Melody Thomas Scott deserves credit

Peter Bergman is celebrating a milestone of three decades portraying Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless. This may never have taken place if not for his castmate Melody Thomas Scott, who portrays Nikki Newman. It all started in 1989 when Terry Lester, who was portraying Jack at the time, decided to walk away from the CBS daytime drama. Soaps She Knows at Soaps.com indicates that Melody recommended Bergman to her husband Edward J. Scott who at the time was the executive producer at Y&R.

Peter Bergman, had been portraying Cliff Warner on All My Children but was suddeny released from that role. When approached by The Young and the Restless, the actor was not sure about taking on another recast character. He decided to accept the position and auditioned with Jerry Douglas who portrayed John Abbott and Jess Walton who was a recast for Jill. The rest continues to be history in the making and as viewers know, Bergman was hired and first began appearing as Jack in November 1989. Melody Thomas Scott's character Nikki became a friend, wife, and lover to John Abbott’s first born son and the connection remains strong 30 years later.

Jack Abbott and Victor Newman

Over the course of the 30-year journey, The Young and the Restless has developed a dynamic between Jack and Victor Newman that seems to have come full circle. The men have been bitter rivals in the business world, often utilizing cut-throat methods against each other. They have been rivals for Nikki's affection and have kept their families in a constant feud. Along the way, there have been ties that are supposed to bind, which only cause contention. Victor married Jack's sister Ashley and they had a daughter Abby. Phyllis married Nick Newman and they had a daughter, Summer who Victor dotes on as a granddaughter. Jack helped raise his stepdaughter who at one time he thought was his own child.

Victor had Jack kidnapped and replaced him with look-alike Marco. There have been times when Victor's son Adam has seemed more like a son to Jack Than his own father. The relationship between Kyle and Summer keeps the families intertwined. When J.T. left Victor for dead, Jack found him and walked over his seemingly unconscious body. He did eventually call the paramedics. Most recently the two men had a drink together after Neil Winters memorial service and seemed to come to a sort of truce after Jack found Victor about to faint in a parking garage. Mr. Abbott even expressed sorrow when it was believed that the Newman patriarch had died. It looks like at this point the two business icons have turned a corner in their dealings with each other.

Jack's future is uncertain

Jack has undergone a number of changes during the past few years. His sister Ashley had him wrongly thinking that John Abbott was not his biological father. There were major changes at Jabot and Dina's Alzheimer's disease began taking a toll on the entire family. Jack went away to find himself and allowed Kyle to run the family dynasty, temporarily. When he returned to Genoa City he told his son and his brother Billy, that he wanted them to work together as Co-CEOs. Now he has just found out that Theo Vanderway's father Eric is the child his mother gave up for adoption and his half brother.

Unlike his castmate Eric Braeden, Peter Bergman has not made any statements regarding his future on The Young and the Restless. Braeden has stated in interviews and in his book, I'll Be Damned that neither he nor Victor is going anywhere. Fans of Bergman and Jack can only hope for the same. Spoiler alerts have not given any updates regarding the Abbott family beyond their search for Dina's son so the future of the current family patriarch is uncertain at this point.

Soap Hub says Jack will confess all to a stunned Theo, but cousin Kyle will react like a jerk and kick his friend to the curb. Jack will have his hands full trying to reunite the cousins as we as build his own relationship with his half brother an nephew. Thank you, Melody Thomas Scott, for your wise decision. Happy 30th anniversary to Peter Bergman and his beloved character Jack Abbott. May they both be around for three more decades.

Quite an update you have here. I remember my mom and grandma watching this show when I was a kid. I've watched it off and on over the years, but there are so many new characters now (as evidenced by your recap here) that if I watched an episode I'd be totally lost as to what's going on.
