A Little Bit of Info About the Band Critical Defiance, Influences & the Album Misconception
Misconception is the 2019 debut album from a band called Critical Defiance from the country of Chile. Yes, you heard right we are talking about Chile, a country that more than likely isn't known to music fans for heavy metal much less thrash metal and it is time that we discuss this band's music. I get the feeling that these guys are fast thrash metal with influences ranging from Judas Priest, Slayer, Kreator, and others.
There Is More Than Just Thrash Metal On This Album
However, what we hear on this album is far more than just thrash metal with harsh vocals but we have Iron Maiden influenced melodies along with acoustic parts to go along with it.
About the Title Misconception & the Vocal Style
The album's title Misconception means misunderstanding or an idea that is not interpreted the right way. For instance it would be a misconception to assume that thrash metal only exists in a certain few countries in the world. The thrash metal genre has seen a massive growth since its early days in the early 1980s when there was that raw sound in the US scene. The vocals are so harsh that they sound like hardcore Finnish band Scalping Screen.
Misconception Album Review & Analysis Part 1
Brazil has been getting lots of exposure when it comes to the metal genre but perhaps Chile can start growing in that aspect as well. “Punished Existence” sounds like Buried Dreams that melodic death metal band from Mexico that was really good. “Desert Ways” starts off this album and it is melodic from the outset, combining heavy guitars along with it. With all the attention that Spain gets for its heavy metal, I really would like to see other Spanish speaking nations get better in the thrash metal department so that at least there can be some competition. There is a tapping part in this first song that has Sepultura beat! The first song talks about what happens when there is a world with so much sin. It feels like people are really struggling and they have one foot in the grave.
Misconception Album Review & Analysis Part 2
Yes, that's a bold statement but Chile's Critical Defiance in spite of being a young band know how to play effective, melodic thrash metal! Spiral of Hatred has that hardcore feel to it similar to the band Municipal Waste. But the anger in the song is totally there as the song lyrically describes a world where there is much emptiness, sadness, and despair. Chile is a country that has entered the thrash metal realm and we shall see if this is a country that is able to develop a thrash metal scene or not. There is definitely potential for this band from Valparaiso, Chile. Speaking of the word potential, the band takes an interesting approach at the beginning of the song called 507 as it starts out with this progressive acoustic part before the song gets heavy. “What About You” begins with some drumming as the influence in the start of this song resembles early to mid 1990s Florida death metal and I can hear the influence in the guitar work due to having listened to so many different types of metal music over the years. “Onset” is a heavy song about the suffering that the world is going through. Overall, Misconception is a very solid new thrash metal album that is a terrific start for Chile's Critical Defiance!
