SATC Girls: Charlotte York Goldenblatt

Updated on June 18, 2010

She is the ultimate "Rules" girl, who believes in true love above all things. Charlotte has always dreamed of a picture perfect life with a proper man and a beautiful house and lovely children, but it doesn't come as easy as she hoped. She finds her happy ending in the most surprising place.

Charlotte's Career

Charlotte majored in Art and Business at Smith and eventually became in charge of a prestigious art gallery in New York City. She has always loved art, and even posed for her clients a few times. Once, she posed for a painting of her vagina and the second time she posed as a man, both completely out of character for Charlotte, but freeing for her as well.

Her career was always a huge part of her life, but after she finds her "Prince Charming" and gets married, she quickly leaves her life at the gallery so that she can concentrate on community service and getting pregnant. Unfortunately, things don't really work out the way she planned, but when she goes back to try to get another art job, she is constantly told that she has too much experience!

Charlotte never went back to work at a gallery, but she found her ultimate happiness in her career as a mom to Lily and Rose.

Charlotte's Style

Charlotte's style is timeles and elegant. Every perfectly put together outfit is a reflection of her good upbringing and closely held views of the woman that she wants to be. The model Park Avenue woman, Charlotte is always feminine and girlish in her pastel pinks and manicured look. Even her running clothes are well-matched and tailored.

There are few times where the viewer gets to see Charlotte let go and wear something outrageous. Perhaps the most memorable is her birthday visit to Atlantic City where Charlotte surprises everyone by wearing a very revealing hot pink dress that she bought at the hotel gift shop.

Charlotte at her most beautiful, however, is Charlotte in a wedding gown. Her first marriage to Dr. Trey MacDougal was a big affair and her Vera Wang strapless princess gown reflected the social significance of their match. When she married Harry Goldenblatt, however, she was more subdued in a soft lace gown. She was so beautiful in both gowns.

Charlotte's Men

Charlotte is the ultimate optimist when it comes to love, always wanting to believe the best and never letting go of the hope that true love is just around the corner. She endures relationships over the years like a man who adjusts his package in public, a man who falls asleep when they are making love, a man who wants to have anal sex with her, another man who shouts obscenities when he comes, and a man who cheats while they are on a date. Throughout all of these embarrassing and troubling relationships, however, Charlotte is ever hopeful that her next relationship could turn out to be "The One."

Charlotte finally did meet the man of her dreams one day when she was nearly run over by his cab. Dr. Trey MacDougal was everything she had always wanted. He was wealthy, handsome, and well-bred. After moving into his Park Avenue apartment, however, she realized that she was lliving in a nightmare, not a fairytale. Trey couldn't get it up, preferring to masturbate to Juggs magazine. Charlotte, the optimist does all that she can to make it work, but when they can't get pregnant, it is the end of the relationship.

Harry Goldenblatt, Charlotte's bald and pudgy Jewish divorce lawyer confesses his attraction to Charlotte and despite the fact that she doesn't think of him as the type of man she wants to be with, she finds herself strangely attracted to him. To her dismay, she admits that it is the most amazing sex of her life. Just as she starts to fall for him, though, he tells her that he can only marry a Jewish woman, and their relationship seems doomed.

Not one to ever give up, Charlotte converts to Judaism and they are eventually married. Through their deep love for each other, they found the patience to explore all options for having a child, including adoption. At the end of the television series, they find out that they are getting a baby from China. In the movie, Lily is five and cute as a button. Also, to their enormous happiness, Charlotte and Harry get pregnant and have another beautiful daughter that they name Rose.

For Charlotte, her happiness did not come in the package she had dreamed of, but found that her marriage to Harry exceeded all of her hopes and expectations about love.

Charlotte Quotes

Here are just a few of my favorite Charlotte quotes from the TV series.

♥ "I've been dating since I was 15! Where is he??

♥ "He raped my face. I'm never dating again."

♥ "I gave up Christ and you can't turn off the game!."

♥ "How would you like it if I gave you a cardboard cutout of a big flacid penis."

♥ Schooner and Rebecca need each other!"

♥ "My hair hurts."

♥ "I'm afraid if I don't, you'll dump me, and if I do, then I'll be the up-the-butt girl. And I don't want to be the up-the-butt girl because I mean, men don't marry the up-the-butt girl. Who ever heard of Mrs. Up-The-Butt??"

♥ (to Samantha) Is your vagina in the New York City guidebooks? Because it should be! It's the hottest spot in town! It's always open!"

♥ And my #1 favorite quote: "What if we were each other's soul mates? Then men could just be these great sweet guys to have fun with."

Here the the reality for those 4 woman from a male's point of view. Keep in mind that I have seen maybe 5 episodes but I have a grasp about what the show is all about.

Charlotte is the woman most men would like to marry, settle down with, and actually have their kids.

Miranda is a lesbian. If she is not then all her relationships are going to go south quick because she is not "wife" material, not fun, and boring (though she is smart). If she did get married, it would be a marriage of convenience like Bill and Hillary and he would definitely cheat on her.

Samantha is the girl that all all the guys want to have sex with in high school, college, or on the side. She is fun and great to party with but no guy in their right mind would ever want to marry her. She is a fantasy.

Carrie is somewhere in the middle of the other three girls but confused. She wants love and thirty years ago she would have had it. But rules and feminism of the last twenty years makes her single into her 30s. Naturally she is just like Charlotte though less refined and less the "Suzie Homemaker." She is the type of wife you would get and spend a lot of time at restaurants b/c she wouldn't cook and would have to hire a maid b/c she wouldn't clean but she would not try to challenge you too much like Samantha and Miranda and you could take her to a ballgame and she would have fun and drink a beer with you.
