Pan Am: The Genuine Article

Pan Am is a show about a flight crew who works for Pan Am airlines in the early 1960(s) during the height of the cold war. Dean is the first young captain that is having a rather torrid affair with an Airline Executive’s mistress.

Maggie is a free spirit who is also the pursuer. She is in charge of all of the stewardess. We find out that Maggie came from a small town and only attended college under and assumed identity. And in all probability her transcripts were purchased. Just about everything about Maggie is made up so she could be a Pan Am stewardess as she is ruthless but sadly, she sells out Dean’s affair to save her job.

Kate is also quite ambitious. She is tri-lingual and considered the brains of the family. She too is a Pan Am stewardess but one that has been recruited as a courier for the CIA, although one can not be certain about this either as she is not paid or trained by the agency. She has been encouraged to get close to a diplomat from Yugoslavia who is suppose to be a communist by the name of Nicco Lonzona. Kate has an intimate relationship with Nicco but the Agency asks her to turn him and Kate realizes she is in way to deep. She is expected to get Nicco Lonzona

Laura is Kate’s pretty sister. And Laura is trying to break free of her pretty image as that is all anyone notices about her. Kate asks Laura to buy her a real alligator handbag and a Rolex which almost lands Laura and Maggie in jail. While in the police station Laura learns that Maggie has lied on her resume’ to work for Pan Am and realizes Maggie is not the genuine article.

Colette is a French woman who is getting over an affair with a married man.

Review

The show Pan Am is a bit more dramatic and tragedy then originally first aired. While Maggie most certainly is better off as a Pan Am stewardess that it is not clear about the rest of the characters who seem to make extremely bad life choices. In real life the employees of Pan Am were but more sensible and they were very educated. They would not have been able to survive in other countries.

It is sad to see the crew back stab each other because quite frankly that was not my experience at all with the Pan Am group and I find it odd that the show Pan Am has that particular crew flying to so many different destinations. But it is a television show and it must be tragedy in order for it to have a plot.
