I think, that without any meaning of exaggeration, I have watched over 200 anime throughout the years. Hearing that for the first time, people get scared at exactly how much time I've spent watching anime. In reality, it wasn't even an eternity or anything like that. Most anime were 13 to 25 episodes long, with only a few rare exceptions that passed the 200 episode line. But with all these I have watched as I've grown, I have to say my favorite ones have always been the romantic ones.

They weren't romantic all the way, sometimes developing some serious action sequences or talking about deep, mind puzzling topics. But for the most part these anime were loving and charismatic, showing characters that just wanted some love and would go as far as they had to as long as their other half was happy. Here are some of the most romantic anime I have watched, not ranked in any specific order.

Angel Beats

Every time I heard the opening to this anime I knew it was going to be a great episode. Short and sour sweet, this anime had a lovable cast of idiots that I could not get enough of. Based on the rather somber idea that these kids are sharing their days together in a make belief school because they didn't get to live out their youth when they were alive, this anime is touching and made me man cry quite a couple of times. The romance between Angel and Otonashi and its touching end left me in much shock at the end but I simply adored this anime and would watch it again with anyone who wanted to see it for the first time.

Lovely Complex

Created by the ingenious mind of Aya Nakahara, Lovely Complex has a romance that we don't get to see often. Risa and Otani, the main characters of this loving comedy, are one of the funniest and oddest couples I have ever gotten the pleasure of getting to know and see them grow. Risa being much taller than normal girls and Otani being shorter than normal guys, this story had me in a rollercoaster of emotions with every unexpected twist and turn. It was an anime I enjoyed till the last second.

Sword Art Online:

More of an adventure and action anime most would argue that the romance in SAO is small and almost not seen. I think that the relationship between main characters Asuna and Kirito is admirable and one that was very entertaining to watch. The way Kirito always fights for Asuna but how she really isn't any pushover either is a great combo and I loved seeing such a strong couple endure the hardships of a VRMMORPG together. It did give into the rather rare romance that could happen between gamers while in one of these games and made me want to be stuck in the game with them to tell them how cute they were. They were amazing and I hope I see more of them in the future, and maybe even some potential dates for the other female characters that also fell for Kirito.

Clannad and Clannad After Story:

Following the high school romance between Tomoya-kun and Nagisa-chan, tears fell heavily with each new episode of this anime. Showing some of the hardships some people have had to go through but have never been spoken about, this story made me root for the characters and want to help in any way possible. I would watch this over and over again, laughing and crying with this great group of students that grew and went their own paths, always remembering the fun they had with their friends and becoming better people because of it.

A few months have passed since Tomoya declared his love to Nagisa. Now their relationship is entering a new phase, and neither is quite sure where it will take them. As their friends move on to lives of their own, Tomoya and Nagisa get ready to start a family of their own. But Nagisa's health has always been precarious, and an event that should bring nothing but joy delivers tragedy instead. Now Tomoya must learn to accept the bitter with the sweet and to understand that the most important thing is to hold onto love, no matter what. Don't miss the heartbreak and triumph of the masterful conclusion to one of the most beloved anime series ever in CLANNAD AFTER STORY!

Another sad entry in the list, but bear with me. The main character Menma is already dead, and is only trying to find peace in knowing her friends and love interest are going to be ok. The friendship growing amongst the friends throughout the show and how self-less Menma could be made me just want to hug them all and tell them it was all going to be ok. It was heartwarming and an anime that taught me many different lessons I still carry with me today.

Anohana Opening Song

Myself Yourself:

A past he can't remember and a mistake he has to correct, main character Sana Hidaka has a big trip ahead of him. Reuniting with old friends and making new ones in the process, this story was a cute, romance fix I needed and found irresistible not to watch episode after episode. The plot twists, the conclusion, it was all very strong and well put and I definitely think it is a must-watch anime.

Before his family left the town of Sakuranomori, Sana Hidaka said farewell to his five best friends, thinking that he would never see them again. Five years later, however, he finds himself returning to Sakuranomori to finish high school while living alone in an apartment owned by his parents. Can the threads of friendship severed by time be mended? Will his friends even recognize him? Or have the changes in their lives as they've grown from children to teenagers made them into different people, pushing them even further apart? For Sana and his best bud Syusuke, it will be strange enough. But with Nanaka, Aoi and Syusuke's twin Syuri all being girls, things are going to get even more complex.

A more action packed anime, this story follows Inuyasha, a half-demon and a half-human, and Kagome, a human teenage girl, who are in a constant quest looking for the fragments of a jewel before it is used for evil. It was a very long anime, and the love triangle formed halfway through left me quite stunned but it was worth watching the characters grow and find solace in each other.

Inuyasha - Kiss Me

Mirai Nikki:

Taking a rather dark look on romance and teen relationships, I'm not sure what to think of the ending of this anime. All I know for sure is that this anime didn't keep anything under covers, always letting it be known if something was wrong and how far a person will go for love. Gasai Yuno will always hold a place in my heart and send shivers down my spine as well.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Before I watched this anime I thought the screams in Dragon Ball Z were bountiful. Giant robot fights, transformations, loss and love, this anime had it all. There were no fake conclusions, just some real action and real consequences. It was great, energetic, funny, sad and realistic in a sense and it has become one of my very favorites.

Welcome to the N.H.K.

A gritty realistic romance between hikikomori Tatsuhiro Satou and his destined savior Misaki Nakahara, this anime showed the dangers of isolation and worthlessness. People aren't perfect and they know that clearly. There will always be a struggle for improvement and a search for love and attention in life and it was displayed perfectly in this anime. I finally understood what it was like to feel all alone and useless only to realize none of it was true because of this anime. It holds lessons and stories that I won't forget for years to come.

Anime always hold fascinating and enriching stories with complex characters that many follow and fall in love with. These stories just reflected the importance of the relationships we have and how much we can change because of them. They made us feel butterflies alongside the protagonists and we desperately wanted these stories to continue on. The honesty, the falling and getting back up and striving forwards for a better connection with your soul mate, that's what defines these excellent anime.

I totally agree Mariana! Yukki was not the biggest man or really brave either, but at least he grew with time and eventually took risks. I would have included Candy Candy in this list since I absolutely loved it but it is considered a western anime and I tried to stick more to Japanese origined ones. I have not seen Kobato or Winter Sonata but I can assure you they have my interest now! Card Captor Sakura and Saikano were amazing too but I find that Sakura is oriented more towards young audiences and Saikano towards much older ones. Yes, Welcome to the N.H.K. and Mira Nikki are probably in the same range as Saikano but they explore sexual desires less, which is why they were in my list instead of it.

I love your list Milady, however, I don't like Mirai Nikki because I can't stand Yukki. On the other hand, I have watched some romantic animes which made me cry a river and I think they are very recommendable, too.

      Candy Candy

      Card Captor Sakura

      Winter Sonata

Among others that I don't remember now. (。・ω・。)
