Early Years

Shailene Diann Woodley was born on November 15, 1991 in Simi Valley, California. Shailene's mother, Lori, is a middle school counselor and her father, Lonnie, is a school principal. Woodley has one younger brother whose name is Tanner.

From a young age Shailene liked being in the spotlight. At the age of four Woodley was already modeling and by 1999 she received her first professional role in the movie Replacing Dad. Shailene also had smaller parts and appeared on episode of The District, The O.C, Without a Trace, Everybody Loves Raymond, My Name is Earl, CSI: NY, Close to Home, and Crossing Jordan.

When Woodley was 15 years old she was diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis. In order to keep her spine from curving any further, Woodley had to wear a plastic brace which extended from her hips to her chest for a total of two years. The brace proved to be very successful and stopped any further curving of her spine.

Getting Recognized

In 2008, Shailene landed the role of Amy Juergens on the television series The Secret Life of an American Teenager. Woodley played the part of a pregnant 15 year old girl. The series went onto to explore the effects of becoming pregnant at such an early age on the teenager's life, her family's life, and her friends' lives.

However, an even bigger role was awaiting Shailene. In 2011 she would be cast to star opposite of George Clooney in the movie The Descendants. Woodley played the daughter of Clooney's character. Shailene's depiction of her character in The Descendants gave her a lot of critical praise and she was nominated for Golden Globe Award. Woodley also won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress for her depiction of her character in The Descendants.

After receiving such recognition for her role in The Descendants, Shailene went onto to star in the film adaptation of Tim Tharp's best selling novel The Spectacular Now. Soon Shailene was cast as Mary Jane Watson in the Amazing Spider Man movies starring opposite of Andrew Garfield.

The Roles of a Lifetime

Even though previous years had been highly successful for Woodley, 2013 would prove to be her most successful year yet. Shailene was cast as the character of Tris Prior in the film adaptation of Veronica Roth's best selling novel Divergent. Woodley would star at the lead female character in the movie and it would go on to gross over $274 million dollars. The success of the first movie spawned the creation of two follow up movies which are yet to be released.

However, Divergent would not be her only breakout role that she would be cast in 2013. Shailene also landed the role of Hazel Grace in yet another film adaptation of a highly successful book called The Fault in Our Stars. The Fault in Our Stars would go on to gross over $293 million dollars!
