'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse' - Movie Review

Updated on August 13, 2019

'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocolypse'

'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse' is about three high school kids who are apart of the boy scouts, each one with a different personality. There is the average one, the crude jokester, and the fat awkward one. The average kid and the jokester do not want to be scouts anymore, however have stuck with it for their friend because they are the only three apart of the group. During a camping trip in the woods, the town is overcome by the zombie apocalypse. When they go back into town for a super secret senior party, they realize the town is full of the undead. After meeting up with a cocktail waitress who works at the strip club, the group realize they are the last hope to save the town.

I went into this movie with zero expectations. I did not even know this movie existed. However, I saw it on Tubi, and it sounded interesting. After watching the movie, I read some of the reviews for it and they are harsh. Maybe it is an unpopular opinion, but I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a type of movie that you just have fun with. Maybe everyone just took it too seriously, but I thought it was pretty good!

To kick off the pros of the movie- I enjoyed the three main characters. There is not a whole lot of story to this movie, however, between the three scouts there is some heart. The fat awkward kid's dad has passed away and the two other scouts feel for him and we see their relationship and how scouts has helped them become friends. This was okay for me. I enjoyed this story as I understand how you can latch on to certain things in your life when you are going through hard times. So, it added a little heart to their relationship.

I loved that the effects in this movie were practical. I hate to watch movies like this that are full of CGI. This movie seemed to do everything with practical effects. By this I mean, when animals are apart of the undead, or when blood is thrown everywhere, it all seemed to be done without CGI.

I also really liked the character of the cocktail waitress. I thought she was a complete bad ass and held her own against the zombies. She welds a shotgun and just blows zombies heads off like she does this everyday. Her character was really fun.

The ending was the best part. There is not a whole of lot of over the top zombie slaying in this movie, but the last part of this movie makes up for it. The scouts create all sorts of different weaponry to use against the zombies, and it is a crazy good time when they unleash them on the zombies.

The biggest problem I had with this movie is the consistency among the zombies. There is one zombie that is your stereotypical dumb zombie, but there will be another one who can sing-a-long to Brittney Spears. I didn't understand why there are different variations between the zombies. Why could some zombies fight and others couldn't? It just did not make a whole of sense. However, for a movie like this, I don't think it really matters because this movie is supposed to be goofy.

I also thought that some of the jokes were too juvenile. There are a lot of dick and boob jokes in this one. I got some good laughs out of them so all in all, it didn't really bother me. There were some times, however, I could have done without it. It just seemed a little childish.

'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse' - Movie Trailer

Final Thoughts:

In the end, I think 'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse' is a better movie than most people make it out to be. Maybe it will find some popularity in the future. Although there is just a little too much juvenile humor, it is very enjoyable. For a movie that is meant to be goofy and ridiculous, I had a damn good time. If you like movies such as Tucker & Dale vs Evil or Zombieland, you will probably enjoy this movie as well. It's one for you to shut your brain off and enjoy. However, if you are not into dick jokes and over the top crude humor, I would probably skip this one.

This movie was a nice surprise for me though. I would recommend it if you are just wanting a goofy movie to enjoy.

4 stars for 'Scouts Guide to the Zombie Acocalypse'
