Review of the Album Social Intolerance by Belgian Thrash Metal Band Objector
About Objector & the Beginning of Their Album Social Intolerance
Objector is a thrash metal band from the tiny European country of Belgium and what we hear on their debut album Social Intolerance is a good modern form of thrash metal with aggressive vocals. After a short, spoken intro, we are treated to the first full song on this album called Life Denied. The song is about what happens to a person's body when it becomes ravaged by a serious illness. Pain and suffering is what happens when a person gets infected with a serious virus as death means that the end has pretty much occurred. The song most likely is just a funny attempt by the band to try and describe what it feels like to live without pain. Sickness does not wait to start infecting the body and in this section of the song the riff is pretty darn awesome!
A Brief Comment About the Album's Title Social Intolerance
The album's title is descriptive of a scenario where a good social atmosphere is not tolerated. The album's title could also describe certain situations where certain groups of people feel like they are being excluded.
"My Mind Insane" Song Review
“My Mind Insane” is a song that lyrically is about a man that is possessed by the anger and rage that he feels as his mind fails to function at the level of a normal person. The solo work in this song definitely sounds like it was influenced by Slayer as the vocals are of the fast variety.
Objector's musical style resembles a more modern form of American band Slayer
However, this album is very very short being just over 28 minutes long so it will be over soon. Is it as good as Slayer's Reign in Blood? It would be very hard for many metal bands to try and top that speed metal classic. However, one thing that I can say is that the vocals are fast enough to be in the similar style of Tom Araya. There are no super high screams though.
"Not of This World" Song Review
Not of This World is a song about waking up to total darkness and being on the hunt for people to track down, similar to a creature that is looking for its next kind of prey. Alarm is a song that lyrically is very similar to the German band Kreator, describing a scenario where there is smoke rising up in the air as chaos, disorder, disease, and pain is rampant as people are running for their lives. There is a laugh in the middle of this song followed by a shout of “yeah” as the riffing continues.
"Social Intolerance" Song
This Album Cannot Match an Earlier Thrash Metal Classic Though
Listening to this album a third time through, the realization is there that this album does not match up to that 1986 thrash metal classic Reign of Blood. Even if it is lyrically similar, this album cannot match Reign in Blood but it remains to be seen what Belgium's Objector can do in the coming years. The great mid-tempo section of the title track is a sign that these guys clearly have the potential to make it big in a genre filled with so many great bands particularly those from Europe.
Final Thoughts About the Album Social Intolerance
“Toxic Storm” is yet another fast song in an album filled with speed as lyrically it describes a scenario where we must run and hide because acid rain threatens the very life of the planet. The strongest songs in this album are Life Denied, My Mind Insane, Social Intolerance, and Toxic Storm.
