Oscars 2016 Predictions: Who Will Win and Who Should Win

The Big 6

Best Picture

Who Will Win?

Up until this moment, the winner of the night's top prize is very unclear among three top contenders (Revenant, Big Short, and Spotlight). The Big Short won the PGA's, Spotlight won the SAG's and the The Revenant won the DGA's. But then again, The Revenant also got the Golden Globe's and the BAFTA's. However, The Revenant is not nominated for its screenplay, and there's no Best Picture winner in the past that missed the screenplay nom.

I still think The Revenant will win, and it will be a back-to-back victory for Inarritu after winning with Birdman last year, a first in the history!

Who Should Win?

Personally, my favorite film this year is Room, and I would probably pick it as the Best Picture winner. However, its chances are slim, so I have to go with Spotlight, this year's important movie. Not necessarily the best film of the bunch but I think it's too important to lose.

Best Director

Who Will Win?

Inarritu won last year with Birdman, and it's not hard to think that this year's winner will probably be Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu again! Before the nominations were announced, The Martian's director, Ridley Scott was the assumed frontrunner, but after missing the cut, Inarritu quickly moved to the top. Taking home the highly-acclaimed DGA award, it's almost certain that he'll win again this year, a back-to-back feat that's very hard to achieve!

Who Should Win?

I still think Inarritu should win, his showy direction in The Revenant is definitely one of the main reasons why I love the film so much. But then again, I would also love the Mad Max director, George Miller to get some recognition and upset tomorrow.

Best Actor

Who Will Win?

Good news everyone, Leonardo DiCaprio is almost certainly taking home his highly-awaited Best Actor award. Bad news, the memes will have to end. And I admit, they're always hilarious!

Who Should Win?

Leonardo DiCaprio period. If you have seen The Revenant, then yes, you can really see him giving his all just to make sure he's finally getting it. Now one would argue that it's just because of the surrounding, but still, acting is acting! Sidenote: I still think Jacob Tremblay should have been in contention!

Best Actress

Who Will Win?

Just like Leo himself, I'm almost pretty sure that Room's Brie Larson will win the award. Although there's that part of me that thinks Brooklyn's Saoirse Ronan would upset despite not winning most of the precursors!

Who Should Win?

As a solid Cate Blanchett fan, I biasedly think she should take home this award again after just recently winning with Blue Jasmine two years ago. But that's before I watched Room. Now I think Brie Larson should take this!

Best Original Screenplay

Who Will Win?

Should Spotlight take home an award tomorrow, it'll definitely be this one! It's still in the running for Best Picture but that's it for this film!

Who Should Win?

Spotlight's screenplay is great, in fact it would be fine for me if it will be the eventual winner, but personally my favorite this year is the highly-clever and inventive script of Inside Out and I think it should win.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Who Will Win?

For the same reason with Spotlight, The Big Short will likely take this as its consolation prize.

Who Should Win?

Room would make for a great upset should it be awarded as the eventual winner!

Who will win Best Picture?

The Revenant will probably win, but Spotlight and The Big Short can likely take home the crown!

Other Awards

Best Supporting Actor

Who Will Win?

Sylvester Stallone's stunning performance in Creed makes him a highly-favored winner for the Supporting Actor category. He'll be the eventual winner!

Who Should Win?

I still think Stallone should win. After watching his performance I was punched!

Best Supporting Actress

Who Will Win?

Alicia Vikander's performances in The Danish Girl and Ex-Machina makes her the IT-girl this year. She's only nominated for her performance in Danish Girl for which she should be in the lead and not supporting. Other than that, she had huge support in most award shows which makes me pretty confident that she'll take it.

Who Should Win?

Still Alicia Vikander. She almost carried the whole film!

Best Animated Feature

Who Will Win?

It's hard to imagine Inside Out not winning this. It put Pixar back into the critical acclaim that were missing in their recent offerings.

Who Should Win?

Inside Out.

Best Cinematography

Who Will Win?

Emmanuel Lubezki's stunning camera work in The Revenant will eventually give him a three-peat Oscar win tomorrow.

Who Should Win?

I must agree to the fact that even though Roger Deakins' cinematography in Sicario is great, this award should be awarded to Emmanuel Lubezki. The biggest reason why I watched The Revenant in the cinema was to experience its awe-inspiring cinematography, and it didn't fail to deliver.

Best Original Score

Who Will Win?

I'm almost certain Ennio Morricone's score in The Hateful Eight will be the eventual winner. Although I wouldn't count out John William's work in Star Wars VII.

Who Should Win?

My personal favourite this year is Michael Giacchino's score in Inside Out but it wasn't nominated so I will have to choose another favourite of mine. And that will be Carter Burwell's score in Carol. That was absolutely breathtaking and beautiful.

Technical Awards/Documentary/Foreign-Language Film

Bold Predictions:

Mad Max will likely take most of the Technical Awards except for Best Visual Effects. Star Wars VII will win in that category. The Revenant will also get either the Sound Mixing or Sound Editing awards. I have no clear idea who will win Best Film Editing but it better not go to Star Wars VII.

Amy will win Best Documentary. I am rooting for Sanjay's Super Team to win Best Animated Short. And Son of Saul will also win Best Foreign-Language Film.
