Oprah Quotations on Making Choices
Oprah Winfrey is best known for her talk show called Oprah. It was the highest rated talk show in history. It ran from 1986 to 2011. Oprah also created her own magazine and television network. She is the richest African American of the twentieth century. But Oprah was not always rich and famous. On January 29, 1954 she was born to a single teen mom in a rural area of Mississippi named Kosciusko. Her mom was a maid. They were so poor that Oprah wore often wore dresses made of potato sacks. In her childhood she lived in the inner city of Milwaukee. She was raped at age nine and became pregnant at age fourteen. Her baby died while he was an infant.
She has been no stranger to loss. Besides for losing her son, she also lost her brother and sister. Her brother died of AIDS in 1989 and her sister died of a cocaine overdose in 2003.
When Oprah was seventeen years old she entered and won the Miss Black Tennessee Beauty Pageant. She won the beauty pageant she got the attention of a local radio station. She worked for them part time for three years at the end of high school and the beginning of college. Her choice to be in media was no surprise to her family. When she was a child she would use a brush as a microphone to interview her corncob doll. She won an oratory contest in high school which came with a full scholarship to Tennessee State University.
After college, Oprah worked for a news station in Nashville. She was the youngest anchor and first black female news anchor at the television station. Oprah started her talk show in 1986. In the beginning it was the normal tabloid type tv show but she transformed the show to an intimate setting to talk about literature, self improvement, and spirituality. Her openness in talking about taboo issues is believed to have been a major factor in allowing LGBT people to enter the main stream.
When Oprah started her network called OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) she premiered a new show called Oprah Lifeclass. As Oprah's Lifeclass Facebook page explains Oprah's Lifeclass is a self-help program that showcases "all of Oprah's lessons, revelations and aha moments over the past 25 years broken down to help make your life better, happier, bigger, richer - more fulfilling." Oprah's Lifeclass is about making choices and being the best person you can be. Here are my favorite Oprah quotes about making choices:
How to Find Courage to Follow Your Purpose?
In Oprah's Lifeclass, an audience member asked "How do you find the courage to follow your purpose?" Bishop T.D. Jakes told the audience member:
"If you resist your fear, your faith will get bigger... You don't always fit your dream perfectly... Either I let my fear win and give up on my destiny or I resisted by fear... The good news is, you might not fit your dream perfectly, it may not be perfectly aligned, take baby steps, resist your fear, fear will never lead you to a positive end. Go for your faith and what you believe... Own the fact that you are worthy of being your own best friend, celebrate yourself and push yourself on."
