Oprah Winfrey's Interview With Whitney Houston's Family

Updated on March 11, 2012

Oprah Winfrey interviewed the late Whitney Houston's family on OWN television on Sunday, March 11, 2012 exactly one month after the singer's death on February 11, 2012. The superstar was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub. As of today, the real cause of her death still has not been released to the public.

Oprah was the one granted the first and only interview with the family because of her close connection with the Houstons. When Whitney came back on the scene after a 7-year absence from singing, she appeared on a two-hour special with Oprah three years ago. That special was aired again before the interview with the family.

Interview Begins with Bobbi Kristina Brown

Oprah appeared at Gary and Patricia's Houston house outside Atlanta for the interview.

The interview began with Oprah appearing and briefly talking with Patricia until Bobbi Kristina, 19, Whitney's only child appeared. The three of them never sat down. Oprah didn't do a formal interview with Bobbi Kristina. It seems more like a chat between the two with Bobbi Kristina frequently using nervous gestures such as touching her face and patting her hair.

She assured Oprah she was doing as well as can be expected. She shared with Oprah that she want to carry on the legacy of her mother by using her "voice" to sing and act.

Bobbi Kristina said she saw her mother as just "mom." It was not until they went on tour and at the funeral that she realized her mother was a worldwide icon and was loved by so many.

Interview with Patricia Houston

Oprah and Patricia sat for a much longer interview.

Patricia is married to Whitney's brother. She was her manager, close friend and confidante. Patricia answered some personal questions about Whitney since she knew her well after working for her over 20 years,

She said the handwriting was on the wall about Whitney's drug use, and it was not Bobby Brown, Whitney's ex-husband who was to blame for her substance abuse.

Patricia recounted the day Whitney died. At times both she and Oprah shed tears during the memories.

Patricia said, "Whitney is at peace now. The struggle is over. She is with God, her ultimate protector."

Interview with Gary Houston, Whitney's Oldest Brother

Gary joined his wife on the couch. He talked frankly about Bobby Brown saying the two of them got along very well. He said the family felt violated when the open casket picture of his sister appeared on the front page of a tabloid.

When asked how he was doing, Gary said:

"It is well with my soul. It is well with my soul."

Gary, also a singer, said what he will miss the most is singing with his sister.

End of the Interview

The interview ends with Oprah, Patricia and Gary standing beside the piano and their daughter, Rayah, playing "I Look to You" as Gary sings. He does well before bursting into tears.

A clip is shown with Whitney Houston singing "I Look to You" and the 90-minute special concludes.

Penlady, I was very impressed with Pat Houston. I have never seen a sister-in-law so devoted and trusted.

This is an accurate piece on Oprah's interview with the Houston family as well as interesting. I watched it on Sunday night and found Pat Houston to be an honest person, not one to shy away from the truth.

Jdove-miller, yes OWN will air the interview again and again. In the meantime, there are lot of videos on line covering most of it.

I missed the interview (thought about it the minute it went off), so thanks for the recap. Perhaps O will show it again.

Thanks for commenting Barbara Kay. The will be airing the interview over and over on OWN. It came on several times last night.

For clarification, the hair dresser entered the room after the body had been removed from the tub where she was given CPR.

I did see a portion of the interview on Good Morning Anerica. I'm impressed with Bobbi. She intends to legally change her last name to Houston and no more Brown. I wish her the best.

I missed the interview. Thanks for a recap of it. I found it odd that the hair dresser says she found Whitney on the bathroom floor and the news said she drowned in the bathtub. Thanks again for an article well written.

Thanks, drbj, for reading and commenting on my summary of Oprah's interview with the Houston family. I watched it twice last night on OWN. I think the interview was done in good taste like only Oprah could have done since she has such a close connection with the family.

Thank you, revmjm, for your review of the Oprah interview with members of Whitney's family. The video you included is beautiful and inspiring. Thank you for that, too.
