About the Band Condition Critical and Their Second Album Extermination Plan

Extermination Plan is the second studio album by New Jersey thrash metal band Condition Critical. At first glance some of you may think that the album's title alone is cheesy and it may be that way. The style is fast, hard, and heavy thrash metal that lyrically resembles Cannibal Corpse.

A Few Good Things About the Band Condition Critical

These guys from New Jersey show that at least they have some harmony and melody in their songs which is a plus if American thrash metal bands want to compete with those from Europe.

“Voluntary Disfigurement” is a song that gives listeners an idea of the gory kind of lyrics that are present in this album and that may be enough to scare some of you away. The solo and harmonies in this song make it one of the best in this band's career.

A Brief Review of the Album Extermination Plan

The album starts off with the song called Interminable Surgery and while the riffing is respectable, the lyrics are too much like Cannibal Corpse and that's not a good thing because this one factor alone could drive some metal fans away. Then, there is the late 1980's Slayer feel in this song as the lead guitar speeds up and then the riffs shift to a more melodic part. The album is fast to a degree that it is relentless! These guys took a page out of Slayer's textbook while adding a more melodic, modern feel to the music. The album is so relentless in its approach that it may give you the chills as you listen to this. I think we have to add the band Condition Critical to the list of decent modern American metal bands along with Eugenic Death and Bray Road. Is American heavy metal getting more melodic or are these bands just starting to learn and experiment? It is tough to say but it can be argued that American metal has gotten more extreme in its guitar sound and musical approach in the early 2000's to the present time. The title track Extermination Plan has a bass guitar part that resembles the song called Souls of Black by Testament. “Ostracized” is a song that lyrically describes a situation in which a person is taken to an unknown place and then tortured as he suffers from depression. “Vindictive Hostility” has an impressive bass guitar part that the band Cannibal Corpse would be proud of because that part really fits into the song. These guys are really proficient at what they provide on this album which is high intensity thrash metal with some melodic parts but the lyrical content is the one con that prevents this album from being in the excellent category.

Final Thoughts About the Album Extermination Plan

The musical ideas from Condition Critical are well thought out but the constant reference to the need to be angry about human life is a drawback which means that we will have to deduct some points from the final score. Condition Critical is a thrash metal band that takes thrash to a gory kind of level combining Cannibal Corpse style lyrics and riffing along with a touch of the band Slayer.

Final Score for the album Extermination Plan: 82 points out of 100 for a solid B grade.
