Ctrl Alt and the down arrow key on someones computer to flip the whole screen upside down. To fix it, they should hit Ctrl Alt and the up arrow key. Good one to watch someone try to do everything upside down to fix it.

I had one that backfired on me. As a teenager I was working in the shipping department at a disk manufacturer. I put ink in a co-workers tape dispensing machine just before lunch. During lunch the CEO of the company was packing something personal and used the tape dispenser that I had put the ink in. Luckily no one ratted me out at the time and no one saw a thing of course.

A young man applied for a job in another department and was duly offered the job. He had no idea it was a hellish department with a long hours culture and an awful boss till we enlightened him and he turned it down. A week or two later we put together a letter supposedly from HR sending him on secondment to the department on a lower salary than he had been offered for the job previously. He was in quite a state. We signed it from HT Swallow, Personnel Department.

Those are some great pranks, my personal favourite which is easy to do and only takes a minute is to put scotch tape over the optical sensor in an optical mouse, the mouse will still work but not very well. Will drive them insane! ;)

I used to work in an office where pranks were routine. One that I remember, we had a guy who bought a horse and was learning to ride. He was kind of full of himself, so a few of us decided to have some fun with him. We went to the office of a city department that was responsible for running winter fairs which were annual events that included equestrian demonstrations. We "borrowed" some letterhead and sent this guy a letter asking him if he would do a demonstration at the Winter Fair. He fell for it and we had some good fun before he figured it out.

One of our guys rearranged an old keyboard, and replaced someone's keyboard with it. Another computer one I have seen for those working in open plan offices with facing workstations is to swap your mouse plug with theirs. Clear your desktop so they cannot click anything that might break, then reproduce their mouse movements for a while. Every now and again, introduce a glitch, or random swirly movement.

I had apple juice in a container in the fridge when I was pregnant. A coworker and I worked together to convince a squeamish colleague that the liquid was my urine because I had a doctor's visit that afternoon and they wanted my first urine of the day for testing. We explained this to him as he was taking his lunch out of the mini fridge, and he turned pale.

At another place I worked, there was a slice of play-food pickle that made the rounds mysteriously into different peoples' pockets and purses. It was the Mystery Pickle.

My boss was in the habit of setting out stuffed animals on her desk. She had a differen one for each holiday, and it so happened at the time of the prank she had Lamb Chop.

I organized a kidnapping. It started out small, a few pictures and ransome notes. Soon the word spread about the kidnapping.

To make a long story short 8 hours later she found Lamb Chop gagged blind folded and with a cigarette in its mouth in the storage bin.

We have a large office and our Office Manager was in on it as well as accounting and several other departments. One of the ransome notes was a box of rasinetts with a note that said "Mommy, help they are scaring the crap out of me".

This has GOT to be one of the most funny lenses that I have ever seen! Reading this stuff reminds me of the time that someone almost sabotaged my husband's business (can vending machines). It seems that someone was able to get a hold of an extra key to open one of the vending machines at a particular business. This character cleaned up at night and would take time to rearrange the cans in the machine so that no matter which can of soda you selected, you always got the wrong one! Some people simply have too much time on their hands...

Years ago when computer security was lower and people didn't need passwords to log in, when people went out to lunch we would run a program on their workstation that looked just like the login screen. When they came back they would try to log in, and the computer would display messages "Invalid Password, "System Busy Try Again Later" etc. Every time they pressed Enter they got another message, and the computer would get more irrate, finally telling them " Look I Told You To Leave Me Alone - I'm Busy" (or worse!). Finally, the program we ran would log them off, and they would be able to log on normally. The funniest thing was listening to them trying to explain what happened.

This is the funniest collection ever! I have one that provided a measure of amusement- A friend made the mistake of telling EVERYONE she hated spiders. At Halloween time. In a boring office. Where I worked. So I got a giant bag of black plastic spider rings and hid them EVERYWHERE. For 31 days. :-D

My most favorite thing is office pranks. When one of my co-workers was off for a few days we drew a stick figure on the floor and taped off her work area with crime scene tape. She was off for several days and we received great comments. One of my delivery men really thought something happened!

Hilarious! Someone once scattered around the floor of my office a bunch of post-its w/'Dodgers' written on it and a broom. I am a Dodger fan and he... wasn't.

OMG! What a funny lens! We have actually pulled a few of the pranks you've mentioned here, but I think I may have to try the office supplies in jello thing. another good office prank is to wrap EVERYTHING in the cubie or office saran wrap or foil. Takes them hours to get to their stuff.

One time I took a Co workers pager in the lunch room and put it above the ceiling. One that has the white pieces that lay in the track above. He would call his pager then hear the sound and run around the room trying to figure out where the sound was coming from.

Put black shoe polish on the ear piece of headphones. The best headphones are the ones with the microphones on them. When they put the headset on, their ear will be totally black. This works great considering most earpieces are black in coloe, so the polish should blend right in!

Pick up some helium balloons while you are out at lunch and place them in your victim's cubicle. Many eating establishments have balloons for kids. Everyone passing by their cube will ask them if it is their birthday. For the truly evil, use black over the hill balloons.

My dad worked at a machine shop as foreman. One day, all of his workers left a pile of cigarettes on the floor. He went to get a broom, and when he was standing at exactly the right point, sweeping, his coworkers pulled the release string, and 5 lbs. of flour fell on his head! they videoed it too!

I saw this on the net someplace, sometime ago.

1)push the "prnt scr" and then open it in Paint.

2)save it as a .bmp or a .jpg.

3)open My Pictures and the "use as a desktop"

      4) Watch the victim go absloutely Monkeybutt trying to figure why his computer is frozen with only the mouse moving.

A good one I have done is in Ms Word change the auto-correction for a word to something else, don't use a word they are going to use lots, ie we set it so it changed the computer users name to Moron, he couldn't figure it out for ages.

In any office that uses 3 ring binders, get a length of string and tie them all together (looping it through the rings) so that pulling one off the shelf will bring the lot down.

My boss was very thoughtful and gave me a gift card to a chain bookstore. I was at a loss -- how could I repay his generosity? Then I remembered he's a big fan of Tom Peters, Zig Ziglar, et al., so I bought one of those gag motivational posters and surreptiously mounted it in his cubicle.
