Sad Songs

Updated on February 2, 2013

Songs are amazing there's no doubt about that but what about the ones that really make you feel something? Have you ever been moved to tears just from listening to a song? Maybe it's a song that reminds you of something or someone, or maybe it's the lyrics or the sound of the music. Whatever it is, I think it is amazing for a song to be able to make people feel emotions. I've put together a list of sad songs. Let me know what you think or let me know of any that you think I've left them out.

Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton - A song written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the loss of Eric's four year old son Conor, who fell from a window of a 53rd floor apartment.

Everybody Hurts by R.E.M - A well known song that never fails to make me feel sad.

Last Kiss by Pearl Jam - This song is a fictional song from the view point of a boy on a date with a girl when they have a car crash and she dies. It's a sad song.

Starry Starry Night (Vincent) by Don McLean - Is a song by Don McLean dedicated to the artist Vincent Van Gogh who took his own life. This was a friends funeral song so it means a lot to me. It's a beautiful song.

Willow by JJ72 - Is not a well known song but if you have not heard it I suggest you do. It's a really sad but amazing song.

Candle In The Wind by Elton John - This song was originally a dedication to Marilyn Monroe but was later remade and performed by Elton John in memory of Princess Diana.

The Living Years by Mike And The Mechanics - There are different versions of this song but this is the one I know. It's about having trouble communicating with your father and when it becomes too late.

Angel by Sarah McLachlan - Is about the Smashing Pumpkins keyboard player, Jonathon Melvoin who died from an overdose of heroin.

The Blowers Daughter by Damien Rice - A moving and beautiful song. I think it's the way he sings it that makes it so important.

Here Without You by 3 Doors Down - A song written about missing someone and the lonliness that comes with it. It's a great song.

I like the one about Vincent and I my mother loves the one by Mike and the Mechanics. Candle In The Wind always stuck me with its power and beauty but, to me, Stary Stary Night is the most deeply moving.

      Two of my favourites are:

      1) "Nothing Compares 2U", written by Prince and recorded by Sinead O'Connor. This song reached No.1 around the world and in the video Sinead has real tears running down her cheeks as she sings it.

      2) Ricky Valance's version of "Tell Laura I love Her" released in 1960 and reached No1 in the UK. This is about a boy called Tommy who is killed in a car race whilst trying to win the prize money so that he could buy Laura a wedding ring.

      Nice article Sarah.
