With This Album Glory of Chaos There Is a Style Change For Helstar

Texas metal band Helstar is one of those bands that has always caught my attention and they should catch the attention of heavy metal fans over the world. Their 2010 album called "Glory of Chaos" represents a major change of style for the band. They have switched (we can surmise this) to thrash metal.

The Riffs In the Album Glory of Chaos Are Very Good

There is a heavy riff in the middle of the song "Angels Fall to Hell" that even German band Holy Moses would be proud of! James Rivera’s vocals for this album have higher pitched shrieks and he does not sound like he did on 1989’s Nosferatu album. Lyrically, the band has shifted just a bit and the lyrics are similar to German thrash metal band Kreator (which has also been in the music business for many years). The song called Pandemonium is a song about the fact that the news media usually reports news about famine, war, and chaos. The news only really reports stories that they think will be newsworthy and capture the public’s attention.

Anger: The Song That Caused Me To Listen To This Album

However, the song that really caught my attention early on when I was first listening to this album is the very good song called "Anger." The song is about being so angry when we see a person that we dislike so much that we would want to do anything we could to get rid of this person. Some people are so bad that they connive and manipulate others. Sometimes when you dislike someone so much, it is disgusting to even look at them. However, if we hold on to anger too much, it will poison us and make us feel sick so if you are too angry to function, please do not listen to this song. It is one of the best songs in the career of Helstar.

This Was the Last Album Review of a US Based Band at the Time And Here Is the Reason

This album may be the last album to feature a US based band that I will review for a while. The reason? When your musical tastes expand so much, you begin to see from a fan’s perspective that many other countries around the world have dedicated time to the art of music and it shows in the results. The US had its strong period in heavy metal but it has declined and we are not talking about the older bands that have been around a while. Those bands like Testament, Metallica and System of a Down are still doing a fine job musically. I just never really got into the newer bands as much and as a fan, sometimes your musical interests go far enough to go past the country that you live in. Note: it is now July 2018 and I have since written reviews about other US based heavy metal bands so this trend may continue.

How Is the Rest of the Album Glory of Chaos?

Bonecrusher has an awesome chorus and Rivera does a fine job singing it. I would say that he is an improved version of Randy Rampage in this album. The song Trinity of Heresy has a riff that has that fast picking and the guitar tone of a Kreator song. Once again, James Rivera has a pretty good sinister voice that really matches this band’s music. The song then switches to a nice acoustic part that bands such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity used during the decade of the 1990’s and we are talking about the riff style and structure. Alma Negra is a very fast song with a Slayer influence and you can even hear it in the lead guitar playing. Rivera switches to intense, gritty screams for this song. Zero One is a short instrumental that sounds like something from the early In Flames era. There are two cover songs on this album and the first one is called Heavy Metal Thunder. The second cover song in this album is the song called Animal Magnetism by the German band Scorpions. The song is a slow groovy song about someone that sees a person that really excites him enough that he wants to be in love with her. Overall, Glory of Chaos is one of the best albums released by a US based heavy metal band and Helstar makes itself the elite metal band from the state of Texas! Note: it is now May 2020 and there are still good American metal bands left. If you enjoy the music of Helstar in the decade of the 2010's, check out albums by the band Mastodon as well.
