The Punisher: Dirty Laundry Short Film Review

Let’s be honest of all of the Marvel comic film adaptations, The Punisher films have had the worst luck. The comic has been adapted three times for theatrical releases and all of them were pretty terrible. I’m not sure why that is. I have always wondered why the worst directors and writers somehow get the rights to the Punisher. But in 2012 at a comic convention the best portrayal of the Punisher came to light in the short film Dirty Laundry.

The film is directed by Phil Joanov and has Thomas Jane returning as the Punisher from the 2004 film. It focuses on a ran down city street where, a gang of thugs are terrorizing everyone around. It’s in this neighborhood that Frank Castle (our vigilante, the Punisher) has to stop at the Laundromat to clean some laundry. He sees what is happening outside and tries to ignore it. But it ultimately becomes too much and he goes out there to teach the crooks a lesson.

The good? I believe this film is what the fans really wanted from the last three movies. I have not read the comics, but from what I’ve learned from comic junkies, the Punisher is a brutal and dark revenge story. And the brutal R rated violence is much more exciting than what happened in the movies. It’s a shame this ten minute film is better than the theatrical releases. Beyond ultra-violence, Thomas Jane does good job here. Ron Perlman does a good job as a handicapped store clerk. And to be fair acting is fantastic throughout.

The bad? No much. It’s a well-made film. And it does a good job getting something right, when Hollywood done it wrong.

Overall, it’s a well-made film. I’m will give it four stars on the basis that it is an incredibly well made film. The only thing is I don’t recommend this to everyone. If you’re a Punisher fan you’ll love this. If you like dirty gritty revenge stories, you’ll probably like it. If you’re a fan of happy endings, epic fantasies, and Disney movies, look elsewhere. This is not for you.

Overall Rating: Punisher Finally Receives a Film That Gets Things Right.
