Princess Diana Remembered - Princess Diana tenth anniversary ...

Updated on August 31, 2007

Princess Diana tenth anniversary ...

A decade after her death

Princess Diana's memory is still very much alive in the hearts and minds of so many. Like the death of John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King.

This is how I remember her.

This is the famous tiara worn by Queen Mary who was an Aunt to Queen Elizabeth the second. It was designed by Queen Mary in 1914 and was known as the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara. It was loaned to Diana by the Queen and Diana wore it to various state occasions with matching pearl drop earrings. Queen Mary had the tiara altered in around 1935 when the top row of pearl spikes were removed.

These are the diamond earrings that Diana wore on her wedding day on July 29th 1981 for her marriage to Prince Charles.

They were her mother Frances earrings and she lent them to Diana so she could wear them on her wedding day so they became something borrowed.

This is the Spencer family tiara which legend has it traces back to Marie Antoinette.

It is thought that it was made in 1767 but the style would suggest a time around the 1830's.

It is decorated with tulip and star shaped flowers and mounted in gold with silver settings.

In historic tradition a family heirloom like this was held within the family and passed on to the next generation via the wife of the eldest son.

Diana often wore the tiara for meetings with heads of state.

This is the emerald and diamond choker from part of Queen Mary's jewellery collection.

The Queen chose it to give to Diana as Prince Charles' bride as part of her wedding dowery.

Diana famously wore the tiara as a headband during the Royal tour of Australia in 1985.

Prince Charles later bought Diana an Art Deco emerald and diamond bracelet to match.

This is the charm bracelet that Diana received as a gift from Prince Charles. Each year for the first ten years of their marriage he gave her a different charm to add to the bracelet. In 1982 and 1984 he gave her a gold W and H to mark the births of their sons William and Harry. Other charms he bought her included a pair of ballet shoes because Diana had once dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer, a tennis racquet, as tennis was her favourite sport ; a polo cap to represent his love of Polo ; a miniature St Pauls Cathedral for where they married ; a bear for her love of teddy bears ; an apple to represent her love of Manhattan and finally a pig which he must have given her as a private joke. Diana never wore the bracelet in public, she kept it safe and to her it was the most precious reminder of all the good times in her marriage.

This is the beautiful "Swan Lake" jewellery set.

Diana wore the necklace to the Royal gala performance of the ballet Swan Lake at the Royal Albert Hall in London in June 1997 - three months before she died in a car crash in Paris on 31 August.

The necklace was created by Garrard's in the spring of 1997 with Diana's "knowledge and assistance" and included five of the princess's favourite jewels - South Sea pearls.

She wore the necklace to the gala performance of Swan Lake with a sky blue beaded evening dress before returning it to the jewellers for the accompanying pearl and diamond earrings to be completed.

It was eventually sold to a collector from the USA

for £362,500.

Memorial Services Today

Members of the royal family and invited guests will take part in a ceremony at Guards Chapel at noon today where princes William and Harry will lead readings in memory of their mother.

Most people can remember where they were when they heard that Diana's life had been taken by a tragic accident. I invite you to share your stories about the woman who was Queen of so many Hearts.

Diana was the best thing the British had lately. Sadly they did not realize it and did not afford her enough help and protection...bastards!

What a nice tribute. It is sad she died so young and left her two young sons behind. Time flies so quickly, I remember hearing the announcement on the TV the day she died.

Nice dedication, 10 years flied so quickly, she still impacts us. I liked what Harry said about his mother: "To us, just two loving children, she was the best mother in the world," Harry said, praising her "unfaltering love" and adding that, behind the media glare, to her sons she was someone "who laughed hysterically and uncontrollably when sharing something silly ... Encouraged us when we were nervous." http://tinyurl.com/22fdnn

Annie, this was a wonderful tribute to Princess Diana. Very different from others I have seen. I will never understand why Prince Charles chose his current love over Princess Diana.
