Outlander - Facts Quotes and Did you Knows?

“Your face is my heart Sassenach, and the love of you is my soul”
— Diana Gabaldon'You're not Frank, who the devil are you?!
(Quote from Claire on meeting Black Jack Randall) (c) Diana Gabaldon
If you haven't heard of this series, where have you been?
Set in the 18th Century, Outlander spans at least three generations of family, and over 40 years in the life of the Frasers. Starting with Jamie and Claire.
On holiday in Scotland with her husband Frank Randall just after the second world war, Claire Randall, a nurse, is determined to rekindle their marriage after a long separation.
One day, on a walk to take in the view and visit the Standing Stones that the locals all claim are magic, Claire steps into the circle and, leaning on one of the tall stones she falls through and finds that she has time traveled back to Scotland, 1745.
To begin with she believes she has stepped into a Movie Set, but after being chased by the Red Coat English army led by one Black Jack Randall, she is horrified to realise that not only is her husband's ancestor evil, but he is determined to find out her secret.
Running away she is captured by the Scots and the romance between her and Jamie begins.
There is a lot more to it, but well, you'll just have to watch the series!

' What sort of corset that might be'?
(c) Diana Gabaldon
This sweetheart bodice fits perfectly with what Claire would have been wearing back then when she fell through time. No modern undergarments for her! Perfect!
And of course there aren't any hard to do up laces like there were back then! These days its slip on slip off!
Can you imagine the hours that were spent just trying to get into the darn things? lol!
Did You Know?
The first recorded use of a Corset was way back in 2000 BC! And back then the women, and sometimes men too, wore the garment over the clothes. It was much later that it was used as an undergarment.

A Great Party Piece for Kids! A British Redcoat soldier!
Whether it was fighting in England or over seas they knew a thing or too!
Whether they were fighting the French, or defending the homeland, these guys were pretty fierce!
What a great costume!
It wasn't only Black Jack Randall who wore this costume, all of the English Army did too!
Here's a bit of history for you.
Did you know?
That the English started wearing these Red coats way back in the 16th Century and right up until the end of the 19th?
Well I never!
Jamie shows us how to wear the Kilt!

'So, what's that you're wearing under ye Kilt Jamie?'
Full 8 yards with a 24 inch drop. This is the original Great Kilt that Jamie Fraser would have worn.
Back in the 18th Century Scottish men would only have worn this length as the shorter kilts came in later.
This Kilt can be worn a number of ways, as you can see by watching Jamie place it around his waist, across his shoulders and as a blanket to keep warm.
It was a very versatile piece of cloth, and even today some Scottish Clans still wear them!
Cool eh?
Did you Know?
There are hundreds of Scottish Clans! Each with their own Tartan, and Clan Crest! Many still have a Clan Chief but lots of them no longer have that title.
'That's a lot in your Sporran Jamie!' Or are you just pleased to see me?!'
Check out this Medieval Scottish Sporran and belt! Methinks Jamie Fraser would love this. It has its own Celtic design and is genuine high quality leather.
Just think, he can help to carry Claire's herbs along with his knife and coins and other bits and pieces!
The Scots first started using Sporrans hundreds of years ago, and they are made mainly from leather or fur. Obviously these days the fur is fake. But still very impressive.

Geillis Duncan was real!
'The question you had before I think it is possible, 1968.'
(c) Diana Gabaldon
So says Geillis, which causes Claire to take a breath and....Well, you will see!
But back to the clothes. I love this beautiful Shawl. I remember one I had many years ago, they are so warm, and come in amazing colors. Of course you don't have to be a time traveler to wear one!
Here is a 'Did you Know'?
That Geillis Duncan was a real person? Yes, amazing eh? Evidently she lived in the time of King James VI of Scotland, and James the First of England.
James was so superstitious he started the Witch Trials because he was convinced women who were witches were out to get him!
So, Geillis Duncan, the real Geillis from history, was hung as a witch. The trial was called the North Berwick Witch Trials.
For more information on the Witch Trials: North Berwick witch trials
'Cold hands warm heart?'
And in the cold of the Highlands of Scotland you are definitely going to need these wool knitted gloves.
Why, how would Claire administer to all her patients if her hands were too cold?
Back then the clothes were very similar to what we wear today. Of course everything was hand made and could be very smelly!
Did you know?
To set the dye in clothes the women and sometimes the men who were curing leather, would have to drink lots of water, beer and other beverages purely so that they could pee in a bucket!
Why? Well for helping the dye to set of course! The cloth had to be well and truly soaked in the liquid to make sure the dye did not run! Pooh!

'Oh look its a dragonfly in Amber!'
Why not treat yourself to these amazing Scottish Outlander Jewelry gifts? I really love the Lallybroch necklace but the dragonfly is calling to me too!
Maybe if I buy them I will find myself a real Jamie Fraser! Now wouldn't that be something?
Did you know?
Most people believe that Amber is tree sap. This isn't quite true. It is in fact a fossilized resin which is a semi - solid organic substance that is secreted in pockets within the cells of the plant!
Enjoy!

Outlander is my guilty pleasure. I marvel at the expertise the author shows about history, medicine and all kinds of arcane things. I watched the TV show because I like time travel and then I had to read the books. I'm almost done with the fourth one now. And I love that theme song.
One of my all-time favs. Could they have possibly chosen a more perfect Jamie for the series? What a dream boat! Fun read, as always Nell.
I absolutely LOVE this series. Everything about it, the characters, the clothes, the story, the stunning Scottish scenery....there aren't many series that I would recommend as "not to be missed" but this is number one on the list. It's not appropriate for children, so make sure they're in bed.
outlander seems very interesting series to watch. You have beautifully described this series.
This is the first I have heard of this series, it looks really good. I shall be keeping an eye out for when it comes to the UK. Thanks for a great lens.
THis is the first I've heard of this series. I do like the era and the clothing pictured on set. You made this an interesting and enjoyable read, as always.
I am always on the lookout for good series, which are too few and far between. It's probably just as well since I don't have a lot of time for TV viewing these days. The ones I do watch are almost all British or American-British productions. So why am I not surprised with Outlander -- and where have I been?? Thank you, Nell, for the heads up. I will definitely give this program a look-see. :-)
Sometimes I wish I had a TV, but I really don't have time for it. Didn't this start out as a movie? It definitely rings a bell.
I have not been under a rock but only have Netflix. So I will check and see if it is on there as it sounds like something I would enjoy.
Thanks for getting me interested...hoping all is well with you.
Many Angels are on the way to you this evening ps
I have not seen The Outlander series. The plot is different and interesting. Going back in time, being captured, sounds interesting. I love the way you have provided facts throughout. Enjoyed reading. Great hub.
I am not familiar with this either but I like the idea of a guy's dress being shorter than mine, Yeah, lol.
It would make a fun dress up if I didn't have to buy all that material and make it!
Fun read!
Nell, I thought I was familiar with this show but I must be confusing it with something else. The Outlander I know ran several years ago and it was about a man who was from the early years you speak of, but was living in modern day America. He wore a black leather trench coat and had magical powers. What they were escapes me at the moment.
Anyway, the clothing you highlight here are attractive. However, they appear to be quite heavy and binding, especially the corset.
an entertaining hub
Nell I think you can stream it now on Amazon.. however best show ever has to be Sleepy Hollow.. Oh Yeah!!!!
Cool ideas. I think period costumes are awesome.
Hi Nell.
I haven´t seen the series, but did read the book many years ago and I loved it. As soon as you described it I remembered that I was waiting for my friend to get book 2 but she never did.
Another of your very enjoyable hubs Nell, and I did laugh at your sporran joke.
Don't know how I've missed this series but you have now created a new fan, Nell, with this extraordinary and compelling introduction. And that Jamie - what a dreamboat!
Never heard of the show but it seems all the rage and I love the costumes!
Haven't heard of the show but you got me interested. The video of Jamie and the kilt is a lesson in itself. I know I would share your love for the fashion. Thanks for a good introduction to Outlander.
Love this hub Nell! Are 't the costumes to die for? I could fit right into the 18Th century with those clothes. I would miss indoor plumbing but men in kilts would take my mind off that! Lol! I love the books and the show. Moore is doing a great job adapting the books to the screen.
lol. Nell, I'm married to my own Scotsman, complete with kilt and sporran etc. He's always been a rugged outdoorsman who favoured the traditional 'blanket' kilt instead of the fancy pleated ones. (Weird for me to watch Outlander. When Jamie ages a bit, he'll look just like my husband.)
Funny to think how much time I wasted trying to explain Scotland, kilts etc to friends overseas when I lived there. It would have been much easier to say, 'Watch Outlander!'
I've been to feasts in big halls in old castles/estates that could have easily been an Outlander set. Loved the first video series (yes, we bought the DVD) and will buy the second.
Worth mentioning though to anyone with children, as much fun as it is to watch Outlander with your children, there's a few sex scenes you'll probably want to avoid with the kids. lol.
A beautiful hub! Your great idea of costumes is unique and so well-researched.
Well Nell, my wife fell in love with the audio book...and I happened to just be around while she was listening (I have to admit it sucked me in). We haven't had the tv series here yet and maybe I will have to purchase the DVDs and I will score big points in her good books if it lives up to the books. By what you say here it obviously does. Nice costumes to for a fancy dress up.
Oh, I love these costumes. Perfect for a dress party. But, you can incorporate some of these ideas into your every day wear. I really want to read the books, because I have heard that they are really great.
Great job Nell. With Halloween right around the corner this is a perfect idea for costumes. So, party or no, you can dress like the Outlander.
Loved your descriptions too. My daughter's hooked but I don't get the channel it's on. Will have to rent it at some point.
Ummmm....I've never heard of this show. I'm feeling a bit "out of touch" right now. :) And we don't go to costume parties...now I'm really feeling like a fish out of water. :) But thanks for the information, Nell. I'm ready if this ever becomes a factor in my life. LOL
