Repo the Genetic Opera...A Movie Review

Updated on August 14, 2013

Repo the Genetic Opera is a movie experience that stays with you long after watching the last vivid scene play out in all its beautiful glory.

Set in a dark future where the population of the world was almost wiped out by an epidemic that caused wide spread organ failure, many where happy to turn to a bio tech company that was offering clean fresh organs for a price, providing credit for all.

Gene Co saved the world, but as time moved on and people didn’t pay their debts a new kind of repo man was needed, to claim back what belongs to the corporation that once saved the world.

in a dark world of hookers, drug addicts and murderers a young innocent searches for the truth and a cure to her own blood disease but what she uncovers is more than she could have ever imagined, in this twisted coming of age story.

Rotti largo the C.E.O of Gene co starts the movie with bad news, even with all the medical power at his disposal there is nothing he can do to stop his inevitable demise. Disgusted with the way his children have turned out, he instead focus his attention on the daughter of an employee. Setting up an elaborate test to prove her worth while at the same time claiming his final revenge on an old enemy.

This movie is an underrated masterpiece that I was not expecting to find but I am so glad that I did, the performances in this genetic opera are fantastic at times even breathtaking in their dark beauty, but with names such as

Paul Sorvino

(Good fellas - Romeo and Juliet )

Anthony Head

Paris Hilton as the ambitious Amber Sweet
Paris Hilton as the ambitious Amber Sweet

Alexa Vega

(Spy kids)

Sarah Brightman

(Phantom of the opera)

Bill Moseley

(Texas chainsaw massacre- house of a thousand corpses - The Devils rejects)

Paris Hilton

(Simple life- House of wax)

Terrence Zdunich

(writer, plays the graverobber)

Nivek Ogre

(werewolf in paris, Singer)

I am glad to say I was not disappointed. Right from the start the cast put their all into the somewhat gritty and occasionally gruesome roles of their characters.

From the evil of C.E.O Rotti Largo (played by Paul Sarvino) to Sarah brightman’s breath taking portrayal of blind Mag the cast seems perfect for their roles. Yes even Paris Hilton seems to find her niche in this film.

Is it a horror movie

At first glance Repo the Genetic Opera is a horror movie, full of violence and dark themes. Yet as the story unfolds and the history of the key players is revealed, the movie morphs into so much more.

This is a confronting opera depicting violence and greed in an unabashed often brutal way that seems to highlight the very real human story of heartbreak betrayal and vengeance that keeps the whole saga moving forward at a steady pace.

Originally written as a fairly successful stage play. It told the story of the The Necromerchant's Debt, a grave robber in debt to the organ repo man. With some rewriting of characters songs and places the original story was morphed into what is now Repo The Genetic Opera , financed by lion gate with a budget of over 8 million it is a visually stunning dark movie of greed and betrayal.

Unfortunately it was never given much advertising and fell quickly into the shadows, its success slow but growing over time, turning this unquie story into a instant cult hit. And so it should!

With the longest musical score and the most songs ever to be sung in a single movie, Reop can be a challenge for those unfamiliar with the differences between operas and musicals. (operas use music and song as their main storytelling tool where a musical uses diagloue and song to convey its message)

There is virtually no speech in this movie as nearly every line is sung by these talented dedicated actors, which of course can be off putting to those of us not used to such a storytelling tool.

Repo the genetic opera is well worth the 97 minutes it takes to watch, Its story line is strong and there is never a dull moment in this dark movie which keeps moving you forward to the grand bloody conclusion at the end.

Repo the Genetic Opera became an instant favourite of mine and I couldn’t tell you how many times I have replayed this dark yet beautiful movie. I have to admit I struggle to find fault with this movie, but I do admit that not everyone will enjoy the riveting story that is Repo. It is indeed a movie you will love or hate. But I personally love it and give it a resounding 10 out of 10!

Surprising the reviews for this film where remarkably harsh, a lot of it focusing on Paris Hiltons performance, which is a shame because with more movies up her sleeve like this and I would be a solid fan...

The Rolling Stones

"Misery is enduring this Rocky Horror Paris Show"

USA today was duly unimpressed

"Repo! might have been an SNL or MADtv skit, but as a movie, it should be repossessed by its financiers."

yet not all critics have negative things to say

Brutal as Hell says

"It’s the most inventive horror film in ages, and sure to be a cult classic. “Everybody, everybody, make your genetics your bitch!”

Alternate film guide

"Repo! is for today what Rocky Horror was for the ’70s. "

Try this movie for yourself, it is a journey of vengeance , horror, love and betrayal and truly this Rock Opera shouldn’t be missed... it is art in its purest form!

I have a love of horror movies that cannot be denied, it is my preferred genre of movie. that being said I do understand why others dont share my love. If you get the chance this is a movie that should be watched, much like the rocky horror show, you will either love it or hate it but you shouldn't miss it :)

I hope you check it out,

I have actually grown allergic to horror movies. Can't cope with blood and violence any more. But this plot of the Repo has certainly ignited my curiosity.

      Thanks, nighthag :)

      Hey always exploring

I have to admit the trailer doesn't do this movie justice, but it was the only one I could find that didnt give Way the storyline completely

If you liked Sweeney Todd then you "may" like this, the violence factor is only up a little more and the bloody scenes are handled in a way to move the story forward and not gore for gore sake

Being such a fan of the movie I will always encourage you to try it, sarah brightman is simply divine in this movie

Thanks for reading and taking the time to watch the trailer, it's always a pleasure to have you visit :)

I do really love this movie even with all the singing, ( songs will get stuck in my head for days)

I actually enjoyed this more than Sweeney Todd, I felt the story was much more original and the pace of the movie never slowed :)

Paris was very good in this as someone who used to hate on her I can say clearly I was impressed and hope to see her trying some new stuff soon :)

Thanks for taking the time to let me know what you thought :)

I felt the same way when I did finally come across this movie! Why didn't I know it already existed:)

I truly hope you enjoy it as much as I do :)

Good review. I have watched the movie awhile back and yes it is hard to really get into it with all the singing and same with Todd Sweeny with Johnny Depp, I just felt a lot of it was forced singing idk a better way to describe it but that is the movie style and it is very good art wise and talent wise and i think Paris did a great job. People always are hating on her.

I can't believe I've never heard of this, especially because it's a combo of my two favorite things, opera & horror! Thanks for this hub.
