Review of the Album Enthrone Darkness Triumphant by Norwegian Symphonic Black Metal Band Dimmu Borgir
Why is Enthrone Darkness Triumphant a Memorable Album?
Dimmu Borgir is one of the most famous band names in the history of Norwegian black metal and it is their 1997 studio album called Enthrone Darkness Triumphant that may be their best album. Or is it? It may be one of their most famous works. Regardless of this, the album stands out as one of the best symphonic black metal releases of all time. Mourning Palace starts with a gorgeous symphonic sound as the stage is set for a VERY melodic album! You hear the almost dark chant of “hear the cries from the mourning palace.” The song just continues at a decent pace before the black metal riffing comes in.
A Couple Points to Consider Before Reading About Dimmu Borgir
Before we go any further, let us say that this will not be a biography of the band or the origin of the band’s name but it will be an article about an album that even in 2020 has stood the test of time. Also, the album may not be suitable for those that cannot deal with the very dark lyrics. Note: I tried to listen to this album on the night of October 13th, 2018 and it was tough to do so this album isn’t for everyone. But the creativity in the musical aspect is high.
Why is Dimmu Borgir an Overwhelming Band Musically?
"Spell bound" starts with some medieval chat kind of noise and the keyboards kick in. The song has orchestration that Johann Sebastian Bach would have been proud of. The drumming is quick enough to resemble Impaled Nazarene sound. It is March 2018 and this writer cannot even know how he handles this kind of brutal black metal. It is not the heaviness of Dimmu Borgir that can be overwhelming but it is the lyrical content describing the effects of evil forces. If you listen to the music itself, you can figure out the messages in the songs. But since I have done my physical activity for the day and can write about the greatness of Dimmu Borgir, I can handle this.
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant the Rest of the Album
The vocalist for this album is Shagrath (also known by his real name of Stian Tomt Thoresen). All the band members use stage names. The album can be thought of some sort of journey through dark places but in this case, instead of being embraced by the power of the light, the band chooses to focus on the fact that spirits are possessed by the power of evil. Satan has been used as a character in video games and he is the one that tempted Adam and Eve to eat that forbidden fruit. As history has shown, those people that embrace things such as witchcraft or if they follow the teachings of evil spirits, their downfall shall commence. If you can listen to no other song on this album, make sure to check out the song called Entrance.
The finest song on this album may be the song called "Entrance." If you have made it this far in your listening experience of this album, you can congratulate yourself because I will use a term here that goes like this: it is not for the faint of heart, referring to this album. This is not to say that the album will be a painful listening experience but some people may be overwhelmed by the dark nature of the music and lyrics but there is plenty of melody for guitar players to enjoy. "Entrance" is a song that has that dark kind of guitar play as the keyboards complement the song nicely and there is a riff section that sounds chunky as it goes along but it is still good.
About the Song Entrance
The song Entrance is about a soul that travels on a very long journey to a foreign place yet at the same time it is known where this spirit is going to. The song briefly softens down before the vocals come in again.

Enthrone Darkness Triumphant Final Thoughts
Enthrone Darkness Triumphant can symbolize on a musical level that Dimmu Borgir has gotten to the top of musical excellence. They have triumphed by creating a terrific symphonic black metal album even if the lyrics are not the most positive to take in. What are the best songs? In this album, it is pretty much most of them but the songs "Prudence’s Fall" and "A Succubus in Rapture" are the weakest songs and even those are good as well. As good as Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is as an album it still does not get a 100 points. The reason for that is because of the lyrical content. The first song Mourning Palace has a sort of orchestration that is too brilliant to describe in words here. This excellence follows into the next two songs Spellbound (By the Devil) and In Death’s Embrace. The orchestration in the second song is superb! As of 2020, the best songs in Enthrone Darkness Triumphant are the first three songs and Entrance.
