Powerful Women of Game of Thrones

Updated on August 30, 2014

The reason why I love watching HBO's Game of Thrones is because of how the female characters are presented. Each of them were placed on different circumstances where they have to face danger and overcome complicated situations.

Women in this series are not viewed as weak. Rather, they possess qualities that displays bravery, courage and intelligence. Whether they are in a position of power or not, they won't just submit to cowardice. These women knows that being weak will result to nothing so instead of giving in to despair, they armed themselves with knowledge, exercised good judgment and some had even used fighting skills.

Who are they and why they are powerful? It will take a lot of time to write every one of them so I selected the obvious choices who had shown that girl power rules!

Cersei Lannister

Cersei Lannister, the Queen Regent
Cersei Lannister, the Queen Regent

The first female persona I though of which represents power is none other than the queen itself. It's obvious that she is on this list because first, she is already on a position of power being the Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms. Cersei is someone who will do anything to protect what are hers. She's won't think twice of doing immoral things just to secure her power. This girl is ready to fight tooth and nail without losing her calm. Even though she is a cold-hearted queen, we have to give credit on how she handles herself especially on desperate times. She is cunning and can manipulate people. Her schemes might be something that we hated her for but you gotta admire her guts to perform them.

Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons
Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons

Daenerys Targaryen

The Mother of Dragons is definitely a force to reckoned with! She got an army and she have dragons! Daenerys used to be this quiet, shy girl but due to certain events in her life, she became a strong independent woman who become a great ruler and savior of slaves. She is just and knows how to weigh down her decisions. People back in Westeros are even afraid of her and they haven't even seen her.

She is a perfect example of a woman who overcome discrimination as she didn't let herself be intimidated by the men surrounding her.

Arya Stark

Swift as a deert, Arya Stark

Arya Stark, is the third child of Lord Eddard and Lady Catelyn Stark who has a tomboyish character unlike her sister Sansa. She is not your typical girl as Arya prefers swords and exploration over embroidery and poetry. Her strengths include being fast, skillful and slyness.

She learned how to use a sword and became someone who you don't want to mess around with. For someone who witnessing a lot of death in the family, you would be impressed by how she handled it.

Arya might not be a queen or a ruler but in her own way she proved that girls can fight and be equal to men as well. She is a fighter and she will do anything just avenge those who wronged her and her family.

Brienne of Tarth

Brienne of Tarth

Brienne is the only heir of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evenfall. She is called Brienne the Beauty jokingly because of her unladylike appearance. Her body structure can be compared to the likes of a man, flat-chested and muscular and she's very tall. However Brienne is loyal to those who treat her well. She have high respect to people who had shown genuine kindness to her and had befriended them.

She is someone who also wants equality and it's one reason why she chose the path of knighthood. This is also a way for her to prove that women can be good in combat too and that society should accept that fact. Brienne may have lacked something with her appearance but she is honest, candid and adamant in any situation she's in.

Margaery Tyrell

Margaery Tyrell

Beauty and brains. This is a perfect description for our next powerful women. Margaery Tyrell, is the envy of any women but most especially by Cersei. She is very intelligent and good at scheming as well. Unlike Arya and Brienne, Margaery shows her strengths through her ability to manipulate people like her grandmother. She is well educated and interested with politics.

The small people such as the beggars loved her which dismayed Cersei (her mother-in-law). She always reaches out to the poor getting their favor all the time. Although Margaery is also someone who have a thirst for power, she still has her compassionate side. She had even felt pity towards Sansa who she became friends with, when she is forcibly married to Tyrion Lannister.

Sansa Stark

Many might disagree with me that Sansa is a powerful woman. However, if you will consider the things that she had experienced from the hands of the Lannister (especially with Joffrey), you will be amazed by how she was able to tolerate it. She was treated cruelly, physical, mental, emotional abuse... you name it. But Sansa didn't lose hope. You didn't see her thinking of ending her life because of these.

Deep inside, Sansa has this fighting spirit. I'm beginning to think that she's getting better with lying and being cunning which became an advantage for her. Because of this, she was able to escape the complicated life she had. Sansa's powers comes to her ability to hide her feelings and being able to deceive people. She may be quiet but underneath that, you wouldn't know that she's just waiting for the perfect time to reveal herself and claim justice.

Respect for women of power

These women are just fictional characters but that doesn't mean people like them doesn't exist in real life. On the contrary, these characters represents women we saw in our daily lives. They can be our own mother, sister, teacher, neighbor who have struggles in life but had shown strength and fighting spirit.

We should respect these women and provide equal rights no matter what religion or race they belong to. The show contains political issues as well which can be compared to what we have been experiencing today and you can see that there are some things that hasn't been changed yet. It's time that we open our eyes and respect one another.

It is! It's really a good show although I suggest you watch it without any under age kids around. There are scenes that have a lot of sex and violence involved in. However the storyline is very good.
