The Process of Picking an Idol.

American Idol has become a national phenomenon. Beginning in early January, as contestants compete for top singing positions around the United States.

Judges have come and gone but the last two years and longer for one they have remained the same Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and lastly Harry Connick Jr.

Each year judges travel around the country giving contestants the chance to audition for a spot to tryout in Hollywood. It is there that the major weeding out process takes place. Then the true competition begins in ernest as each week americans vote on their favorite singer.

The biggest change for the year is the decrease in prime time from two night 2 hour time slot per week to one night.

The beginning weeks can be a bit trying as every singing wannabe tries out but the show tries to give the viewing audience just a peak of these. The true test is saved for California.

As the show progresses the judges have top pick over who stays on until further in the season when they release their grip to the American Public.

Past Judges

Past favorite judges that have since left include Simon Cowell. He was known as the judge "you love to hare" . He was not discreet with his criticism nor his praise for a contestant. Randy Jackson stayed for 12 seasons and it was quite a shock when he departed.

Paula Abdul had tremendous chemistry with Simon Cowell and they kept the audience wanting more. Steven Tyler from Aerosmith kept the audience laughing with his antics but his judging lasted only 2 years. He actually appeared in drag for his own audition during the 2012 season.

Less memorable judges include Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carrie, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen Degeneres. *

Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick are fast becoming regulars. Whether Keith Urban does well depends on how his hosting style develops. He has a polite, well mannered boyish charm that could serve him well. Time will tell. I do remember Jennifer leaving one year as she stated it was a struggle for her to turn the young hopefuls down. This can often be seen in her tears when she lets a contestant go home for more experience.

The !4th Season

This is the 14th season of the show and according to the judges promises to be one of the best. Harry Connick Jr was quoted as saying the chemistry between the judges is good and no major changes are planned so far aside from the decrease in airtime.

Carrie Underwood may be known as the most famous winner. She was the first female country singer to win during season 4. She is touted to make a meer $31 million a year and has won 5 Grammys and is said to be the fourth top recording artist behind Taylor Swift and Michael Buble..

Other memorable winners include Katharine McPhee, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson toname a few.

Interestingly Kelly Clarkson, season 1 winner is said by Esquire Magazine to have thesingle best voice of a pop singer of out rime

The Winners for 2011

I was first brought into American Idoldom in 2011 when my adult children told me about it. For that reason I will offer a little history on Season 2011.

Phillip LaDon Phillips Jr was born on September 20,1990 in Leesburg Ga. He attended lee county High school and graduated from Albany Technical School. He missed graduation in order to participate in American Idol.

He auditioned for American Idol in Savannah. Ga. to the song "Superstition" and was asked to sing another song with his guitar. He sang "Thriller" by Michael Jackson. He was chosen as one of the tope 25 semi finalists on February 25, 2012.

He was mentored by his friend and brother-in-law, Benjamin Neil.

His favorite singers and songwriters inclue john lang, John Butler, Dave Matthews and Damien Rice.

After winning his places one of the top 13 finalists he had to be taken to the hospital for severe kidney pain. He was found to be suffering from kidney stones. This is one to the most painful conditions one can suffer from. He is at this writing still awaiting surgery for the kidney stones.

My Personal Favorite

I was actually hoping Josh Ledet would wins with his boyish charm and sincere Christian character. He took me away when he sang "When a Man loves a Woman" but I was totally smitten when he sang "This Is a Man's World". I must admit Phillip also had my eye. It was speculated from the early onset by many that Phillips would win this years American Idol. He was said to not only be WGWG or white guy with guitar. He had a genuine sincere attitude and was not afraid to sing the way he knew he could best exemplify his talent even at the risk of losing some popularity.

Jessica Sanchez, his fellow opponent in the finals told him he was going to win but he sincerely denied it.

"The Leesburg, Ga., native never appeared at the bottom of the pack, a testament not only to his die-hard fan base that kept him safe but also to some of his more talked-about performances. Like the time he turned Usher’s “U Got It Bad” into an acoustic ditty or unleashed a flawless take on the obscure _ for “Idol,” anyway _ Damien Rice tune “Volcano.” (The Washington Times)

At last writing Phillip still had not had the surgery he so much needs to remove the kidney stones lodged in his left kidney due to a sinus infection which prevented the doctors from scheduling surgery. I must say it is pretty amazing he managed to get through the entire season without the surgery.

It is now being speculated whether he will continue to rise in popularity or to become more obscure as Lee Dewyze, the 2009 winner did. I liked him also. I quess I am an American Idol Groupie now!

I watched this years season and Phillip was my pick from about halfway through the series. I liked that he stayed exactly who he was, not adhering to to outside pressures. I think he'll have a great career. I really like the way he sings "Home". Awesome hub.
