Reasons why One Piece is better than Game of Thrones

One Piece 1st Manga Cover

One Piece by Eiichiro Oda

Eiichiro Oda, the Japanese Mangaka and genius behind One Piece, published the first Chapter of One Piece in 1997. During that time, the most popular Manga/Anime was Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama, another Japanese Mangaka, to whom Oda looked up to. The Manga starts with the main character Monkey D. Luffy, who aspires to be the pirate king. Even though the main character states right in the beginning of the series, what he wants to accomplish and what most likely will happen at the end of the Manga, people who follow One Piece, love to see his journey, until he will finally be the pirate king.

By now, you should know, that the world of One Piece revolves around pirates. There is no set period in time and also no set standard of technology in One Piece. One Piece is completely fictional and its world has smaller worlds in it. Different islands/places in One Piece sometimes resemble some parts or aspects of real countries, which can make One Piece relatable to real life. Actually, a lot of characters in One Piece are based on real people. Just a couple episodes in, there is this one character called 'Jango', who is part of a pirate group, which are terrorising and controlling a small town. His appereance resembles the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. He is skinny, has a fancy outfit and even does the moonwalk. You might now think, that he takes away a lot of credit from Oda, because he pulls his creativity from real people, but that is not the case. Even though Jango resembles Michael Jackson in some way, Oda innovates the character in a way, which sparks your interest and makes you forget about Michael Jackson.

And that is one of the main reasons why One Piece is that good. Odas character development is nothing like you have ever seen before. Over the course of the series, there are so many well developed characters, who don't even play that big of a role to the series, but you still show interest in them and can relate to them. Oda even invents backstories for these characters, which can make you cry, laugh harder than you ever have or pull out emotions out of you, which you didn't even know you had.

And that is the case for almost any character in the series. Of course, the main characters are even better developed and it is just amazing to see, how detailed everything is. Another point, which makes One Piece insanely good, is Odas attention to detail. He effortlessly pulls out moves like, previewing a small detail in chapter x and coming back to that small detail 5-10 years later and you are just like 'Ok, that is crazy'. People are still finding out about details, which Oda previewed years ago and now are used in the current episodes/chapters.

The best part about One Piece though is, that it is still ongoing. The Anime is now 20 years old, the Manga even older and it will still be a long time, until Luffy finally becomes the pirate king.

One Piece vs Game of Thrones

One Piece and GoT in comparison

To be fair, I haven't read the Game of Thrones books yet and have been a One Piece fan for almost 20 years now. I've also liked Game of Thrones a lot though, especially the seasons before the last ones, but my One Piece love still creates some bias towards it.

So I will only focus on the One Piece Anime in comparison with Game of Thrones as the TV show.

Games of Thrones was created by George R.R. Martin, who is an extremely acclaimed author and also helped out on the production of the TV series. Martins storytelling and character development are extremely good. The first couple seasons of Game of Thrones were the most addicting show, I probably have ever watched in my life. The interest, which I had for the characters were comparible to the ones, Oda had created in One Piece. Also, in Game of Thrones, it was almost impossible to predict what would happen. Especially because the series had an open end to it. In addition to that, a lot of main characters died over the course of the show and many new ones came on, which was something that never happend before.

The unfortunate part for the TV show of Game of Thrones was though, that George R.R. Martin parted ways with the creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss along the way and the quality of the show dropped slowly but surely. I remember thinking in the first couple of seasons that some things didn't really make sense to the show, but they still kind of did. Like some deaths of some characters or how people acted. But after Martin left, some things happend, which still didn't make sense and there was no but. They just didn't make sense and were never adressed again. Also storytelling went to a bad place and as the episodes of the last season aired, many others and I were just disapointed. Even though my expactions were already pretty low, after seing the previous season.

Lets jump to reasons, why the One Piece Anime is better than the TV show Game of Thrones. First of all, let us not forget that One Piece has over 900 episodes (still ongoing), had way more time to portray characters, story etc. and Game of Thrones were only 8 seasons. But let us also not forget, that the creators of Game of Thrones had all the money in the world to create another season or at least shoot some more episodes for the last season than they actually did. Especially the last season, everything was rushed and there was barely any explanation on why things happend, in the way they actually did happen. Also as I stated before, most things stopped making sense at all. They just took George R.R. Martins gold and made it to wood.

To be fair though, the expectations for GoTs last season were higher than any other TV show ever before. So the chances of people being disappointed, especially because the show was going to end, was unavoidable. But they still topped it. It wasn't just like 'okay it wasn't what I expected', but more like 'this is just bad'. I could write books about it, but lets focus on One Piece.

The Anime of One Piece also has its cons, especially in the animation quality. In some episodes the animations don't look finished or are badly made. Also the pacing sometimes is bad and there are a lot of fillers, but that is just the case, because the Manga isn't released weekly anymore, but the Anime is. And they have to consider that the Manga story is further advanced in the story than the Anime. But other than that, the Anime is amazing. Fights are usually well made, the story is insane, characters are sometimes even more lively than in the Manga and the voice acting in One Piece is off the chart.
