Ten Popular Sing Along Songs: Classic Oldies

Updated on July 14, 2016

What Makes a Good Sing Along Song?

Songs are meant to be sung, of course, but some songs are almost impossible NOT to sing. They're the kind of songs that get stuck in your head. They're usually easy songs to sing, with catchy lyrics, great harmonies, and an infectious melody. When this type of song comes on the car radio or our iPod, and whether or not we know all the words to it or can really sing at all, we sing along like we own it. And it feels good!

Some of us are private sing along types, while others don't care who is within ear's shot. I'm usually a sing-along-in-the-car or sing-on-the-dance-floor type, but sometimes I'll let loose in a karaoke bar after a few glasses of wine. Regardless of the type you are, I'll bet you have sung along to most, if not all, of these ten popular, classic oldies.

"Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffet

This 1977 song will be around forever with everyone singing along! Every Parrothead knows the words to the entire song, with everyone else knowing at least the chorus of the song:

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville, searchin' for my lost shaker of salt, some people claim there's a woman to blame, but I know, it's nobody's fault.

Classic sing along!

"That's the Way I Like it" by KC and the Sunshine Band

You have to love the simple lyrics in this enduring 1975 oldies classic.

That's the way, uh huh, uh huh, I like it, uh huh, uh huh. That's the way, uh huh, uh huh, I like it. Uh huh, uh huh.

Were you singing along? Need I say more?

You HAVE to watch this one. Cute!

"Old Time Rock 'n' Roll" by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

No matter where you are, when you hear that piano intro, this all-time classic rock'n'roll song takes you back to the best party you ever partied at. Right? The whole place comes alive with everyone singing along to the chorus:

Still love that old time rock and roll. That kind of music just soothes my soul. I reminisce about the days of old, with that old time rock and roll.

You're there right now, aren't you? It even has a great "clap along" part too!

"Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks

One of the most popular sing along songs would have to be the Nineties (okay, it's not such an oldie) mega-hit song by Garth Brooks, "Friends in Low Places." Even if you don't usually sing, I bet you have sung this chorus:

'Cause I got friends in low places, where the Whiskey drowns and the beer chases my blues away, and I'll be okay.....

Likewise you have to sing the "OASIS" in an emphatic manner on the line:

Think I'll slip on down to the OASIS!

Right? You can't help but sing those parts and the rest of the chorus, especially after a few brewskis! In fact, I'll bet this song is being sung somewhere right now. It might be a party, or a wedding, or in a dimly lit karaoke bar, but some dude and his buddies are clutching that mike (or a beer bottle as a substitute), bellowing it out and the crowd is probably singing along with them!

"Take it Easy" by The Eagles

The Eagles sure knew how to write classic rock songs that would endure, didn't they? Their songs are fun to sing along with, because they're catchy, have good harmonies and great guitar riffs. "Take it Easy" has been around since 1972, with airplay rotation on every classic rock radio station since then.

There are so many great lines to sing in this song. I think everyone loves singing the first few lines:

Well I'm runnin' down the road, tryin' to loosen my load, I've got seven women on my mind, four that want to own me, two that want to stone me, one says she's a friend of mine.

Also, the verse that starts:

I was standin' on the corner in Winslow Arizona...

Come to think of it, I love all the lyrics of this classic oldie!

"Night Owl" by Little River Band

Eighties Little River Band. Wow, what can I say. I LOVE singing along to all their songs. I think it's their great harmonies that really draw us in, don't you? It was hard for me to narrow it down to one song, with so many other fun songs by Little River Band like "Lonesome Loser", "Lady", "Reminiscing", and "Happy Anniversary".

It's the harmonies in the chorus of "Night Owl" that kicks it into high gear for me:

Move on, there's a heart of a night owl calling, to belong, she's crying in the night. Be strong, and find the heart of a night owl fallin', stay up 'til dawn until the night has gone.

Man, those guys could harmonize like nobody else! Even if you don't know the verses, I'm betting you can't resist singing along to this chorus.

Jon Bon Jovi never gets old!

"Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi

Right from the intro, you are singing along about Tommy being on strike from working on the docks and Gina bringing home her paycheck from the diner, but it's the pre-chorus that takes you to that great goosebump level that inspires you to sing along:

We gotta hold on to what we've got, It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not, we got each other and that's a lot for love. We'll give it a shot.

And then, that really singable, B-I-G chorus starts. Every young couple over the years has been able to identify with this great sing along song!

The Beatles Live!

"I Saw Her Standing There" by the Beatles

The sing along fever starts when you hear Paul McCartney say, "One, two, three, four!" Your head bobs and feet start tapping and you bust into:

Well she was just seventeen, you know what I mean...

My favorite part to sing is the song's bridge:

Well my heart went boom, when I crossed that room, and I held her hand in minnneeee.

You you just have to shake your head when you sing the ooooh parts, just like our favorite Liverpool boys did! Great oldies sing along, even if you aren't a baby boomer!

"We Are Family" by Sister Sledge

This Seventies classic may be one of the most fun songs to sing along to, ever. Great music, soulful harmonies and a melody that grabs you. But most of all it's easy to sing!

We are family, I got all my sisters with me, we are family, get up everybody and sing!

That lyric says it all, doesn't it?

Sing Along to any Song by The Bee Gees!

Who hasn't tried singing Barry Gibb's falsetto part of a Bee Gees song? I tried to pick just one song from their catalog, but it was impossible with so many great tunes to choose from!

There are so many Bee Gees songs that give us a pleasant flash back to the disco era, and their harmonies almost beg for us to sing along. Even if we aren't quite sure what the lyrics are in some spots, we move our lips and try! Here are just a few fun singing lines:

"Night Fever" - Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I'm a woman's man, no time to talk..

"Staying Alive" - Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother, you're staying alive, staying alive..

"You Should Be Dancing" - Whatcha doin' on your back? We should be dancin', yeah, we should be dancin', yeah!

And one of my favorites:

"How Deep is Your Love" - And you come to me on a summer breeze, Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave, And it's me you need to show, How deep is your love?

Dang! What did those Gibbs brothers sing that you don't want to sing along with? Fun, fun!

Did I Miss Your Favorite Sing Along Song?

As a songwriter, I wish I could come up with a great song that would become as addictive and enduring as any one of these popular oldies sing along songs. There are others, but these are my favorites. What classic oldie is your favorite to sing along with?

My Boyfriend's Back by the Angels. Stop in the Name of Love by the Supremes. Sugarpie Honeybunch by the Four Tops. Wake Up Little Susie by the Everly Brothers. Surfin' USA by the Beach Boys. Hey Jude by the Beatles. In fact, plenty of songs by the Beatles would fit, especially from their early period. Same goes for several of the other groups mentioned above.

Love the songs you mentioned! One very popular 80's anthem, though not a classic rock oldie is "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-lot. Hahaha!

Okay, somehow you got me with the Night Owl song. All the others are truly reverberating in my head right now. One more to include would be "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere." Pour me something tall and strong, make it a hurricane before I go insane...................

What a great list! I was just saying yesterday that Jimmy Buffet must be tired of singing the same songs in every concert! Although, it's still fun for us to sing them. One of our favorite sing-a-longs is Don Mclean's American Pie. :D
